The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have ever so slightly over 9cm of fresh snow to report again this morning. I was actually over close to Niseko Village earlier and noticed it was more like 5cm over there, so we seem to have got a bit more on the Hirafu side this morning. Still, gradual modest deliveries of snow are always most welcome. It is another of those mornings where these is some (very) light snow falling in places and cloud but some blue sky as well and it is quite bright in places. So a rather mixed picture. Actually, I'd say that over the last 30 minutes or so there's much more of the blue sky and sunshine trying to break through... so much so that I have re-done the images that I originally prepared at 8:00am to reflect that. All lifts appear to be opening as normal this morning. ----- I don't know why the (official) upper snow depth at Niseko Grand Hirafu has increased by 30cm this morning, even taking into account windy conditions with snow being blown about. I am pretty sure I checked the number yesterday morning. So, I don't know. Sounds like it needs investigating! ;) Anyway, I just thought I would point that out in case anyone notices and was wondering. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report oiwa Mountain Base 6.00am: -9°, trace new snow. Moiwa 800m: 8.5m/s 329 deg NNW,-10.6°. Yu no Sawa 1000m: 1.5m/s311deg NW, -13.3°. Niseko Village Mizuno no Sawa 900m: 1.0m/s 304 deg WNW , -12.3° Hirafu 1000m: 7.2m/s N, -13.5°. Hanazono 720m: 0.8m/s 118 deg ESE, -11.7°. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:NW8m/s. Kamui Cape N5m/s, 1028hPa, wave 1.6m. Above 800m a 15m/s strong northerly wind continues with blowing snow causing snowdrift development on the leeward slopes. Although not much snow has fallen there is the possibility of avalanche around 1000m on SE facing knolls and cornices slopes, with a fracture up to 50cm depth. From observation and data generally there is no significant avalanche risk in the morning. However always take care. The atmospheric pressure gradient should flatten and the weather to calm down. Peak gates are expected to be open this morning. Please listen to the patrols advice before you enter out of bounds areas. If you follow someone you don't know you may become lost. Always be cautious. The groomers are good and some areas off-piste are fantastic. Always wear a helmet. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's kind of a bright, almost sunny day in Myoko today. Once again, a light application of snow overnight - just at 5cm of little soft hail pellets, not really great stuff - and a sunny day to follow. The heating bills haven't changed that much, but the diesel cost for running the snow clearing equipment is the lowest I've ever had. Carbon reduction, good; snow condition, bad. I wish we had something interesting in the weather ahead. Well, it will be interesting, or at least unusual, with the freezing level going up and down like crazy, maybe some snow ahead and almost surely some more rain. I'm thinking about dragging the canoe out of my storage area (it's not blocked in by much snow!) and head out to Lake Nojiri... backcountry where you can get some linked turns in! It's still bush and grape vines out there beyond the ski areas. And of course those reading from afar. 过年好 I hope I got that right, forgive me if I didn't. It is a cold morning here. Brrrrr. -9C, Mr Thermometer says. An extra layer kind of day. (Yesterday was very cold out there too). Talking of layers, I have 8cm of fresh snowfall to report from base which is good. It was snowing quite heavily for a while just a little earlier; 'light snow' more accurately describes what I am seeing right now as I am about to post this report. Hopefully the lifts will fare better today as a fair few were put on hold due to strong winds yesterday. As of 8:30am, all lifts appear to be scheduled to be operating as normal. ----- There just seems to be so many major things to be genuinely worried about right now doesn't there, the latest one being this new virus which is obviously very concerning not only for our friends in China. Benkei cape: NW14m/s, Kamui cape: N8m/s, 1029hPa, 2.8m waves. Annupuri 1000m snow depth 135cm. A wintery pressure distribution is persisting and wind-affected snow is accumulating in leeward slopes. The newly formed snowdrifts are unstable and are prone to slide in some slopes above 800m elevation. The avalanche risk will remain high during the morning in slopes with heavy snowdrift development such as the Kozan no sawa (Backbowl) & O-sawa (Annupuri bowl) 900-1000m SE aspects slopes. The same conditions applies in surrounding peaks. All peak gates are scheduled to open, however it will remain dependant on lift operations and ski patrol’s final decision. Please follow the instructions. Do not ski off-limits areas such as Haru no Taki to seek fresh tracks. Your lift pass will be confiscated if you get caught. Resort managers will come find you even if you run away. The snow in the trees is not in bad shape. It’s cold today, beware of frostbites. