Another day when it looked like we should be overwhelmed by snow, but a funny wind pattern between the Noto Peninsula and Sado Island caused a little counterclockwise circulation of wind. While the coastal areas looked like they got pounded (I enjoy watching the live camera feeds on our local cable station at these times), we got just a bit of fresh overnight. The roadsign down on Route 18 also noted a heavy snow alert (not just a warning), so it could be interesting today. I will be heading up the mountain to do a little check of the natural conditions, and will report anything I find! But good conditions at the moment for onpiste, too. Good and cold all night long, so excellent snow conditions. I did hear from a local that the Myoko Skycable gondola at Kanko may not be operating on weekdays. Will let you know more on that, too. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Lots of snow overnight and windy conditions too, as expected. I have 25cm of snow measured up this morning. Interesting to see how the ski areas are reporting 10-20cm across the mountain this morning, which seems low. Wind is affecting some lift operations at the start of the day. As of 8:30am it seems that the Niseko Annupuri Gondola and top lifts at Hirafu, Village and Annupuri are on hold. Perhaps things will calm down later on enabling them to open. Limited visibility earlier on has actually quickly eased up and there are now increasing hints of blue sky appearing now. It feel like there are some quickly changing conditions outside this morning. Even if it clears, though, snow clouds probably won't be far away. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Coastal Data. Cape Benkei:WNW13m/s(22m/s at 3am). Cape Kamui: WNW15m/s, 1000hPa, wave 3.2m. Annupuri 1100m: -16.1℃, WNW10.5m/s Kutchan Town: -8.1℃,SW5.5m/s, snow depth 148cm, 1001.6hPa. Moiwa base: -12, 30cm snowfall in last 12hrs, blizzard, poor visibility. Following the passing of a low pressure system the mountain is in a savage blizzard, with a large amount of snowfall at the base and higher up on the mountain. Above 1100m at 5am blizzard conditions with winds 30-35m/s. Snow is heavy and wind blow and will easily fracture. The avalanche risk on open steep slopes (>30deg) at all elevations is high, fracturing on Jan 7 layer. Above 1100m in Kozan no Sawa ahard slab developed during the NE wind yesterday is under new snow and extremely dangerous. Also areas which drop into creeks (with knolls) like Owasa cornice face, Mikaeri and Goshiki and Higashi One the avalanche risk is high. Until the snowdrifts stabilise do not stimulate these slopes. The avalanche risk on surrounding mountains is high today. Avalanches will easily occur even in tree zones. On Nitonupuri and Shiribetsu Dake take extreme care. Even in the ski areas it is best not to get into any steep creek terrain. Gate openings yet to be determined. Please respect the patrol's decisions. Winds have dropped today and all lifts which are supposed to be running are - the Zao Ropeway 2nd stage shut mid-morning yesterday. So, a good day for powder hounds but viz a bit tricky. Note that the middle of 3 side Chuo slopes is not being groomed so if you do not like powder, don't get stuck there. It is cold with double-digits from mid-level up. Enjoy, but I think it is a frequent hot-drink break day. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. Is it just me, or we didn't get either as much snow or strong winds as we were told might happen overnight? Still, there's a very good 40cm or so being reported from Hikage up to Yamabiko, with almost all of that coming overnight. So that is nothing to complain about and a very nice new layer out there. Light snow for the moment and doesn't feel particularly windy either. How the 'state of emergency' that has been announced for Tokyo and surrounding prefectures for the next month affects Nozawa and other ski areas remains to be seen. Hopefully the worst of it will be that less people will be able to get themselves here. Which obviously is not good in itself for the ski area and the village... we shall see. Whatever your circumstance and wherever you are, I say let's stick to the rules and advice and do what we can to get through all this as quickly as possible. Not so much of a wind and while we have got 30cm or so of fresh snowfall overnight visibility is decent and things seem relatively calm. That goes for the amount of people around as well... You might have noticed the news from Tokyo, Kanagawa, Saitama and Chiba --- the state of emergency because of covid-19 will surely affect the number of people who will visit gives us all a complicated mix of sadness, worry, etc. With the snow as it is this season the people who are here are finding themselves able to enjoy a real treat; perhaps feeling somewhat guilty about it at the same time. Do take care everyone. Let's beat this. I refuse to be beaten and I'm going to do what I can to support the ski areas around here. I don't usually like handing over money for stuff, but in this case I feel I'm doing my bit. Not too crazy at base here, but enough to close the freeway down from Niigata City all the way here. Lots of blowing snow out there, but we didn't really see a lot of drifting and blowing this morning. The snow had pretty much stopped early in the morning, but it's coming down again nicely, accompanied by a light W/SW wind. I'm dragging myself away from the news from around the world this morning, trying to forget it and just think about nice things. Like fluffy snow. And nature. And cute animals. And toast. But anyway, I'll get to my duties... There is just a dusting of snow overnight (though I note the ski areas appear to be reporting a uniform 10cm) and it feels quite calm at the moment, but things are going to get revved up by the end of today with some potentially heavy snow along with some strong winds are forecast. It is another cold morning and due to get colder still. All lifts appear to be starting their day as planned this morning. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Coastal Data. Cape Benkei:E6m/s. The mountain got all tracked up yesterday, be careful today getting caught up in old tracks. Be careful falling, hitting trees, The snow is good on and off piste today. Snow conditions change everyday, just because it was good yesterday don't mean it will be good today. Always be cautious. From the snowfall transition and observation expect a Jan 7th layer in the snowpack. Yesterday over 500 people went out of bounds with no accidents reported. Everyone - thank you. Only about 50% of people are wearing helmets and beacons. Those people not wearing them please start, they can save your life. Be careful of a sudden change in weather. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Joy! Sufficient snow to cover up the grooming so floating this morning. We're back to foggy conditions again after a splendid day yesterday. Clouds started to come in toward the end of the afternoon and only light snow fell. Today, however, we're in for more snow and high winds (which should create interesting drifts). Visibility is a bit in the twilight zone so mixed. Not as cold as yesterday with way fewer people.
