Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 55cm
Snowfall at base this seas 299cm

Posted on Saturday 28th December 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here.

It was really snowing quite heavily for a good part of yesterday, and we have had more overnight.

At around 6pm last night, 28cm of snow was cleared from our measuring point. This morning there was a further 27cm. That makes an impressive total of 55cm of fresh snowfall since the last report yesterday morning.

And it is still snowing!

It doesn't look like we are expecting quite as much over the next 24 hours, but the snow is set to continue into tomorrow.

Some forecasts indicate perhaps a break in the snow at times tomorrow, and then a better chance of some clearer skies on Monday.

The main issue that ski areas are facing at the moment is not a lack of snow; rather, dealing with all the snow we have received over the last few days.

For example, it looks like GALA Yuzawa is starting the day with only 2 runs in the Central Area open, Entertainment and Gigi, but they hope to be able to open up more lifts/courses later. (They are also actually mentioning staffing issues on their official site this morning).

Also hearing of some delays opening at Maiko Snow Resort.

Other ski areas may well be similarly affected, especially early morning, so definitely check with them before heading out.
