The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We did get some rain later on yesterday (quite heavy at times) but that stopped overnight and the roads are drying up this morning. It's generally quite bright but still quite a lot of cloud around... for the moment. From this morning through mid week next week we are forecast lots of sunshine and warmth with temps due to rise above 20C from Sunday. There's not much wind due either, so it should be a beautiful spring weekend. There are now just three more days of the season for Naeba and Yuzawa Nakazato Snow Resort. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. I think we avoided much rain during the day yesterday quite well, but it was raining quite a lot last night (foggy too). It is still wet and damp this morning. Just some light spots of rain just now when I was outside. Kagura was reporting rain (and fog) at 8am. The rain will probably linger for the whole day - maybe easing off at times - and tonight into tomorrow morning too. If we are lucky by lunchtime tomorrow it will have stopped. Sunday is still due to be sunny and a little warmer once again. ----- The top Kagura Number 5 lift is closed today due to poor visibility. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There's some heavy looking cloud around early this morning. Fog is reported at higher areas of Kagura too. Hopefully that will clear up and we might get some sun later on. As the forecasts stand now there looks like there is a chance of some light rain tomorrow morning (not for a long time) with better conditions again in the afternoon. There's just three more days of the season left at Kandatsu Snow Resort. From Monday, we'll be down to GALA Yuzawa and Kagura. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Cloudy skies start our Golden Week holiday period with a real chance of rain, probably starting early afternoon. It might be heavy rain later on and it might be a bit windy. Kagura reporting a temperature of +6C as of 7am this morning and it is currently just above 11C in town. Tomorrow should be friendlier weather with some sunshine due again. Earlier this morning there was a lot of cloud around, but it has been clearing and there is a lot of blue sky around now. The sun is out and the mountains look beautiful. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Excellent news this morning with snow coming down in true Yuzawa style. It didn't feel quite so excellent yesterday evening. After some fine weather during the day, we got rained on, but it thankfully quite quickly turned into snow and apparently has been snowing all night. Here's how much fresh snowfall ski areas are reporting this morning: - Kagura: 60cm - Naeba: 40cm - Yuzawa Kogen: 40cm - Maiko: 50cm - Ishiuchi: 40cm At our measuring point there is 41cm, with just under 25cm to the south in the Shiozawa area of Minamiuonuma. Now this feels more like normal! And with more due over the next few days, conditions are set to get a significant boost. Brilliant. Let's see how long it can continue. It has been snowing since the report yesterday, heavily at times. :) Here's how much fresh snowfall ski areas are reporting this morning: - Kagura: 20cm - Naeba: 15-20cm - Maiko: 40cm Those numbers for Kagura and Naeba seem surprisingly low, Maiko is more like what we are seeing. By 6pm last night we measured 11cm of fresh snow at our measuring point in town. This morning as of 8:30am there is another 29cm on there, so a total of 40cm since yesterday. This is good! There's a curious lack of the huge icicles you sometimes get on house roofs and stormy winds (in town at least), but these last few days Yuzawa seems more like itself. With a few more days of snow on the forecasts, it looks set to continue building up very nicely. The snow depth numbers that the ski areas are reporting also look more normal now! Sudden heavy snow of course brings dangers and there is increased avalanche risk out there now with Kagura closing a few runs including the Kagura-Tashiro connecting run. The top Number 5 lift will be closed again. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There was a short period early afternoon yesterday when we saw some blue sky and even a bit of sunshine, but apart from that it has been snowing for most of the time since yesterday and apparently quite heavily overnight. Last night at 6pm we had 8cm at our measuring point and as of 8am this morning there is another 33cm on there. So that's 41cm since yesterday. That's over 120cm over the last three reports. Nice. Here's what ski areas are reporting this morning: - Kagura: 50cm - Yuzawa Kogen: 30cm - Maiko: 50cm A few ski areas around the area are again this morning mentioning avalanche and snow slide risk. The top area at Iwappara is closed this morning for that reason. It's natural to be very excited about all this sudden snow, but important to remember the inherent dangers out there while having the fun. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. For a while during the day yesterday it was snowing as heavily as it has been this season so far. Really coming down at a fast rate. By the evening, there was 26cm on our measuring point and there's a further 25cm on there this morning. Total of 51cm snowfall. That's more than what ski areas are reporting this morning but... it is what it is! Perhaps it is one of those times when they like to underplay the snowfall. Don't want to scare folks! It is still snowing this morning and will probably continue through the day today, but it's due to start easing off. We might get some clearer skies tomorrow and the day after. The biggest wish is that it remains cold so we can keep the quality of all this beautiful snow. In ski area news, the Tashiro Area and top lift at Kagura are closed today due to wind and weather conditions. They are reporting a temperature of -12C up top there. Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway (and the top section of that ski area) is also closed at the start of the day, but may open if conditions allow. The Yuzawa Snow Link connections between Yuzawa Kogen and GALA Yuzawa (Ropeway) and GALA Yuzawa and Ishiuchi Maruyama (lift) will not be opening as planned on Saturday (7th January). The reason being given is staffing issues (ie. not enough people). It looks like it is being officially 'delayed', so not clear how that will play out. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Just like how sometimes when it doesn't snow, it doesn't seem to want to snow; sometimes, when it starts snowing, it doesn't seem to want to quit! We've measured another 33cm since the report yesterday (10cm by 6pm and a further 23cm overnight). That takes us to over 2m of observed snowfall - at town level - over the last five Yuzawa Now reports. Normal service seems to have resumed! Maiko are reporting 50cm of fresh snowfall since yesterday; other ski areas 20-30cm. While we thought it might have stopped by now, it is still snowing. It is due to ease off sometime during the day today and there might well be some sunshine tomorrow morning. (Though we might get more snow overnight into Sunday). It looks like Kagura, Naeba and Yuzawa Kogen are all opening as planned this morning after some disruption due to weather yesterday. The top area at Iwappara is still closed due to avalanche risk. No fresh snow being reported yesterday by ski areas (though we did get 2cm post-report yesterday morning, so that's where that is coming from!) This morning there is cloud around but also blue sky and sunshine. It's a fine morning. Fairly chilly early on, but due to be a mild day - hopefully not too warm. We might get some light snowfall overnight, though shouldn't expect much. Monday is a national holiday here in Japan (Coming of Age Day) and so it's a long weekend for many - and usually one of the busier weekends of the ski season. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Fine and sunny weather yesterday... and kind of warm, too. There was a bit of rain last night but it quickly turned into snow and this morning there is several cm of new snow on the ground. Kagura ski area is reporting 5cm (and a temp of -8C at top, but most places are not feeling that cold). It is snowing lightly early morning; the forecast is for cloudy conditions today. We are due more snow from tomorrow night and during the day on Tuesday. After that, by the end of the week there's some mild (warm) temps coming our way. Tomorrow is a national holiday here in Japan. So expect there to be more people about than there usually is on a Monday. Someone asked about the Southern Area at GALA Yuzawa and when it might open. No news to report there yet - that area is never always open, so it is not unusual for it to not be.
