The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Resorts are reporting 10-20cm of fresh snowfall on their upper areas and 5-10cm down at base. And I have measured 8cm. (Phew). Should be a good morning! Back to being cold too, so get wrapped up well. Hopefully there'll be more to report tomorrow too as it continues to snow. Less good news is stronger winds affecting lifts at the Happo-one resort. As of 9am, the gondola and upper lifts are on hold. It appears that just the Nakiyama triple and Kokusai Number 1 pair are going up from base. Cortina has some restrictions too but other resorts appear to be opening as normal, which brings me to.... Regarding details of individual ski resort operations - I continue to do my best providing as many details as possible each morning, but operations change literally every day; and sometimes during the day. Such changeable conditions means that covering the situation is... difficult. I highly recommend that if you are here in Hakuba and heading out to a ski resort, you check with your chosen destination before going. If you are staying at an accommodation I am sure the staff there will be able to help too. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. And it feels like a good Monday morning. It doesn't feel as cold as yesterday (to me anyway, perhaps due to it coming in from the south), but I am measuring 17cm of fresh snowfall this morning here at base. I note the Avalanche report is reporting 25cm. I wouldn't say that it is prime quality, but that is certainly not a complaint and I am very keen to get out there - as are others lining up for first lifts early on! The southerly winds might be a bit of a 'doh!' to cunning plans being made for turns at the top of the mountain though, as top lifts are on hold at the start of the day. At the moment just as I am about to post the report it is cloudy with even a bit of sun poking through in places. It was snowing lightly until just a short while ago. Perhaps changeable weather during the day today and hopefully we'll get some more proper snow at times over the next few days. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain Base: -4.0°, 25cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: S 178deg 10 min avg 5.4m/s , -5.2°. Yu no Sawa 1000m: WSW 231deg 6.4m/s, -7.3. Niseko Village 900m: S 175 deg 7.4m/s, -6.5°. Hirafu 1000m : S 183deg 12m/s(max 18m/s at 5am) , -7.4°. Hanazono 720m: SSW 191deg 9.4m/s (18m/s at 5am) , -5.0°. Annupuri 1100m: no data. Coastal data: Benkei Cape:SSE 12m/s. Kamui Cape NE 13m/s, 1000hPa, wave 2.2m. A low pressure system is moving slowly northward up the Sea of Japan bringing blizzard conditions and snowdrift development from the east. On the west side of the range at 800m snow drift development has been over 100cm and is easily fracturing from impact. The cold low pressure snowfall has formed soft slabs which are not easily compacting. The avalanche risk is extremely high above 800m on cornice slopes and around knolls. Predicted to fracture on 16th Feb low pressure front snowfall layer. Better not get on open steep slopes today. The trees are reset with 25cm of new snow – good. But watch out for the hard layer underneath. Most accidents happen during bad weather like blizzards. Make flexible plans according to the weather. Visibility is poor today, watch out crashing. Is your beacon on? They are not just a fashion accessory. Peak gates are expected to be closed. Enjoy the snow on the sides of the runs. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Well, after that spell of rather mild days with temperatures venturing into positive numbers, I am happy to report that it definitely feels colder this morning. And! While it is not snowing where I am, I can see light snow falling on the Hanazono live webcam. The forecast is looking good for fresh snow in the first part of the week. The weather may start getting a bit wild from later on in the day tomorrow. If we do get the snow that's on the forecast, snow conditions across the mountain should be much improved by the middle of the week. Perhaps sooner! Patches of soil are starting to show up under 600m elevation due to the warm temp of the last few days. Be careful riding. There is no fresh snow anywhere and the mountain is tracked out. A crust layer is covering the surface in the trees too, making it difficult to come down safely. It is strongly recommended to wear a helmet. Small scale glide avalanche risk is rising in cliff slopes such as in Haru no Taki. Do not cross boundary ropes for your own sake. All gates are scheduled to open from the morning. Be careful. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba on this national holiday (National Foundation Day). Due to it being a holiday, it will probably more feel like a weekend than a Tuesday. Anyway some good numbers to report this morning with Happo-one, Goryu and 47 all reporting 15-20cm across the mountain, Cortina reporting 30cm and I am noticing a Tsugaike source reporting 35cm. Very nice. Early morning we have a bunch of visibility conditions - it's still limited up on the upper areas of Happo-one and Goryu right now, but in other areas it's much clearer and there is quite a lot of blue sky opening up above us and the sun is out. It should be a really good day. From tomorrow it will be getting much milder than it has been - and more than we would like - for a few days. Let's hope it doesn't warm up too much. I'm heading out now. The biggest problem is choosing where to go. This morning Kumanoyu are reporting 30cm of snowfall since last night. Yakebitaiyama are reporting 40cm. I have measured 36cm myself. Wind has been blowing about and so there's going to be more/less in places, but I reckon that is a fair number. Wind does not seem to be affecting any lifts at the moment. So wrap up well and enjoy. The snow should ease off later today and then perhaps we'll see some sun tomorrow. All areas and connections at Shiga Kogen are now open (with just a few minor exceptions). The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. And it is very much another good one. The resort is reporting another 45cm up top and 30cm down at base; I can report a bit less than that but still a very nice layer of fresh across the mountain. It is still snowing but probably won't last beyond lunchtime. It is National Foundation Day today - meaning that today is a national holiday, so it will likely be busy like a weekend. Especially as we have all this lovely fresh snow to play in. Tomorrow is a normal weekday and we are forecast sunshine along with rising temperatures and the warmer spell will go on through at least Friday. It looks like it is going to go from being really cold to being warmer than we'd like, but hopefully we'll be back to cold and snow by the beginning of next week. I'm guessing there are more than a few people reading this with big grins on their faces having planned to be here round about now - and worrying through a lot of January. Congratulations! The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I have a (just about) 1cm dusting of snow to report this morning from base. It is cloudy but there's some blue sky as well over on this side - Mt Yotei currently has some thick grey cloud over the top third. Feels fairly calm too so all lifts should be opening as planned from the start of the day. After this spell of some very cold conditions, somewhat milder temperatures are likely in the coming days - probably from tomorrow through Friday - but hopefully we will see a return to the cold come the weekend. Today is a national holiday in Japan. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -6.1℃, 3cm snowfall. Moiwa 800m: N354°9.7m/s, -8.4℃, 5cm snowfall, 15cm snowdrifts. Yu no sawa1000m: N354°6.7m/s, -10.9℃. Niseko Village 900m: NNW351°3.0m/s, -10.2℃. Hirafu 1000m: NNW329°speed n/a, -10.9℃. Hanazono 720m: NNW324°6.4m/s, -8.6℃. Benkei cape: N9m/s, Kamui cape: N9m/s, 1022hPa, 2.3m waves. Annupuri 1000m snow depth 170cm. The isobars got a little tight for some time and made a northerly wind pick up and developing cornices. Snowfall is scarce and no drastic development of snowdrifts can be found in leeward slopes. The general avalanche risk is low today. All peak gates are scheduled to open from the morning. Be prepared before going out of bounds. Old tracks remain throughout the mountain. Beware of collapsing cornices and obstacles under the surface. Better wear a helmet. The Niseko Rules applies to any person and there should be no exceptions or special cases. Regarding what happened at Gate 6 yesterday, we’d first like to apologize to the guests who were treated unfairly. Second, the Avalanche Institute, responsible for the mountain safety within the all mountain committee, severely alerts the resort management members that forcefully requested a special treatment to the ski patrol at the gate.
