The latest Niseko Now report can be found here The steady delivery of snowfall has continued and I have (slightly over) 10cm of fresh snowfall to add this morning. That brings my total observed snowfall at base to 155cm for the month so far. (Just as a direct comparison, that number for the whole of December last year was 333cm. We have a lot of catching up to do!) It feels fairly calm early this morning so I expect planned lifts and courses should be open as normal. I think I'll get out there myself to check things out. In the name of research, of course. :) That's all I have for you this morning so... see you tomorrow. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa Mountain Base elevation 300m 6.00am: -4°, 5cm new snow in the last 12 hrs, 600m: 5cm new snow in the last 12hrs. Annupuri 1000m: snowpack 90cm. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:NNW10m/s. Kamui Cape WNW10m/s, 1021hPa, wave 1.6m. The current weak winter type pressure pattern has caused slightly increased snow cover above 1000m and some minor cornice growth. From observation there is no significant snowdrift development and avalanche risk is low. All gates are still closed because bushes are not covered yet. There is still not enough snow for riding off piste, but the groomers are in excellent condition. This information is provided to prevent all winter mountain accidents including avalanches. Avalanches occur when conditions are met, regardless of the amount of snow. Always beware. Watch out for obstacles and stumps hidden in the snow. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It is a nice sunny clear morning here in Furano and there has been 8cm of new snow accumulate on the ground since yesterday. An almost perfect morning! The international ski visitors have arrived in large numbers during this week and the resort is really starting to feel alive as we enter the peak season. Unfortunately there is still not enough snow for the Kitanomine side to open and the Furano Zone will be very crowded this weekend with long lift queues expected. Looking ahead the forecast for the next week has a little light snow but no major falls. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It is white out there, barely. Snow started to fall in the late afternoon, but we really only got a dusting again. And it's a sunny day out there - there was cloud cover early this morning, but after a fast drive to Nagano I think it's actually fog that is now lifting/burning off. As seemed likely, no additional resorts have opened. Interesting that Lotte Arai is reporting no new snow, but that their base has magically grown to 75cm (not that we would complain about more snow on the ground; just wonder about the reporting....). Now, I've been talking about a possible Christmas present, and it could snow a bit Monday. Keep hoping! Do those snow dances! Whatever it takes. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning everyone and welcome to the weekend. I have measured another modest amount of snow this morning, I am measuring 9cm. It's bit by bit at the moment, rather than serious dumps, though nice quality snow for sure and all is welcome. As always we can expect more than that higher up and a friend of mine who gets to be up there early tells me around double what I measure down here. (I'm not in the least bit jealous of him. Honestly). This morning it is cold and light snow has been falling, but it is easing off now and in some directions some breaks in the cloud are appearing. It is the weekend before Christmas. What might be called the first 'peak' of the upcoming peak season is nearly upon us. More and more people are arriving by the day. There are highly expectant folk, and rightly so. After all, they have been promised the best powder in the world... (not by me, of course). And of course, it goes without saying that everyone hopes that every visitor gets to have a fantastic time while they are here in Niseko. So it is good to see some mid-mountain runs re-opening at Hirafu for the weekend. The King Number 1 pair lift is also operating from today. Top lifts are still not available and there are still areas that can't be accessed, so we are by no means there yet. We can also hope for gradually more snowfall building up and for the whole mountain to be open fairly soon. (Please). And who can forget Santa-san's forthcoming appearances! ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: -7℃, 3cm snowfall in 12h. Coastal data: Benkei cape WNW13m/s, Kamui cape SW16m/s, 1021hPa, 1.9m waves. Annupuri 1000m snowpack: 80cm. The wintery pressure distribution resulted in a light snowfall, relatively consistent above 1000m elevation and the snowpack has grown slightly. The wind has blown the new snow from the western side to the eastern side of the mountain, as Hanazono seems to have the most amount of new snow, however a thin layer of light snow can be found throughout the mountain. A new low pressure is advancing through the afternoon and temperature is forecasted to rise during the day. Light is weak again and the terrain is difficult to see, ride carefully. The out of bounds area is still closed. Please obey the ski patrol’s instructions and respect the Niseko Rules. The mountain condition is slowly getting better. 