- Madarao Now: Sunday 17th January 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Madarao region of Nagano New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 536cm Weather overview Cloud, light snow Wind Light Temperature - Visibility Fair Posted on Sunday 17th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Good morning. A mix of wet kind of stuff going on yesterday that happily ended up with some nice snow falling and this morning there's 10+cm of snow to report to you, so the mountain has a layer of fresh to enjoy and the trees are all looking white again. It's a cloudy kind of morning with light snow trying to fall... though we probably can't expect much in terms of cm. Perhaps tomorrow night into Tuesday for the next decent delivery. (With sun likely in the day tomorrow). Definitely a bit colder this morning. For us, that is of course a good thing. - Hakuba Now: Sunday 17th January 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 5cm Snowfall at base this season 259cm Posted on Sunday 17th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . A snowy morning and trees on the mountains are looking nice and white, though there's a misty cloudy feel going on. 40cm is being reported by Goryu on the upper areas (via official Hakuba Valley sources) and that is more than other areas are reporting. Happo are reporting up to 30cm on their upper areas with Cortina going with 10-15cm. So it looks like the ski areas to the south got more overnight. Sounds like it might be worth investigating! Some light snow forecast for today and the next heavier snowfall likely tomorrow night. We might get lucky and get some clear skies tomorrow morning before that snow. ----- Hakuba Happo-one Reported snowfall: - Kurobishi: 30cm - Usagidaira: 27cm - Nakiyama: 0cm (?) - Niseko Now: Saturday 16th January 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 6cm Snowfall at base this season 669cm Posted on Saturday 16th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here So I do have snow to report to you this morning. Due to the mild conditions at the moment it's kind of heavy and wet. Unfortunately at the start of the day today all of the peak lifts are on hold due to persistent windy conditions, as is the gondola at Niseko Village. It looks like all of the peak gates are going to be closed today due to 'treacherous conditions'. Hopefully those conditions will be improved soon with fresh snow. I'm going to sit it out. And have some toast. Hope you have a good Saturday. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Benkei cape 6:25am: WSW8m/s. Kamui cape: SSW26m/s, 995hPa, 1.9m waves. Hanazono 1000m: -3.9℃, SSW13.2m/s, Hanazono 720m: -4.6℃, S6.0m/s, Moiwa800m: -1.4℃, SSW7.0m/s, Annupuri 1100m: -3.6℃, SSW7.4m/s, Yu no sawa 1100m: -3.4℃, SSW13.8m/s, Mizuno no Sawa: -2.5℃, SW9.7m/s, Kutchan: +2.6℃, SW6.9m/s, 141cm snow depth, 999.6hPa. Moiwa base: -1℃, 20cm wet snowfall in 12h, good visibility. The temperature went up as a low-pressure system passed. A strong southerly wind blew above 800m elevation with thick fog and storms. Wind and snow is forecasted to pick up again as the wind shifts westerly and temperature drops. Wet and heavy snowdrifts have developed dramatically above 800m elevation This heavy snowpack is extremely unstable and would break with the slightest stimulation. The avalanche risk in the north-facing 30+° slopes above 750m is extreme today. The chairlifts might start running as the wind shifts and settles, but better stay away from open steep slopes above 650m elevation today. It’s a good day to stay in the tree-runs. The snow around 600m elevation forests haven’t been too affected by the wind and is not in bad shape. Sunlight is weak and it’s difficult to see the surface undulations. Heavy snow is also likely to catch the skis/board, so be careful not hitting trees. All peak gates will be shut today. Please follow the ski patrol's instructions. Treacherous conditions today, please be careful. ----- Planned ski area operations: Saturday 16th January 2021 The below information is manually checked each morning and believed to be correct at time of report. - Myoko Now: Friday 15th January 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 7cm Snowfall at base this season 726cm Posted on Friday 15th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It started out sunny yesterday; the winds started shifting to the north just after noon, the fog came in, and a bit of snow fell - interesting little columns, not your average, 6-sided, classic snowflakes. Not the best kind for powder skiing, but there's not much so it should be fun. Not much else going on around here, except that the trains will be running this afternoon. They've