There is a chance of some fresh snow again overnight tonight but beyond that some more sun and what looks like a few days of warmer conditions - not just here but throughout Japan. Tomorrow is a national holiday here; I reckon some folk are taking today off to have a long 4-day holiday; good timing with the snow of the last few days. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . I didn't need many words yesterday morning. It was my best day of the season so far, easy. The resort was busy, but it's big so there's always places to play. Lots of fresh snow and lovely conditions. Yesterday as of 3pm the resort was reporting 10-19cm of fresh snow across the mountain, and some more since then leaves us with close on another 30cm up top. Things are feeling much more like 'normal' now. Phew!!! I was just looking back at my report from this day last year - the official snow depth on the top Yamabiko area was 320cm; Hikage was at 210cm. Today those same numbers are 265cm and 115cm. So, we're still lower than last year but the last week has really helped us play catch up. If all goes well I should have more snow to report tomorrow as it's due to start falling again this afternoon and overnight tonight. The forecast for Wednesday to Friday looks rather... warm. Let us hope not too much. In the meantime, should be another very fine day to be out on the mountain. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Morning from Madarao. After the more stormy conditions of yesterday, things are calmer and clearer this morning. Some lovely blue sky earlier on, it has clouded over somewhat since then and we are due more snowfall from this afternoon. It is a cold morning. The resort isn't reporting any fresh snowfall since yesterday which is a bit puzzling; it was snowing beyond my report yesterday and I have snow to report. Anyway, conditions should be very good this morning. Tomorrow is a national holiday in Japan, so it'll be busier than a normal weekday - especially with the nice conditions we have now... The latest Niseko Now report can be found here The really cold conditions continue, starting the morning with a reading of -12C on my thermometer. Just a thin layer of fresh snowfall to report - ever so slightly over 1cm. So the mountain has not had a reset, first run groomers should be feel good this morning. Did I mention it's really cold still?! That cold looks set to ease off in the second part of the week when Japan as a whole is going to experience a bit of a warmer spell. At the start of the day it looks like the base Ace Family quad is having some issues and not starting the day as normal. ----- It is really pleasing to see other regions of Japan finally getting some proper snowfall. My mind is often boggled when I see some of the nutty amounts of snow that they can sometimes get in 24 hours. Myoko and other areas of Niigata and Nagano, I'm looking at you! I can't remember ever reporting a full 1m in any of my reports. We tend to just concentrate on 'quality' up here in Niseko. Ooooh, controversial! (I'm just kidding). (Sort of). ;) But seriously, I do recommend checking out some of the other reports on this site; it's always and interesting read to see how other regions are doing. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base: -13.0°, no new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: N 354deg 2.6m/s , -14.2°. Yu no Sawa 1000m: N 4deg 9.3m/s, -16.9. Niseko Village 900m: WSW 1.3m/s, -16.4°. Hirafu 1000m : N 346deg (speed no data) , -17.2°. Hanazono 720m: NNW 344deg 5.7m/s, -14.2°. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:NE 5m/s. Kamui Cape N 2m/s, 1016hPa, wave 1.3m. Annupuri 1000m: snow depth 170cm. The atmospheric pressure gradient is flattening out and the mountain base and seas are calm. A moderately strong north wind persists above 800m with, depending on location, 30-50cm of snow drift development. From observation a fracture is occurring at 20cm, however avalanche risk is low. To avoid avalanches from a deep layer do not wait around in the valley bottom. Peak gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrols advice. Be prepared before going out the gates. There is a bit more snow now, but still not that much. Be careful of partially buried trees, if you hook one its an easy broken leg. The low temps continue, take care of frost bite. Do not duck ropes to enter strictly off limits area Haru no Taki. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Look above and you will see brilliant blue sky. Conditions like this usually mean it is cold, and today is the kind of temperature that would be expected early Feb in Furano. It is -25c in the village and -28c at the top of the resort. The sun is out is full force and clouds probably won't move in until mid afternoon. With good recent snow falls the slopes are in excellent condition with plenty of fluffy powder still on the main courses. I missed the report yesterday so the new snow of 8cm reported here relates to the measurement from yesterday morning. The latest Geto Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Geto. Another 5-10cm of fresh snow being reported by the resort and 8cm to add to my observed report since yesterday morning. Yesterday was generally cloudy through the day with light snow for nighta. The resort is saying sunny as the weather conditions - not sure Id go that far but perhaps it will clear up. Or maybe not. Whatever, it is keeping cold and there's generally not much of a wind. It should be a good day. Shooter 2-4 tree run courses now open. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . A very good morning from Madarao. Rather limited visibility out there. The great news is that there is also another fine thick layer of snow out there too. The resort is - rather conservatively, I feel - reporting 30cm. I am measuring more than that, I imagine wind has been a factor blowing the snow around. Early reports of some possible delays with some lifts opening. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. More snow to report this morning with Happo, 47 and Goryu all reporting 20-25cm of fresh snow on their upper areas. Check out the numbers that Cortina are reporting though... 60cm! That sure sounds good. (Though quite a few courses over there are closed at the start of the day as they apparently deal with the snow). Tsugaike Kogen are also reporting 45cm of snow up there so it does sound like there has been a lot of fresh over there. Great news. With a decent layer of snow across the mountains conditions should be excellent this morning, though wind might a factor (and meaning there'll be wind blow stashes in places). At Happo-one, you can now ski back down to the Gondola base via Riesen as the Shirakaba South Side course area is now open. Hurray! And the top Grat quad is on hold. Booo! Good to see the upper official snow depths at Hakuba Goryu, 47 and Tsugaike hit the 2m mark. There's some blue sky appearing in places amongst the clouds right now. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It is another very cold morning. Annupuri are reporting a temperature of -19C up top as of 6:44am. It's -13C here. Brrrrrr. This morning I can report 6cm of fresh snowfall down here at Hirafu base. It is cloudy with some light snow falling. If they can de-ice in time, I'd expect all of the lifts to be moving as planned this morning! ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base: -12.0°, 15cm in last 24hrs, 5cm new snow in last 12hrs. Moiwa 800m: N 354deg 7.0m/s , -14.1°, snowdrift development. Yu no Sawa 1000m: N 2deg 4.1m/s, -16.8°. Niseko Village 900m: NNW 350deg 3.2m/s, -15.9°. Hirafu 1000m : NNW 350deg 7.3m/s , -17.0°. Hanazono 720m: NNW 340deg 5.4m/s, -17.0°. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:N14m/s. Kamui Cape NNE 7m/s, 1016hPa, wave 2.7m. Annupuri 1000m: snow depth 175cm. Above 800m wind peaked overnight at 10pm and 4am at around 20m/s. It has dropped to around 12m/s from the north now. Although snowfall has been small, snowdrift development has been significant, up to 50cm depth. From observation snowdrifts(soft slab) are starting to stabilise, avalanche risk is medium. Above 900m snow is variable and some wind crust can be found, generally the mountain is reset with good snow though. Peak gates are expected to be open. We highly recommend you to take beacon, probe, shovel, short rope, emergency food and wear a helmet. Accidents on cold days like today have an added danger - Hypothermia – can cause a death even after rescued. Once you go through the gates you are not in the ski area anymore. Always make cautious decisions. Beware a sudden weather change, frostbite. Snow in the trees is a bit heavy but still good.
