It is currently a chilly +2c at 8am, but the high will only go to around +5c. This is a great sign winter is settling in as we head towards the opening of the resort later in the month. Recently snowfall was 2cm on November 4, and another 1cm this morning. It is currently snowing very lightly. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Now that the season is over it has given me time to reflect and sum up how things panned out in 2016/17. The total snowfall for the season was 636cm measured by me in the Kitanomine village area. This amount includes snowfalls prior to the ski area opening and is broken down by month as follows: November 110cm December 178cm January 126cm February 132cm March 73cm April 17cm Comparing this to last season 2015/16 winter there was a total snowfall of 835cm with the monthly figures as follows: November 77cm December 295cm January 187cm February 178cm March 83cm April 0cm Over the last 5 seasons the historical snowfalls are: 2016/17 636cm 2015/16 835cm 2014/15 390cm 2013/14 591cm 2012/13 751cm Now what this means is that in terms of snowfall 2016/17 was average, while the previous season 2015/16 was exceptional with 2 meters more snowfall. However general numbers alone do not really show the full picture. Notably there were heavy snowfalls in November 2016, and these snowfalls were predominantly wetter heavier snow than what Furano usually gets, even early season. The combination of snow with a heavy moisture content, and a lot of snow, meant that the base bulked up very quickly early season covering up debris and smoothing out the natural dips in the mountain. For me November and December 2016 was the best skiing in those months that I have experienced in 10 years on Furano. Some will describe January and February 2017 as great, while others describe those months as ones they would rather not remember. Looking into this a bit closer, the amount of snow in those months was not spread evenly over the whole month. For example there was a total snowfall in January of 126cm, but 87cm of that total fell between January 23rd-30th over an 8 day period. Moreover, between 1st-9th January 11cm fell and between 13th-22nd January just 2cm of snow was recorded! So indeed if you were on your ski holiday January 1st-9th or 13th-22nd you certainly may have been wondering where all the famous Japanese powder and consistent snow was. Whereas if you were here for a week January 23th-30th you would have been raving about the conditions. For February, the snow was also very unevenly spread over the month. The total monthly snowfall was 132cm with the following dates producing most of that snow: February 1st-5th - 34cm, February 18th-19th - 32cm and February 24th-26th - 40cm. There was a long stretch from February 6th-17th where I only observed 4cm of snowfall. 4cm!!! Certainly in Furano the pattern of snowfall in January and February was not what we would normally expect, but for those that were here for the season there were certainly many epic days. March and April turned out to be very good with cooler temperatures and plenty of overcast days meaning that the snow stayed pretty firm and didn’t go as slushy as it might have. In fact, when I reflect back, for me November and December, and then March and April, are the periods that I remember as providing much better than expected snow conditions. Another point to remember with snowfall stats is that the snow is only one part of the equation. Areas of Honshu this season produced high snowfall numbers but the temperatures often ventured into positive numbers, meaning that the powder was temperature terminated. Whereas in Furano even though there were many stretches in January and February of only slight snowfall, the powder stayed powder for days on end due to consistently sub-zero temperatures during the day. So to sum up the season through my eyes - an average, but not bad season for total snowfall. Excellent snow conditions early and late season November, December, March and April. An unusual snowfall pattern in January and February leading to short periods with very good snowfall - and other periods with very little. In a good season or bad season the consistent cold sub-zero temperatures mean that it is likely you will be skiing powder on Furano even if it hasn’t snowed for a few days. The Kitanomine Gondola will be opening over the summer for sightseeing. It will be operating from Saturday 1st July until Sunday 27th August, from 6am until 8pm. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . That's it folks. Today is the last day of the ski season here in Zao and this is my last report of the 2016/2017 season. Just the Chuo course area remains open this morning and it's a mix of cloud and clearer skies this morning. Looking back, here’s how much snowfall I observed – at base village level – over the last five seasons: 2016-2017 season: 520cm 2015-2016 season: 460cm 2014-2015 season: 703cm 2013-2014 season: 579cm 2012-2013 season: 657cm As you can see, we did better than last season and this time round the resort just about managed to remain open until the end of Golden Week. In terms of the amount of snowfall, I would say that this season was again ‘less than average’ - it was definitely not a bumper season. Still, I enjoyed some excellent days out on the slopes as I hope that people who visited Zao also did well with their timing and had fun. I highly recommend that you read through the archives from previous seasons as well as this season. Here is to a good summer and autumn season – Zao is a fine place to visit year round - followed by a very snowy 2017-2018 winter season. