  • Yuzawa Now: Monday 27th January 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 25cm Snowfall at base this season 428cm Posted on Monday 27th January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The rain continued during the morning yesterday at town level, though it was snowing on the mountain depending on where you were of course. In the afternoon though it was snowing in town as well which was good to see. By night time it was actually snowing quite heavily at times and a strong wind blowing it about as well. I moved 10cm of snow off my car at 9pm last night and this morning there's another 15cm. So that's 25cm since yesterday afternoon. Resorts around the valley are reporting similar numbers, 20-30cm, and with the high up Kagura reporting 30cm of new snowfall. It is still snowing here this morning though the forecast has the snow clouds clearing up. Leaving us with either just cloud or perhaps even some sun later on in the day. Certainly looks like a clearing up might happen. Happily, after that mild start, temperatures dropped yesterday afternoon and remain below zero this morning. It was -5C at 9am. So should be a good day out on the slopes today. --- Official resort snow depths @ Monday 27th January 2014, AM: Naeba: 190cm Kagura (Tashiro): 260cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 310cm NASPA Ski Garden: 225cm Gala Yuzawa: 300cm Iwappara: 180cm Yuzawa Kogen: 270cm Yuzawa Nakazato: 160cm Yuzawa Park: 170cm ---- Maiko Snow Resort: 280cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 250cm Joetsu Kokusai: 220cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Monday 27th January 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 428cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 33 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th and 13th January) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 292cm reported on 18 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 29th January 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 433cm Posted on Wednesday 29th January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. So yesterday morning started off clear and sunny with blue skies all round and icy conditions. It was a very fine morning though by noon thin clouds had started to appear and by mid afternoon it was an overcast and cloudy cover over the region. By evening we got rained on, but overnight it was snowing. There's not a huge amount down in town, but resorts around town are this morning reporting around 10cm - with the most up at Kagura which is reporting 20cm of fresh snowfall overnight. Snowfall has eased off in the last half hour or so, and while it's still very cloudy you can see the sun trying to break through. The forecast is indeed for the snow to ease off, just be cloudy and then some sunshine later on this afternoon. So it looks like that might well be what happens. As of 9am it was -3C in town, a high of +2 forecast. Tomorrow is unfortunately likely to be warmer again and by the end of the day it it likely to rain, before turning into snow. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 31st January 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 433cm Posted on Friday 31st January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Not the most exciting things to report this morning. After a cloudy morning, later in the afternoon we enjoyed some clearer skies and avoided rain. Until night time. I was actually woken once in the middle of the night be the sound of heavy rain which obviously isn't good. This morning, Kagura are saying that they got 10cm of snow with resorts around town just a dusting. It seems that while it was raining down in town there was snow falling on the mountain. Wet and heavy very probably, but better than rain for sure! It's approaching 9:30am now and I'm happy to report that it has turned to snow. Light wet snow right now - not the kind that will end up with cm on the ground - but snow forecast until later this evening. This morning there's a wind blowing on the mountains and it looks like Kagura is on it's Mitsumata Ropeway to Kagura No1 lift and Tashiro Ropeway to Tashiro No1 lift pattern. Winds are likely to persist for the day. We're expecting sun tomorrow and then unfortunately rain on Sunday as it warms up. With the mild conditions, not much fresh lately and rain... well, snow conditions not the best. --- Official resort snow depths @ Friday 31st January 2014, AM: Naeba: 190cm Kagura (Tashiro): 260cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 310cm NASPA Ski Garden: 200cm Gala Yuzawa: 280cm Iwappara: 150cm Yuzawa Kogen: 270cm Yuzawa Nakazato: 150cm Yuzawa Park: 160cm ---- Maiko Snow Resort: 280cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 220cm Joetsu Kokusai: 210cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Friday 31st January 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 433cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 34 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th and 13th January) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It didn't really stop snowing for long yesterday, though this morning we have around 10cm or so of fresh snow outside. Resorts in town seem to be reporting around that number, with Kagura coming up with 15-20cm. It's still snowing as well at 9:30am, so not clearing up just yet here like in other neighbouring areas... perhaps later today, very probably by tomorrow. Good that we are getting the fresh snow in though as once this clears up it'll the skies that should be clear. Clear and sunny and gradually warming up as well. Tuesday onwards the forecast is looking decidedly 'too warm' and well clear above the zero point. That's next week though. For the moment it's very good conditions and should be a good weekend. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 21st February 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 617cm Posted on Friday 21st February 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Morning from Yuzawa. It didn't get that cold overnight last night, only down to around -1 degree and that's where we are now at 9am. Some snow overnight - up to around 10cm in some places around town - and it wasn't snowing just a while ago but has started up again. There's a moderate northerly wind at the moment too. Snow is forecast for the day and on and off through tomorrow as well though the cold front is weakening and there's a chance of clearup. What does look clear is that from Sunday onwards and into next week clear conditions will be what we see most along with milder temperatures especially as we get into next week. Last weekend lots of people couldn't get to Yuzawa due to the disruption to trains and expressways. There should be none of those problems this weekend and so it will be back to a busy Saturday. The car parks will be filling up early! If we can get some more snow out of the clouds today, conditions should be really great too. --- Official resort snow depths @ Friday 21st February 2014, AM: Naeba: 280cm Kagura (Tashiro): 280cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 330cm NASPA Ski Garden: 315cm Gala Yuzawa: 380cm Iwappara: 245cm Yuzawa Kogen: 330cm Yuzawa Nakazato: 260cm Yuzawa Park: 250cm ---- Maiko Snow Resort: 360cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 290cm Joetsu Kokusai: 250cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Friday 21st February 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 617cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 49 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th and 13th January) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days February 2014 snowfall 184cm reported on 15 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 607cm Posted on Wednesday 19th February 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Snow on and off for most of the day yesterday along with some blowy winds making it feel colder than it actually was. There was one point around lunchtime when a bit of blue sky appeared but it was soon covered up by the next clouds moving in. Just around 5cm to report this morning with resorts reporting up to 10cm (Kagura) early on. It is still snowing at the moment but in the last half hour or so visibility has improved a bit and the forecast is mostly for cloudy conditions today so I wouldn't expect much snow today. After being at least part closed the last few days, Kagura is fully open this morning - so there should be some great powder to track up there this morning. Currently -3C in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 18th February 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 20cm Snowfall at base this season 602cm Posted on Tuesday 18th February 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It hasn't stopped snowing much at all recently, though the snowfall is less intense than it was on Saturday in particular. This has definitely been the strongest showing for snow - and continued snow - this season though and it has been piling up. This morning Kagura report 10-20cm and Maiko are reporting 30cm. They are the new snow numbers coming in so far from resorts, and there's 20cm or so where I am. So there's another decent refresh on the slopes out there. As mentioned before with the transport issues, resorts have generally been less busy than you'd expect them to be, so there's lots of untouched snow out there right now. Still quite strong winds and Tashiro is once again closed today. Mitsumata Ropeway to Kagura Number 1 romance lift is what is open at Kagura this morning. GALA Yuzawa still has the Central and North areas open, but the South Area remains closed. From what I can tell early on other resorts are opening as planned. It is about -3 degrees now at 8:30am. • Yuzawa Now: Monday 17th February 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 582cm Posted on Monday 17th February 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. A few cm of snow on my car this morning but it looks like more on the mountain with Kagura reporting 10-20cm, Naeba reporting 5cm, Maiko reporting 20cm. Snow and wind on and off yesterday, both strong at times. The sun was out and some blue skies over the region for a short while as well in the middle of all that lot. A pretty wild weekend for the most part. The good thing out of it being the snow refresh we have received. There is probably 70cm or so added to the snow bank near where I live since the