Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 11cm
Snowfall at base this season 651cm

Posted on Tuesday 18th February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.

A little fresh snow today to cheer us up. A bit.

The temperature is still in the minus category at 8:30, also something nice (get that bracing, almost winter feel of the cold again). Not a whole lot, to be honest, but the snow is still falling, and could keep going through the day. Some pretty strong winds are also predicted, and the wind pattern offshore looks like there should be some breezes hitting us, but so far nothing.

The sun is trying to peek out from time to time, too, something that's happened far too often this season. What happened to week-long spells of snow, with no sun at all. Pale skin; happy skiing.

There is a pretty nasty breakable crust layer on the surface of natural snow, at least at the base, the result of the cooling over the past day. The groomed slopes should be fine, but the crust could be unpleasant for people on boots. Maybe on skis, too.
