Snow did indeed start falling right after yesterday's report was up; it got colder, too (kinda scary that it was on the edge of rain at one point yesterday afternoon). Just over 40cm of new this morning, and light snow continues to fall. Getting foggy, too (it's staying cold, so it's not because of a rising thermometer). There was a lot of wind last night, with lots of drifting in some areas. Those drifts were super easy and dense, too (I know because of the big drifts outside my house that needed to be dealt with before I could even get to the monster snowthrower). The tummy is disappearing; those biceps are pumped. Snow is just going to keep on coming, it seems, with another heavy dump predicted for Tuesday. More weightlifting ahead.... The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Quite a mild Saturday as temperatures in town nudge 0c. There is low cloud which is protecting us from the sun and preventing melt, but at the same time that cloud is sitting low on the resort. This combined with light snow falling means visibility is pretty poor out there at the moment. There is however a nice new 7cm of light powder sprinkled over the town, and likely double that on the resort. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Some nice blue skies amongst the clouds in the afternoon yesterday, but overnight the snow clouds came back and there's a fresh 13cm on the ground early on. That should translate into 20+cm out on the mountain so it should be a fairly decent reset. It is cloudy now as that earlier snow has eased off and the clouds even look rather thin in places. Still, regular snowfall is lined up on the forecast through into the middle of the coming week. Nice. --- I have used all my cunning and guile to hunt out information about the Niseko Grand Hirafu 'Early Morning' operations. Hurray! And here they are: - Daily from Monday 7th January until Thursday 31st January 2019 - The Ace Number 2 quad lift (Center Four) will operate from 8:00am until 8:20am - The following courses will be available: Super, Furiko, Green, Alpen, Sennoki - 500 yen tickets can be bought from the .Base lift ticket booth Normal lift tickets - including season lift tickets - are not valid, so everyone needs to hand over 500 yen to use this 'premium' service. I have my thoughts on that, especially for a 20 minute service (how many times are people going to ride the lift in 20 minutes?), but it is what it is. Annupuri 1120m: 175cm snow depth. Hirafu peak: -9℃, NW15m/s, 20cm snowdrifts. Coastal data Benkei cape: NNW12m/s, Kamui cape: W11m/s, 1011hPa, 2.0m waves. Kutchan Town: 134cm snow depth. Snowfall started from pre-dawn due to passing low-pressure system. Westerly wind has picked up above 800m elevation, making the cornices and snowdrifts develop up to 30-40cm. The avalanche hazard will rise in south facing slopes above 1000m such as Backbowl’s and Osawa’s steep walls. Potential sliding layer is Jan 4-5th low-pressure system snowfall or Dec 27th depth hoar layer. Many of the avalanche accidents occur in leeward steep slopes, knolls and cornice slopes under stormy weather. Gates’ opening is undetermined. Please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. Niseko is a resort and many people gather here. The Niseko Rules are official Rules for preventing accidents in the out of bounds area. And according to the Niseko mayor, Prime Minister Abe and the director general of the forestry agency have validated it. Every person using the Niseko resort facility has to follow those Rules. The wind has been relatively moderate this season and the snow is building up in different aspects than the average seasons. Avalanches occur as the snowdrifts’ slabs collapses. Less now, though it's varied depending on where abouts in the area you are. I remember saying yesterday that the snow might build up again, but that didn't last long and this morning the resort are reporting 0cm of fresh which seems quite surprising. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here First of all, if you were naughty and didn't read my report from yesterday please let me bring my look back at the season so far to your attention. There's only a little fresh snowfall to report to you this morning, I am just about managing to report 1cm. The forecast is looking good for regular snowfall starting from tonight and into next week, so we should be getting a reset soon. As I made note of in the report yesterday, one of the less excite aspects of being such a hugely popular place is that you really need the regular fresh to fill in quickly tracked-out courses. But don't worry, I will very likely be bringing you some numbers tomorrow. Someone asked about the early Gondola service at Niseko Annupuri, and if there were any plans for any further such operations beyond the planned 12th-14th January... as far as I can tell, that will be the last of the early morning Annupuri for this season. (I'll keep an eye on that -- and if anyone has any differing information, please do tell. I'm always happy to admit a mistake if I make one). From Monday, Niseko Grand Hirafu plans to opening early but I am failing in my trying to find out full details. Perhaps it is a secret. (I'll post info as soon as I know). --- Niseko Avalanche Report Niseko base 6am: -6℃, no snowfall, calm. Moiwa800m: -7.3℃, SW1.2m/s, 5cm snowfall and 30cm snowdrifts in 12hours. Mikaeri junction: -9℃, calm and no snowfall. Annupuri1120m: 170cm snow depth. Peak: -12℃, light breeze and snowfall. Niseko Village Mizuno no sawa: -8.69℃, SW3.4m/s, 240cm snow depth. Kutchan town: -5.5℃, E1.5m/s, 122cm snow depth. Coastal data Benkei cape: NW9m/s, Kamui cape: SW10m/s, 1023hPa, 1.4m waves. Calm morning under a high-pressure system. No new snow has fallen, cornices and snowdrifts development is minimal and yesterday’s tracks remains. Jan 3-4th layer will form and potentially become a trigger layer under future snowfall transition. The mountain is mostly tracked out. Ski carefully and remain in control. Beware of sudden weather changes. Large cracks have formed at 1000m Higashi-One. Those cracks are the result of the slope releasing its tension under the weight of Dec 27-29th heavy snowfall and snowdrift development. Avalanches caused from same storm’s Dec 27th hoar layer are to be expected in 1000m NE aspects. Better not stimulate cornices/knolls and stay away from valley bottoms. There is no guaranteed safety in Winter Mountains. (Not sure why I used that word, seems appropriate so I'll keep it in!) Yes, it ended up snowing for the day yesterday and it's snowing this morning. I hope I am not boring you! The official snow depth at top is now over 3m and we I have measured and recorded well over 4.5m of snowfall for the season so far. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . A very cold morning it is here in the village with the temperature now showing -10c. It will warm up and be around -4c by lunchtime. There hasn't been a great amount of snow since yesterday, around 2cm, but it is snowing now and there will be at least a small amount of accumulation during the morning. The cloud is sitting low at the moment over the resort and visibility is not the greatest. There is no snow on the forecast for tomorrow and it will be sunny in part.
