  • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 28th December 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 55cm Snowfall at base this seas 299cm Posted on Saturday 28th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was really snowing quite heavily for a good part of yesterday, and we have had more overnight. At around 6pm last night, 28cm of snow was cleared from our measuring point. This morning there was a further 27cm. That makes an impressive total of 55cm of fresh snowfall since the last report yesterday morning. And it is still snowing! It doesn't look like we are expecting quite as much over the next 24 hours, but the snow is set to continue into tomorrow. Some forecasts indicate perhaps a break in the snow at times tomorrow, and then a better chance of some clearer skies on Monday. The main issue that ski areas are facing at the moment is not a lack of snow; rather, dealing with all the snow we have received over the last few days. For example, it looks like GALA Yuzawa is starting the day with only 2 runs in the Central Area open, Entertainment and Gigi, but they hope to be able to open up more lifts/courses later. (They are also actually mentioning staffing issues on their official site this morning). Also hearing of some delays opening at Maiko Snow Resort. Other ski areas may well be similarly affected, especially early morning, so definitely check with them before heading out. ----------------------- Ski area information for Saturday 28th December 2024 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 29th December 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 42cm Snowfall at base this seas 341cm Posted on Sunday 29th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. 9:45am update: Mostly cloudy again! ----------- 8:45am update: We have clearer skies and sunshine now! It might not last long, but everywhere is looking really beautiful with all the fresh snow. ----------- Original report: Good morning from Yuzawa. Well, we did actually get quite a lot of snow during the day yesterday. By 5:30pm, there was another 25cm at the measuring point and after clearing that off, there is another 17cm this morning. Total of 42cm. (That is curiously quite different from the 23cm that was recorded at the JMA station. But it's what we have measured, so...) It's always interesting how it seems like once there is a good base of snow in place, incoming snow piles up quickly (quicker?). Imagination, perhaps? But that has been the case the last few days. The snow walls around town have suddenly become much taller and there's just a whole lot of snow around. Excellent news, of course. We most definitely approve! It has to be noted that road traffic was affected yesterday, so some people were caught up in less pleasing circumstances. This morning we started with a lot of cloud and some blue sky too. The blue sky is less now than it was just half an hour ago, and forecasts all seem to predict a mostly cloudy morning with more snow falling a bit later on in the day. Sun and generally clearer skies are forecast for tomorrow along with relatively mild conditions. (Memo to nature: keep cold, please!) Ski area news: Kandatsu Snow Resort is closed today. The reason seems to be some kind of electrical problem. The Chariot pair lift in the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa will be operating today, along with the Joanna courses... and the downhill Falcon course too. (Just the Southern Area and connection with Ishiuchi Maruyama left to open now there). Over at Maiko Snow Resort, the gondola is back up and running, but the Okusoechi quad is still closed. A bit worrying, that - will try to find out what is going on there. ----------------------- Ski area information for Sunday 29th December 2024 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Monday 30th December 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 11cm Snowfall at base this seas 352cm Posted on Monday 30th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. 10am update: As expected, early clouds mostly cleared and it is a beautiful sunny blue sky morning. Ski areas are generally very busy, too! ----------- Original early morning report: An early report this morning. Ski are snow depth data will appear later on. Well, yesterday morning was interesting. For a brief time yesterday morning we got to enjoy a period of largely blue sky and sunshine, but the forecasts were right. The clearer skies didn’t last long as the clouds quickly moved in from the northwest and by late morning it was snowing again. And, again, quite heavily at times with limited visibility. Snow continued through the day and into the night, resulting in another 11cm to add to the report this morning. We start this morning with a mix of cloud and clearer sky, but it looks set to be fine and sunny. It will be milder than we would like, but it’s hard to complain on such a beautiful morning. Early morning conditions should be a whole lot of fun today. Ski areas were generally noticeably busier yesterday in the run up to New Year. We should expect them all to be busy over the next several days in particular. Kandatsu Snow Resort will have been upset at not being able to be open at such a busy time, but is open again from this morning. Unfortunately it looks like the Sunrise Express gondola/6-person lift at Ishiuchi Maruyama will not be operating today. (Reason unclear). But that handy new pair lift they recently installed (Chuo Family Lift) will be in action to keep things running smoothly from the main base area. The status of the top (Okusoechi) Maiko quad lift remains unclear, so we just hope that they get that moving again quickly. ----------------------- Ski area information for Monday 30th December 2024 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 31st December 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this seas 352cm Posted on