beginning of the weekend. Must be good for the resorts - though keep in mind avalanche risk will have increased. Still windy enough this morning for Tashiro to be closed and Kagura only open from Mitsumata Ropeway to the Kagura No1 pair lift. Over at GALA Yuzawa, the South Area is closed (due to the volume of snow - hopefully they'll deal with that quickly) but the Central and North areas are open as normal. This means of course that the Ropeway connecting GALA Yuzawa with Yuzawa Kogen is not running. Moderate snowfall at the moment as of 10am this morning with up to 5cm expected before 4pm. Snow showers is the forecast for today and tomorrow. Traffic problems persist with the Kanetsu Expressway still closed this morning from Yuzawa down to just north of Tokyo. --- Official resort snow depths @ Monday 17th February 2014, AM: Naeba: 250cm Kagura (Tashiro): 280cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 330cm NASPA Ski Garden: 270cm Gala Yuzawa: 350cm Iwappara: 250cm Yuzawa Kogen: 320cm Yuzawa Nakazato: 240cm Yuzawa Park: 260cm ---- Maiko Snow Resort: 340cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 280cm Joetsu Kokusai: 250cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Monday 17th February 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 582cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 46 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th and 13th January) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days February 2014 snowfall 149cm reported on 12 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 16th February 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 32cm Snowfall at base this season 577cm Posted on Sunday 16th February 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday was one of those days for sure. Heavy snow, strong winds at times, blocked roads, shut down trains and roads... both train and road connections (including Route 17 which was blocked in the Mikuni area due to a snowslide I believe) to Tokyo were cut off for large parts of yesterday preventing people from getting here - and leaving as well. It looks like the Kanetsu Expressway is still closed this morning to Yuzawa. The Shinkansen seems to be moving but some trains cancelled and some later than usual, so we are not back to normal yet. So yes it was really coming down hard in the morning in particular and I reckon by the end of the day there was at least another 30cm for me to move. Overnight it had eased off as there's only a few more cm this morning. (So I'm going to put 32cm for the new snowfall town area today including what we got yesterday). We've had well over 50cm that's for sure and in some places I would expect considerably more. The bottom line is that wherever you choose to ski today, you'll find lots of fresh snow. But choice is more limited than normal. Yesterday evening Kagura were warning that only part would be open again today due to avalanche risk in places, but they are actually 100% closed this morning - citing strong wind as the reason and those winds up to 20m/s. Naeba is only having a limited opening this morning. I see that GALA Yuzawa is also closed for the day due to the wind conditions up there. Other lifts may be affected but I can't see any major news at the moment.... resorts lower down and at town level seem to be open. So this morning... it is snowing now, but actually seems much wetter than the snow we had yesterday. It is actually above zero degrees as well now, which explains that, currently +1C. Snowy conditions likely to continue into tomorrow. --- Official resort snow depths @ Sunday 16th February 2014, AM: Some not updated for the day yet Naeba: 250cm Kagura (Tashiro): 280cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 330cm NASPA Ski Garden: 270cm Gala Yuzawa: 330cm Iwappara: 260cm Yuzawa Kogen: 320cm Yuzawa Nakazato: 230cm Yuzawa Park: 220cm ---- Maiko Snow Resort: 320cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 300cm Joetsu Kokusai: 250cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Sunday 16th February 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 577cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 45 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th and 13th January) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days February 2014 snowfall 144cm reported on 11 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 15th February 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 30cm Snowfall at base this season 545cm Posted on Saturday 15th February 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It's snowing heavily this morning. And we have a fair bit as well. 30cm on my car, 20-30cm being reported by Naeba, 30-40cm by Kagura and 30+cm being reported by Maiko Snow Resort. (They are the places that clearly state new cm each morning and so why they get the mention!). So you can get the idea. It is still snowing fairly heavily now though as the forecast told us yesterday - it's not that cold. Hovering around 0 degrees now and forecast to slowly rise through the day and overnight. Yesterday we were told to even expect the snow to turn into rain later today, though fingers crossed we can avoid that. We might have to get away with sleet / wet