2 anemometers have been installed at two location in Hanazono yesterday, and 4 more locations to follow. After a sunny, mild day (ideal for finishing up the never-completed task of preparing for winter), we are right on the edge of snow at base level this morning. It's raining, but that has turned to snow a couple of times - not very long, or even stayed on the ground, but it's a good sign. Normal, really. It also means that it is likely that we're getting some snow up on the hill, which is impossible to see in the fog (oh, yeah, it's gray out there). But we don't mind the gloom; snow doesn't fall on bluebird days. Akakura Kanko had rescheduled for an opening today, but that's not going to happen. In fact, I don't think any of the areas will be opening tomorrow as announced, so let's just switch to, "open when there's snow" mode. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 12cm Posted on Friday 20th December 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . We are expecting some precipitation today; hopefully some snow. But as we continue to wait for snow, some exciting news... The Nagasaka Gondola at Nozawa Onsen first opened in 1979. The current set up has a mid-station - Yunomine - before continuing up to the top Yamabiko area. That is set to change come late 2020, in time for the 2020-2021 winter season. The resort is building a brand-new gondola that will go straight up from the Nagasaka base to a new top Yamabiko station. There will be no mid-station, just one straight line up to the upper Yamabiko area. The new gondola will have a length of 3129m and each cabin will seat 10 people. The trip up to the top from base will take about 8 minutes. It looks like the gondola cabins are going for a luxurious feel with really comfortable seats and there will a lot of glass windows too (including part of the floor), so there should be really good scenery on the way up. Check out the Nagasaka webcam image below (the 5th photo) and see if you can spot any ‘new’ towers! The resort will also be re-doing the base station too. Excite! The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Here is what the ski resorts are putting out there this morning: - Happo-one are officially reporting 10cm of snowfall on the upper Kurobishi area. They are at the same time reporting 2cm at the top of the Gondola on social media, but officially none at Usagidaira. Don't shout at me, I'm only reporting what I see. - Hakuba Goryu are reporting 1cm on their upper slopes. - Hakuba 47 are reporting no new snowfall, but they are reporting snow falling as of 8am on the mountain. OK, good news in that the top run at Goryu/47 is back open from this morning - the Panorama course and the Hakuba 47 Line E lift and upper R8 are now once again available. 47 are reporting snow falling nicely up there as of 8am this morning which is good to hear. Get the Gondola back to base at both Goryu and 47. Looks like limited visibility up there early on. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have another layer of snow to report to you this morning, almost 10cm. Nice. It is a bit dark this morning with light snow falling early on this morning. Mostly just cloudy conditions forecast for the day today. What we really need, of course, is a great big whopping significant delivery of large amounts of snow for things to really get going. We still aren't there yet but the forecasts are still looking promising. So come on now, bring it to us! Taking a look at the other reports from other regions, it looks like all of Japan is suffering from a relative lack of snow this December. It's not good to hear. And it's hard to think that it can continue for much longer. I believe. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: -6℃, light snowfall. Coastal data: Benkei cape NNW10m/s, Kamui cape WNW8m/s, 1017hPa, 1.2m waves. Moiwa 700m: 40cm snowpack, WNW5m/s, good visibility. Annupuri 1000m: 80cm snowpack. Relatively calm weather under a moderate wintery pressure distribution. Bushes are yet to be covered in the out of bounds area and conditions are not suitable for riding. Getting better in alpine area above 1000m elevation, however far from enough to open the gates. Sasa Bamboo and rocks are still present inbounds too. The light is weak and slopes’ undulations are hard to see. Ride carefully. The annual Niseko Avalanche Meeting will be held at the Niseko Chomin Center at 6pm on Dec 26th. Topics about the Niseko Rules and out of bounds riding, reports on present avalanche safety in Switzerland, Austria and USA will be discussed and compared with Niseko. Keynote speech by Dr. Yamaguchi of National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Resilience. Anyone is welcome to attend. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It looks like the warm weather has passed and we are back into the cold winter. Yesterday there was some light snowfall that amounted to 4cm. Today is cloudy and probably there will be no snow during the day, but Friday should bring in more of the white stuff. The lower slopes of Kitanomine were looking very patchy yesterday morning, a victim of the warm weather. Signage and fencing has been erected for the Kitanomine quad lift and I would take this as a sign that opening is very close.