Tuesday 31st December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was a beautiful morning yesterday, with clear blue skies and sunshine. Stunning views of the mountains on offer. Clouds gradually formed later in the day. After a chilly start, it was a mild day rising up to around +4C in town mid-afternoon. At 8am this morning it is just over 0C and we expect another mild day. There is a chance of rain (in town at least) later on, but that should be turning into snow by later tonight. Let's hope the rain is kept to a minimum. It's a bit annoying, but if we can get to report fresh snow again tomorrow it will feel better! There has been a lot of cloud around early this morning, but at the moment there is quite a lot of blue sky above Yuzawa, and it is bright and sunny at times too. There's more cloud to the north of Yuzawa in the Minamiuonuma valley. Various forecasts all seem to indicate that precipitation will start by mid- to late morning and continue into tomorrow. There is some very good news from Maiko Snow Resort... the Okusoechi quad lift will resume operations this morning. However, the Sunrise Express gondola lift at Ishiuchi Maruyama is still on hold. If you look at the snowfall statistics from this season and previous seasons, links above, you'll see that we have reported an observed snowfall of 352cm this season so far. At the same point of the season last year, that number was just 151cm. So this year we have well over double. Snowfall numbers on their own don't always tell the full story, of course, but in this case we clearly have much more snow around than last year. Let's hope the next few months continue to deliver as well! There will be various events happening around town this evening to bring in the New Year. Stay safe out there, have fun, and see you for the first report of 2025 tomorrow. ----------------------- Ski area information for Tuesday 31st December 2024 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 1st January 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 19cm Snowfall at base this seas 371cm Posted on Wednesday 1st January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. And a Happy New Year to all readers and friends of SnowJapan. Kotoshi mo yoroshiku ne! After the fine start to the day yesterday, we did eventually get some yucky rain in town. But the good news this morning is the 19cm of fresh snowfall to report from Yuzawa and 14cm at our point to the north in Minamiuonuma. Maiko Snow Resort, the only ski area that is regularly talking about it, is reporting 20-30cm of fresh snowfall this morning. (It continues to be a real head-scratcher to us why more ski areas don't talk about fresh snow numbers; at the same time admitting that we are very geeky on that stuff!) It is snowing at varying rates this morning but might clear up somewhat by this afternoon. Some local forecasts give us a good chance of getting some clearer skies. The next few days looks like it might be an unpredictable mix of cloud, light snow at times and perhaps some clearer skies too. (Biggest New Year hope: just stay cold please, and no rain!) Looks like wind and weather in general might be affecting a few lifts at Kagura early this morning, with the pair lift taking over from the quad on the main Kagura run. Today is the day when the Kagura Number 5 lift and BC gate are scheduled to be opening for the season at Kagura, but as of 8:30am we cannot find confirmed information on the status on that. Presumably, if the top quad isn't running... Happy to report that the Sunrise Express gondola at Ishiuchi Maruyama is back operating this morning. Hopefully, the lift and course connections between Yuzawa Kogen, GALA Yuzawa and Ishiuchi Maruyama will be opening as scheduled on Friday. ----------------------- Ski area information for Wednesday 1st January 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Thursday 2nd January 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this seas 375cm Posted on Thursday 2nd January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The clouds cleared again yesterday, leaving us with another very fine afternoon in the region with a lot of blue sky and sunshine, and mild too. It is snowing this morning. Once again it's not particularly cold and the snow is on the wet side for the moment, but that is of course better than rain. (We might get lucky and avoid wet today; maybe not. Forecasts differ on that score). It should be snowing at higher elevations, though, so you know where to go to definitely avoid it! Visibility is limited this morning. Weather conditions aside, we can probably expect popular ski areas to be busier today than they were yesterday. The busy period traditionally continues until at least Saturday, with New Year visitors start making their way back over the weekend in time for the start of the work year on Monday. The snowfall number this morning is from post-report yesterday morning plus the small amount that is now sticking this morning. ----------------------- Ski area information for Thursday 2nd January 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 3rd January 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this seas 378cm Posted on Friday 3rd January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was snowing yesterday, but for the most part it was rather half-hearted and a bit on the wet side, so it didn't really amount to much. Visibility was generally quite limited, which probably put some people off. The snow quality improved as you headed higher up away from town. In the end, there is only 3cm to add to the report this morning after a bit more of a dusting overnight. Higher areas presumably received a bit more than that, but I wouldn't expect much. (Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 5cm of fresh). The Yuzawa Snow Link connections open up from today. That includes the lift and course connection between the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa and the top of Ishiuchi Maruyama. The Southern Area of GALA is also opening from today (two courses - Batman and Eliza), but the opening of the Landau Ropeway link between GALA Yuzawa and Yuzawa Kogen has been delayed. The official reason there is snowfall. It is a generally cloudy start to this morning and as of 8am it is just under 0C in town. Some forecasts predict a chance of some sunshine and clearer skies in the middle of the day today. After that exciting snowfall in December, we are now looking forward to the next cold front and heavy snow to top things up with a nice new thick layer and mid-winter conditions. There's no shortage of snow around, of course, but regular fresh layers are always welcome. It looks like the next potentially significant snowfall might be around Tuesday/Wednesday next week. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 5th January 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this seas 384cm Posted on Sunday 5th January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Light snow continued for much of the day yesterday, though again not really amounting to much. It didn't really stick on roads, etc, but we cleared off some dustings a few times with a total of just under 2cm since the morning. Of course, there may well have been more at higher elevations. The light snow eased off during the night. Today starts quite cold, with a mix of cloud and some clearer skies. As of 7am there is a thick bank of cloud above the Minamiuonuma valley, less so above Yuzawa. We are expecting a mostly fine and sunny morning, perhaps clouding over again in the afternoon. Should be some nice snow conditions to enjoy too. ----------------------- Ski area information for Sunday 5th January 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 8th January 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 23cm Snowfall at base this seas 407cm Posted on Wednesday 8th January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Very happy to report a fresh layer of snow this morning. Our measurement as of 8am is 23cm... and counting. Moderate snowfall right now. Very good. Kagura is this morning reporting 'maybe' 30-40cm of fresh snowfall. Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 25cm. Yesterday ended up being a largely fine day (in terms of sun/cloud and brightness), and it was another mild one getting up to around 6C. And we did get some more rain before the snow started overnight. This morning is clearly colder. It is currently just -0.5C in town. We are expecting snow through the day today. There might be a chance of a clearer start to tomorrow, but some potentially heavy snow is shown on forecasts for Thursday/Friday. Big picture: the last few days of warmth and some rain inevitably hurt snow conditions, but we seem to be back on track this morning. There's a nice new fresh layer out there this morning, with more on the way soon. • Yuzawa Now: Thursday 9th January 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this seas 410cm Posted on Thursday 9th January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Just a 'big dusting' really since the report yesterday morning, which is perhaps surprising. It remained fairly cold during the day, certainly more than the previous two days, but we just didn't get much snow out of it. Today it is one of those early mornings where it's not clear what we will get. There is cloud around, but some clearer skies too. Some forecasts say we might get a fine and sunny morning, with others going for a more cloudy morning. One of those, perhaps! Unfortunately, we have to post an early report this morning, and so can't wait to see what develops. (Early report means some of the snow depth data in the list has not been updated). What seems more certain is snow from tonight and through the day tomorrow. We might get some heavy snow, but the really heavy snow may track to the north of us. Obviously, hopefully we will get lots! ----------------------- Ski area information for Thursday 9th January 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 10th January 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 22cm Snowfall at base this seas 432cm Posted on Friday 10th January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday we had a rather nice morning, actually. The skies parted over Yuzawa for a while before gathering around again later on. This morning it is snowing again. It seems to have start sometime around 2am (as I was woken up by the sound of our pump starting up to send water up to the roof on the house to melt the falling snow). As of 8:45am, we measure 22cm of fresh snowfall at our Yuzawa point and 24cm just to the north at our measuring point the Ishiuchi region of Minamiuonuma. Maiko Snow Resort reports 20-30cm. Yuzawa Kogen reports 15cm. The snow is still coming down and generally limited visibility. Feels quite cold too and it is now slightly above -3C in town. Due to the weather conditions only the Mitsumata Area of Kagura is open. Tashiro and the central Kagura section are not going to be opening today. The Dragondola connecting Tashiro with Naeba is also closed, of course. Other than that, all other ski areas in the region appear to be opening as planned. Looking ahead to the upcoming long weekend (Monday is a national holiday), I'm looking at four different forecasts that are predicting different things. The current snow might continue into tomorrow morning, but generally it should be fairly calm with the chance of some sunshine at times. Whatever the weather, but especially if it is fine and sunny, expect ski areas to be busy this weekend. It is traditionally one of the busiest weekends of the ski season. ----------------------- Ski area information for Friday 10th January 2025 The information below is manually checked with official sources and updated for every report.
