The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Snow did fall yesterday, but it really didn't amount to anything, well, what we really need. Just a dusting really, while that breakable crust layer underneath just seems to be be getting thicker. A friend is out to look at the conditions outside the runs, but I think it will be fairly horrible. Lots of sasa (bamboo grass) and not enough snow to keep your tips, edges, arms, etc. from getting tied up. I keep watching the weather patterns, too, and it's really unusual, with none of the steady winds from the northwest that usually bring us plenty of white stuff. There's a persistent front that extends from the Koreas to Noto Peninsula to the west, re-routing the winds in all directions but what we want. I feel as bad as all of you, readers; just trying to make sense of this really unusual season. So far. Let's think that way. Just some light snow overnight after a generally fine day, starting as sleet but turning to snow meaning I can add 2cm to the reports. This morning seems like it should be fine again. Some cloud around. Some blue sky. A lovely sunrise earlier. It is calm and relatively mild. The Summit and Rabbit tree run courses are now open as well as all of the normal courses at the resort. Today is the second day of the long weekend so we can expect it to be busy once again. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning Niseko fans! We enjoyed fine weather yesterday with some lovely blue skies and a wonderful sunset. Light blue and pink. Kawaii!! This morning it is a very different colour scheme. There is lots of grey cloud around and visibility may well be an issue. Very light snow is falling in places (but for now it's not the kind of snow that will ever amount to new cm!) First run operations are happening at Niseko Annupuri until Monday. If you want a 7:20am start on the Niseko Annupuri either tomorrow or Monday and have the 1,500 yen funds... As of 8:30am it looks like the top King Number 4 lift is on hold. Not sure why. Other lifts appear to be opening as planned, so that basically means all lifts apart from the top Jumbo Number 4 lift at Annupuri and the Country Road lift at Niseko Village. ----- Long weekend ahead! Yes, Monday is 'Coming-of-Age' Day here in Japan and a national holiday. ----- If you haven't already, I recommend you check out the Hakuba Now report today. In it, the fearless reporter down there replies to some charming comments sent in to, er, 'thank' them for their ongoing daily efforts. I do know the feeling. Hirafu 1000m: 4.2m/s, 233°(SSW), -9.2℃. Hanazono 720m: 3.5m/s, 179°(S) -4.8℃. Annupuri snow depth 135cm. Sea of Japan Benkei cape: S5m/s, Kamui cape: SSE4m/s, 1012hPa, 0.7m waves. Lacking snowfall and the groomers are firm. The temperature is a little high as a small Low pressure system is approaching. The general avalanche risk is low according to this morning’s observations and weather data evaluations, however hard-slab slides hazard is still present in steep slopes. Gate 3 (Hirafu peak) has opened yesterday. Good news for people hunting the peak. Please be mindful of the Rules. Bushes are still thick and make things difficult for rescue operations. Be very careful out there and remember that outside the gates is outside the resort’s management. We see a lot of people riding the Annupuri O-sawa (first bowl). This is the place where the first fatal snowboarder’s avalanche accident occurred. Accidents can happen anytime when the conditions align. The Niseko community respects the freedom to ride, however is always concerned about all user’s safety. Please respect the Niseko Rules. The light is weak and it's difficult to see the slope condition. Beware of sudden weather changes. The latest Naeba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Naeba. 4cm of fresh snowfall on the ground this morning with light snow falling but some patches of blue sky on display too at times. Light snow is actually forecast for the day, so not sure how it will turn out. Hopefully there'll be a bit more than that up higher. Almost all of the main courses at Naeba are now open - just the top Takenokoyama lift and course and the Womens Riesen Slalom course remain closed. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. Yesterday we enjoyed a bit of clearer skies at times but light snow has started to fall. It seems that it is either just cloudy or light snow falling currently in the various corners of the area. Hopefully it will continue for most of the day though we can't be expecting anything significant. I am a bit confused with the information coming from Kumanoyu - 0cm on their facebook page; 5cm showing on the official site. Lots of cloud around still, but the forecast is for sunny skies to start tomorrow off and that is the start of the long weekend - Monday is a national holiday. In the multi-course banquet that is the ski season, I hope that we can look at today as an appetizer before the main course (and the fitful snow conditions up today was just the table getting set). Just to torture the metaphor some more, it's a light opening course; it would be great to see a 50-70cm day to really get things set up, and start pushing down all the saplings and vines so we could think about backcountry, but it was only a fall of under 20cm up to the morning today. It is still snowing in fits and starts, so maybe we will see more accumulation through the day (before, it seems, the sun comes out on Saturday, and we hope Saturday only). The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. Some fresh snow to report. The resort itself is reporting 10cm on the upper slopes, 3cm down at Nagasaka and I can add the same to my observed base report. It looks like the Skyline course and associated other courses coming off the lower part of Skyline are closed this morning. I can't find an official reason for that, so we can only guess. Still, a large part of the resort remains open so there's certainly enough terrain out there to enjoy. Head up high for the most fresh. Lifts will be opening 30 minutes early over the upcoming long weekend - on Saturday, Sunday and Monday (the last of which is a national holiday in Japan). What about more fresh snowfall? Well, the forecast appears to show the chance of some regularly over the coming week, though we'll just have to see how it turns out. I'd expect some sunshine tomorrow morning. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Madarao. I am happy to be able to report some fresh snowfall this morning. The resort is reporting 10cm, I have measured 9cm. It is all looking winter-y once again which of course is what we all want. And hopefully a few more to add to it today. Sunshine is forecast for tomorrow with snow due from the evening. This weekend is a long weekend in Japan, with Monday being a national holiday. It is traditionally one of the busiest of the season. There are various events going on including the Madarao Fire Festival tomorrow night (starting from 8:30pm - free sake!) and nighta scheduled for tomorrow and Sunday. We'd hope for more snow on the ground than we have got, but we need to enjoy what we got so let's hope that the weather co-operates and the resort can have a good weekend in every respect. Yesterday wind was causing problems with some lifts but fine weather for the most part especially in the morning with more cloud appearing in the afternoon.