snow. I also believe that the Kanetsu Expressway is closed from Tokyo up through to Tsukiyono at the moment. Also hearing that the Joetsu Shinkansen is undergoing checks early this morning due to the conditions. That will stop a lot of people who were planning on being here this weekend from coming and so I would expect the slopes around town to be quieter than normal. Snowy and windy conditions expected through tomorrow. Because of the wind, Kagura are only part open this morning - Mistumata up to the quad at Kagura, and Tashiro to the number 1 quad. Other skijo appear to be open as normal this morning though I might expect a few exposed lifts to be moving slower than usual and there's always the chance of changes. --- Official resort snow depths @ Saturday 15th February 2014, AM: Some not updated for the day yet Naeba: 230cm Kagura (Tashiro): 270cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 320cm NASPA Ski Garden: 223cm Gala Yuzawa: 290cm Iwappara: 215cm Yuzawa Kogen: 290cm Yuzawa Nakazato: 185cm Yuzawa Park: 175cm ---- Maiko Snow Resort: 255cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 230cm Joetsu Kokusai: 200cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Saturday 15th February 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 545cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 44 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th and 13th January) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days February 2014 snowfall 112cm reported on 10 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 14th February 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 515cm Posted on Friday 14th February 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Light snow on and off again this morning so far - just a few cm overnight and that's pretty much what the skijo are reporting as well, including Kagura. As I write this, it's just cloudy and about -3 degrees in the Yuzawa town area. Are we on for a storm and heavy snow in the next 48 hours? There are warnings of snow on the Kanto plains again today and Tokyo might once again be in for snowfall. Last time that happened we didn't get a huge amount here. What about this time? It's difficult to say, some of the forecasts are looking very promising for decent snowfall tonight and through tomorrow as well. But others are less optimistic about the snow and even tell us of the chance of sleet or rain down in town during the day tomorrow when it should remain oddly mild. (Some forecasts even having temps rising to +6 in the afternoon tomorrow!) So it's really not clear what's going to happen. We hope for the heavy snow, obviously. It's useless and only trouble in Tokyo - so bring it over here! What is clear is that tomorrow morning I'll update this and let you know how things are going. --- Official resort snow depths @ Friday 14th February 2014, AM: Naeba: 230cm Kagura (Tashiro): 270cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 320cm NASPA Ski Garden: 223cm Gala Yuzawa: 290cm Iwappara: 175cm Yuzawa Kogen: 290cm Yuzawa Nakazato: 185cm Yuzawa Park: 175cm ---- Maiko Snow Resort: 255cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 230cm Joetsu Kokusai: 200cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Friday 14th February 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 515cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 43 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th and 13th January) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days February 2014 snowfall 82cm reported on 9 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Thursday 13th February 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 513cm Posted on Thursday 13th February 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The sun did make it out at times yesterday but it ended up being more cloudy than was forecast for most of the day. I said that today was due to be dry as well, though this morning we were actually greeted to a thin layer of new snow and it is snowing lightly as we approach 9am. Some local forecasts are still insisting on just cloud through the day today, but I'm hoping this snow might stick around. Resorts are reporting just a dusting up to a few cm of snow, with Kagura reporting 0cm. It is currently -2 degrees in town. The weekend is still looking good for snowfall. --- Official resort snow depths @ Thursday 13th February 2014, AM: Naeba: 230cm Kagura (Tashiro): 270cm Kagura (Mitsumata): 320cm NASPA Ski Garden: 215cm Gala Yuzawa: 290cm Iwappara: 170cm Yuzawa Kogen: 290cm Yuzawa Nakazato: 185cm Yuzawa Park: 175cm ---- Maiko Snow Resort: 260cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 230cm Joetsu Kokusai: 200cm Yuzawa Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Thursday 13th February 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 513cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 42 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 40cm (11th and 13th January) November 2013 snowfall 5cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 131cm reported on 14 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 19 days February 2014 snowfall 80cm reported on 8 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa.