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Morning from Nozawa. There's quite a lot of cloud around but it feels like it is clearing and indeed sun is on the local forecasts. It will be another fairly warm spring day and similar lined up for tomorrow too - slightly warmer still. Lower areas seem to all of a sudden gotten rather dirty looking - always sad to see, but of course inevitable without fresh snow falling. The Karasawa slope area at base is now showing lots of ground. Farmers will be happy and trying their best to clear the snow to get cracking with their spring work. There's still a lot of snow around on the mountain though and absolutely no snow cover issues on the upper slopes. You can still ski or snowboard back down close to the Hikage base area - from where you can get on a shuttle bus back over to the base of the Nagasaka Gondola if you want to get back up top. It doesn't feel windy down here but the resorts are reporting some wind higher up. At the time of writing it looks like a few of the top lifts at Happo-one are on hold at the start of the day due to the wind conditions. If you are planning to head out, probably best to check with the resorts to see if there's any changes. Tomorrow should be fine and sunny and mild. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here A bit more snow falling yesterday during the day and perhaps a cm or two on the mountain - though I don't have any to report from down here at base. Nice weather this morning with the sun out though unfortunately it is still windy. At the time of writing the top lifts at both Niseko Grand Hirafu and Niseko Annupuri are one hold due to wind conditions. Otherwise, they are both open as planned. The forecast for the weekend is showing nice and sunny conditions and rather warm conditions too as temperatures venture well into double digit territory in the day time. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning from Shiga Kogen, where winter-like weather has made a comeback! Yesterday there were some strong winds blowing about and snow falling. All a bit mad. It was very wet snow (I think rain is closer) earlier on in some places, but back to snow and there's a lot of cloud and fog around as we approach lunchtime. And wind too. Not the 'kindest' of weather conditions, for sure. And not the kind of conditions we expect as we approach mid April either. The official Shiga Kogen site is saying 10cm of fresh snowfall this morning from yesterday. I measured 8cm, so that is what is on the report. Things should clear up by tomorrow morning at the latest and we should be warming up a fair bit by the weekend. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. Not very appealing conditions right now, I'm afraid. I'll get straight to it... it's raining. High up, too. We are hoping that it will ease off this morning and there is some sunshine appearing on forecasts too, so fingers crossed. Tomorrow should be sunny with it warming up to nearly 20C. Yikes! Still, it should be a lovely day to get out on the mountain without all that chunky winter gear. Sunday is the last day of the season for a few more lifts - noted below for Happo-one and Tsugaike - and so from Monday we kind of enter 'the last chunk' of the season. It lasts a while though - there's still a full 4 weeks to go! The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Unfortunately, it did rain yesterday evening and I believe through the night but it is not raining just now. So what's up this morning... Fog is the main thing. Not much to see at all this morning with thick fog swirling around (does fog swirl?), but the forecast does actually have some sun coming out this afternoon. The fog (and wind, apparently) is going to stop the top King Number 4 lift from opening at the start of the day today at Niseko Grand Hirafu. Sunday onwards it looks like we can expect lots of sunshine and mild conditions, warming up towards mid-week. --- Individual resort information: Friday 7th April 2017: Below info subject to change during the day due to snow and weather conditions Niseko Grand Hirafu Niseko Grand Hirafu plans to be open daily until Sunday 7th May. All course areas remain open. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Fresh snow! Morning from Hakuba and how about some fresh snowfall to play in this morning? I wasn't hear yesterday so I don't know the full story, though this morning there's up to 5cm of snow in some base areas - Goryu is reporting 5cm, Happo-one is reporting 10cm up at Riesen and I see Hakuba 47 talking about 25cm or so (though that may be wind-blown). Sounds like it was a blustery winter-like day, especially on mountain, and am hearing about the 'yellow sand' being blown over as well. Investigations are required... And it is a nice morning to investigate too with lovely blue skies all round. Fine weather is expected over the next few days along with a real warm up in temperatures. Later in the week rain is expected too though different forecasts disagree on how much. I think it would be fair to say that we are in the middle of spring taking over from winter. Hakuba 47: Hakuba 47 is reporting 25-30cm of fresh snowfall in places. All of Hakuba 47 remains open. Official snow depth: Upper: 300cm Base: 115cm Hakuba 47 plans to be open until Sunday 7th May. Hakuba Goryu: Hakuba Goryu is reporting 5cm of fresh snowfall on upper areas. The Iimori area of the resort is now closed. The Toomi and the upper areas remain open. Official snow depth: Alps: 280cm Toomi: 110cm Hakuba Goryu plans to be open until Sunday 7th May. Hakuba Happo-one: Hakuba Happo-one is reporting 10cm of fresh snowfall (Riesen quad top). Some base course areas are now closed but the resort remains mostly open. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Thought I really needed to get a report up this morning... because... snow! It has been snowing again. And not just a cm or two - just over 10cm outside my place and I am hearing up to 20cm in some places. And right now the sun is out and there is lots of blue sky above. And not busy at all. Perfect! It does look like we can expect things to start warming up properly over the coming days - and also some rain later in the week too. I'll post my next report before the weekend.
