The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Towards the end of yesterday it started snowing again and was getting blustery at the top of the Chuo No.2 (12). The snow continued overnight (even down to the valley which is a good sign) so a fresh layer today. The Paradise area had good levels of powder yesterday and I expect the same again today but, in most areas, as well. The Sunrise slope is open for those who enjoy wide-sweeping carving. The Omori area was a bit hard and icy underfoot yesterday due to the warmth of the past few days albeit it has soft snow on top. Overnight grooming plus the new snow should have done away with that. It was good to see the Udon restaurant open finally at the top of the Chuo no.2 (12). All should be open today for the weekend. Today's tip: in the excitement of the new snow, and you find yourself at either end of the mountain with time running out before closures and you need to get back to the other side, get yourself either to the bottom of the Zao Ropeway (Yokokura course) or Chuo Ropeway (via Sunrise) and walk to either Ropeway. It only takes 5 minutes and is better than risking being stranded. Plus you'll have a nice long run back to end the day (but it will be getting dark so be warned). The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. Good news! All ski areas in Shiga Kogen are now officially open from today, according to the official website. Not all runs are available but looking at the open map I'd say we're at around 80%, perhaps more. Kumanoyu are reporting just 10cm of fresh snowfall. Yakebitaiyama are reporting 30cm. It is good and cold and the snow quality is excellent. There is still a lot of cloud about and snow is still falling in areas - brighter and even a bit of sun in places - but it should be stopping during the day. Over the next few days the forecast is for more of a chance of clearer skies and sun, with snow due again from Wednesday. That should take us into the New Year. From this morning all of the lifts are planned to be operating at both Madarao and Tangram - so apart from tree run courses the mountain is pretty much open now. :) The clouds have been clearing and there is lots of blue sky around now and the sun shining down on the mountain. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A lot of new snow overnight, getting things ready for the opening of all the areas today. Most lifts are running, so I will move that information down the page as soon as we do see things in full mode. There was a bit of ice at the base of the pack, and on the runs, yesterday, but hopefully that is now down in the pack at the resorts, and disappearing in the natural snow. And it's turning into a beautiful day, for those who like the bluebird rather than the low visibility and high rewards of storm skiing (you know where my preferences lie). Alright, it is nice to see where you going, and the scenery is a lot nicer when you can actually take it in. The Siberian winds are still blowing in off the coast, so there is the chance that we might have more snow during the day. Something for everyone.... The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning to you all and Merry Christmas. Living in Japan for a long time, Christmas has gradually lost some of the meaning it once had for me, but it feels weirder than usual this year. There's usually various events for Christmas with, for example, Santa skiing on the slopes and giving presents to kids and stuff like that, but I don't seem to be able to find that kind of information this year. It might well be happening to some degree, but it's not being shouted about as usual. That's my observation, anyway. We had to put up with some rain yesterday I'm afraid. Booooo. Never welcome once the snow starts and always a worry when the temperatures get milder, but we can't do much about it. The better news is that there is 7cm of fresh snowfall from overnight here at base village level as of 8am, and it definitely feels colder too. Not a thick layer of fresh then on top of what we had yesterday, but it should be building up. It is snowing quite nicely at the moment and we should now be getting back to sustained colder conditions and consistent snowfall. Not much of the mountain can be seen as I write this and it looks like visibility is going to be rather limited this morning. Wherever you are in the world, and whether Christmas means much to you or not so much, best wishes to you all. Moiwa Base: -5℃, light winds, 5cm new snow from 3am. We are currently under the influence of a weak typical winter weather pattern, cornices and snowdrifts slowly developing over 800m. There is only a little new snow on the 23rd Dec layer, however snowdrifts growth is up to 40cm. From observation and data the general avalanche risk is low. A weak NW wind is blowing at the Hirafu ridgeline (1200m). Light winds have reset Mikaeri leeward slope. Snow is good. Below 600m bushes are still thick and the creeks are not covered. Beware hidden stumps and creeks off piste. Broken ribs are a season ender. The groomers are in good condition but visibility is bad and its hard to see the contours. Be careful going too fast and hitting something. Only Gate 6 is open at the moment but all gates are expected to open before New Year. Powder will be OK today. Don't over estimate your skills, make cautious decisions . Wear your helmet and beacon. For those of you who celebrate it, do have a wondrous time wherever you are and in spite of any restrictions there may be where you live. I went to bed a bit alarmed at the light rain which was falling at base, however, woke up thankfully to 2cm of new snow. It's back to being misty higher up and feels cold. It should also be snowing lightly on and off today. The Shobanuma lift (20) opened yesterday so you can use the Renraku course from Utopia over to Paradise and the Katakai lift (16) without having to use the ropeway to the top. It is not clear if the Onsen No.4 Quad (37) is running today. It was yesterday afternoon. Enjoy a White Christmas. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Merry Christmas. As my Niseko colleague said this morning, it kind of feels different this year, but the world goes on and I did spot Santa just before. I think he was going over to have a word with his bright green vegetable friend, our friend Naski. May I add he was wearing a mask. Yesterday was as expected a mild day with sunny skies in the morning. A fine day to be out on the mountain. (I am hearing that there was some rain overnight in the region though I didn't hear it myself and) I am glad to report that it is snowing now. The resort is reporting 6-8cm of it, there's a dusting on Naski's head right now and we are forecast snow today and into tomorrow. It's colder, but not very cold for the moment. Will be interesting to see how much we get this time. And I'll let you know! The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Hello from Shiga Kogen and... Happy Christmas. I was just over at Okushiga and the snow was coming down at a good rate. We are expecting snow today and potentially quite heavy overnight tonight. A contrast to the clearer weather and mild of yesterday. More lifts are moving this morning. I notice the Number 1 Gondola at Yakebitaiyama is open from today and most of the ski areas are showing a status of 'mostly open'. 'Fully open' areas at Yokoteyama, Shibutoge, Kumanoyu, Bunadaira and Tannenomori Okojo. All but Terakoya, Giant, Ichinokami and Hasuike areas are now at least part open. Perhaps they will open up from tomorrow?
