Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata
New snowfall at base 3cm
Snowfall at base this seas 378cm
Posted on Friday 3rd January 2025 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here.
It was snowing yesterday, but for the most part it was rather half-hearted and a bit on the wet side, so it didn't really amount to much. Visibility was generally quite limited, which probably put some people off.
The snow quality improved as you headed higher up away from town.
In the end, there is only 3cm to add to the report this morning after a bit more of a dusting overnight. Higher areas presumably received a bit more than that, but I wouldn't expect much. (Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 5cm of fresh).
The Yuzawa Snow Link connections open up from today. That includes the lift and course connection between the Northern Area of GALA Yuzawa and the top of Ishiuchi Maruyama. The Southern Area of GALA is also opening from today (two courses - Batman and Eliza), but the opening of the Landau Ropeway link between GALA Yuzawa and Yuzawa Kogen has been delayed. The official reason there is snowfall.
It is a generally cloudy start to this morning and as of 8am it is just under 0C in town. Some forecasts predict a chance of some sunshine and clearer skies in the middle of the day today.
After that exciting snowfall in December, we are now looking forward to the next cold front and heavy snow to top things up with a nice new thick layer and mid-winter conditions. There's no shortage of snow around, of course, but regular fresh layers are always welcome.
It looks like the next potentially significant snowfall might be around Tuesday/Wednesday next week. Before that, we might get some light snow at times across today and tomorrow with clearer skies more likely on Sunday.