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning everyone. I was up at Hakuba 47 yesterday morning. It was good to have snow falling up top but as lunchtime approached it has turned to more sleet-like and then rain; like down below at base. No new cm of snow to report this morning. There's lots of cloud around; there has been some light rain in places down below earlier. Right now higher up there seems to be brighter areas with some blue sky and even some sunshine breaking through. Rain or sun? I'll take the sun please. I realise that many people are here to enjoy themselves - and they are indeed enjoying themselves. For those people, and not just myself, I hope for the best conditions possible. Obviously. OK, so I am looking at forecasts and it looks like there's some snowy goodies lined up for early week. Might February be our fave months of the year? I hope so! The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Today I have to post my report earlier than usual as I need to get myself somewhere else this morning. It was indeed a beautiful morning yesterday. I was out there for a few hours and shared some lifts with people enjoying themselves. The general condition of this season in Japan (the not as much snow as usual thing) seems to be a big topic with many; one group had decided to change their destination to Niseko after originally planning to be at another popular resort on Honshu... Snow has been falling from early on today and it is coming down quite nicely now. I have 6cm to record here as of 8am and hopefully that will be added to through the day today. We might need to watch out for windy conditions today so keep an eye on lift operations. Before the lifts get going they all seem to be planning to be operating as normal. Niseko is busy right now with many people arriving for their holidays to celebrate the Chinese New Year. Fresh snowfall to greet them is most definitely a good thing! ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -6℃, 3cm snowfall in 12h and growing. Moiwa 800m: 315°(NW) 5.0m/s, -5.1℃, 5cm snowfall and growing. Hirafu 1000m: 88°(E) 2.1m/s, -6.9℃. Hanazono 720m: 110°(ESE) 2.9m/s, -4.4℃. Niseko Village 900m: 264°(WSW) 3.2m/s, -6.3℃. Benkei cape: NNW15m/s, Kamui cape: NW12m/s, 1017hPa, 1.3m waves. A momentary heavy snowfall came as a cold front passed pre-dawn. The snow&wind will pick up as the cold front moves east and cornices and snowdrifts will start to develop. There were no prominent avalanche hazards observed in the morning, however the hazard level will rise in leeward slopes above 1000m such as the Backbowl, Osawa, Iwao NE gully during the day. Snow conditions changes day by day. It’s recommended to avoid open terrains and stay in the trees today. Sunlight is weak and the obstacles are hard to see. Beware of hitting trees and/or falling into holes. Better carry an extra goggle. It’s strongly recommended to wear a helmet, carry a beacon, shovel and probe. Those can save your life and help save others too. All gates are scheduled to open. Listen to the ski patrol’s instructions. Annupuri Gate 7 will open today, but there are still many obstacles, beware. Do not cross rope to Yu no sawa. A storm is in its way; beware of sudden weather changes. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Good morning from Zao and apologies for the missed report yesterday. Yesterday we enjoyed fresh snow on the ground early morning but mostly clear blue skies during the day with just a few thin clouds in places. It was a beautiful day made better with fresh snow to enjoy. The snow depth numbers are far from large still but it is still good to see them rise to 80cm. The other really good news is that more lifts are now operating and more courses are available open. In fact there's now only 5 lifts on hold as far as I can tell which is great news. In the daily information I post below, I am now noting the lifts and courses that are NOT open, rather than the ones that are open. There are still limitations and we are not fully open yet, but it is of course very good to see more at last opening up. There is no cm of fresh snowfall to report this morning from base (the snowfall number in the report today is from yesterday), and it is has been a cloudy morning with light snow currently falling. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It's an absolute beauty of an early morning. I have 9cm of fresh snow to report overnight here at base; hopefully that means we might have got a double digit number higher up. We should be in for a day of clear skies and sunshine. Everywhere looks ever so beautiful with the fresh white snow and those blue skies. With a special mention to the beautiful landscapes. I love being here so much. I don't think I need many words today - everything should be open as planned this morning and so I will leave it there and see you tomorrow. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -5℃, calm and 10cm low-pressure snowfall. Moiwa 800m: 354°(N) 3.8m/s, -5.0℃. Hirafu 1000m: 352°(N)5.0m/s, -7.6℃. Hanazono 720m: 348°(NNW) 2.0m/s, -4.5℃. Niseko Village 900m: 328°(NNW)1.5m/s, -7.4℃. Annupuri 1000m snow depth: 155cm. Benkei cape: NNW6m/s, Kamui cape: NNW5m/s, 1021hPa, 0.8m waves. 15cm of low-pressure snowfall has blanketed slopes above 800m in the past 12h and have partially formed slabs due to the temperature drop and wind during the night. No prominent weak layers was observed during the morning tests, however 30cm thick surface slab avalanches are likely to occur in leeward slopes with snowdrift accumulation around 1000m elevation. Old tracks are still present, however the snow in the trees is in decent conditions. The power balance between the Siberian cold airmass and the Sea of Japan warm airmass seems to influence the route of the low-pressure systems, eventually having an impact on the snowfall pattern of this season. Either way, it’s nice to see some snowfall. The peak gates are schedule to open from the morning. Always keep in mind that the out of bounds area is not the resort anymore. Have a good read of the Niseko Rules. Annupuri gate 1 is schedule to open today. Beware of trees and bushes. Fresh snow from yesterday and a fine morning. Cold start. What more could we want? (Loads more upcoming snowfall aside of course!) It should be a very fine morning. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . There is another 9cm of new snow to report this morning at village level. On top of yesterdays 15cm, that is a total of 24cm in two days, and the quality of the skiing has been transformed as a result. Snow has stopped falling and the sky above looks good with a mix of blue sky, cloud and morning sun. It is -8c as I write this and the temperature will rise up to a max of -2c.