still been stuck in that huge snowfall that knocked out Joetsu City on the coast but largely missed Myoko. We'll get more this weekend, it seems. - Niseko Now: Friday 15th January 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this season 663cm Posted on Friday 15th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning once again from Niseko. The days whiz by and here we are in the middle of January... This morning I have measured 9cm of fresh snowfall. I am happy to report that it does not seem to be as windy this morning - definitely feels calmer, but I see that Niseko Village have their top lift noted as 'on hold' at the start of the day. The other top lifts are shown as set to open. There are mostly cloudy skies all around early on and we're generally expecting that for the day. Once again, some hints of light blue behind the clouds. Perhaps a little snow overnight night (would be good to keep the run of numbers going!) and then some colder conditions returning and more significant snow forecast for late weekend and early week. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Coastal Data. Cape Benkei:NW13m/s. Cape Kamui: WSW9m/s, 1024hPa, wave 1.9m. Hanazono 1000m: -13℃, ESE1.7m/s. Hanazono 720: -10.3℃, NW6.7m/s. Moiwa 800m: -9.7℃, NNW7.9m/s. Annupuri 1100m: -12.9℃, WNW5.3m/s. Moiwa base: -8, 10cm snowfall in last 12hrs, calm, good visibility. The atmospheric pressure gradient started to flatten out around midnight after 12hrs of winds above 25m/s. Around 11pm last night winds had dropped to 15m/s at 800m. 5-15cm of wind influenced small light crystal snow fell overnight, this should create a Jan15 layer. Over the last 24hrs there has been 150-200cm of cornice and snowdrift development, from tests it is hard, consolidated and has stabilised, however it collapses widely in tests with the grooming machines. From data and observation below 1000m the avalanche risk is falling however on cornice slopes around 1200m the risk remains high. Do not traverse knolls or open cornice slopes. Carelessly slope stimulation can trigger an avalanche. Do not wait in the valley bottoms, this is where the avalanche will run. Peak gates are expected to be open. Please respect the patrol’s decisions. Avalanche will happen regardless of the amount of snow. They only become accidents when people are involved. Focus on the avalanche conditions, not the amount of snow. Risks are always higher right after a blizzard. Be cautious. Is your beacon on? Have a good day. ----- Planned ski area operations: Friday 15th January 2021 The below information is manually checked each morning and believed to be correct at time of report. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 654cm Posted on Thursday 14th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Hello and good morning from Niseko. The consistent snowfall continues. This morning I am adding 15cm to my report. I was just looking back, the last report when I was not able to report fresh snowfall was on 23rd December! It isn't the best quality snow that we often expect here due to the milder conditions. But that is not a complaint - just an observation. Currently my thermometer outside says -1C. We need to be wary of wind again today and as yesterday we are starting the day with top lifts on hold; today including the top Hanazono lift as well. Should be calmer tomorrow and remaining mild. A return to really cold is due later weekend. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Coastal Data. Cape Benkei:NW20m/s. Cape Kamui: W18m/s, 1004hPa, wave 1.5m. Hanazono 1000m: -6.8℃, ESE2.6m/s. The weather quickly changed at 4am after a cold front passed through, cold wind and snow will persist above 1000m. From observation, there is 50cm of consolidated and stable snow drift development on top of the Jan 12 layer, then the new snow this morning on top of a Jan 13 layer. The snowfall transition indicates the avalanche risk rapidly rising through the day. As of 6am, above 1000m with winds and snow exceeding 20m/s the peak gates are expected to be closed, others are yet to be decided. Please respect the patrol's decisions. The avalanche risk on surrounding mountains will be the same as on Annupuri today. In the trees after 10am there is the risk of snowdrifts fracturing, be careful. Below 800m in the forests the snow is a bit heavy but good. Be careful losing visibility and falling into holes and cracks or hitting trees. There are always dangers on the mountain. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 639cm Posted on Wednesday 13th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here This morning I have measured 12cm of fresh snowfall since my report yesterday. It is mostly cloudy and light snow is falling but there are also shades of blue around... clearing clouds? So the snow is continuing to be consistent but it is noticeably warmer this morning. Warm for us. Perhaps I should phrase it as milder or... not as mad cold. But it's definitely noticeable. I was just looking at various forecasts and they seem to show colder conditions again tomorrow, but another bit of warmer temps around Saturday. Wind is something I haven't had to mention as much as I usually do (hurray!) but it might well be an issue over the next few (booo!). At the start of the day today all of the top lifts at Hirafu, Village and Annupuri are on hold, as are the Annupuri and Village gondola lifts. Changeable temperatures and wind aside, the pattern of consistent snowfall does not look like it is going to stop any time soon though. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Coastal Data. A low pressure system is bringing warm air into the area. There were strong winds and snow at midnight with rapid snow drift development above 800m. From observation, there is the possibility of a 50cm heavy surface slab avalanche on open steep slopes of more than 30deg, fracturing on the Jan 12 layer where frost has formed due to the temperature change. The SE wind overnight has caused cornices to be unstable and easily collapse. Heavy fog is persistent above 600m. Coastal data suggests the wind will swing to a west or north westerly direction, expect wind and snow to increase on the mountain. Best to stay close by the groomers today. The trees are covered in rime and are calm. Gate openings yet to be decided. Please follow the patrol’s instructions. - Zao Now: Tuesday 12th January 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 225cm Posted on Tuesday 12th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . After a fairly sunny day yesterday (which failed to dislodge the 2' of snow still on my roof because of the temperature), we're back to fog, a recurring pattern here. Still, no complaints if it keeps the snow good. It is snowing lightly but unlikely to be more than dusting ceasing during the day until the evening, but even then, no real amounts. Looks like the next real blue sky day will be on Friday. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 6cm Snowfall at base this season 719cm Posted on Tuesday 12th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow tapered off during the day yesterday, and the wind has swung around to the WSW. Neatly froze up the rotors in my "peter" (the local term for a snowthrower), which made for a long morning already: the roof of the house was in need of being cleared or we would be living in a dark cave (the roof clears itself, but the debris pile up along the side of the house). Anyway, got that done well enough to join you for the daily report. Which is: gray, warmer, bit of a breeze, no snow at the moment and a steady barometer. A few less lifts running (see the individual listings below), but all runs are pretty much accessible. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 451cm Posted on Tuesday 12th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . An earlier report today. It's a bit early for Naski actually, who isn't out yet... probably still having breakfast. (What do vegetables have for breakfast?) Anyway, enough silliness. Just a dusting yesterday and no new cm of snow reported overnight and we start the day today with cloudy skies. Might get a bit of snow overnight but tomorrow we should be getting some sunshine. The ski area announced yesterday that 1 member of staff had received a positive coronavirus test. As a result of that they are going to be keeping the Hikage gondola closed to day as they do disinfect the facility. All of the courses and other lifts are open as planned. That news was sad to hear that, of course, but let's all do the best we can to keep it under control. Fresh snowfall recorded by the resort (since yesterday morning): - Yamabiko (1407m): 2cm - Uenotaira (1230m): 2cm - Hikage (660m): 1cm - Nagasaka (615m): 1cm - Karasawa (563m): 0cm Nozawa Now 2020-2021 season Data as of Tuesday 12th January 2021 Total snowfall at base 451cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 22 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 56cm (17th December) November 2020 snowfall 0cm December 2020 snowfall 290cm reported on 12 days January 2021 snowfall 161cm reported on 10 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Nozawa Onsen. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Morning. The day after the long weekend and a 'normal' Tuesday. Things are probably going to be pretty quiet out there on weekdays (which of course will be a bonus for the folks who are able to be here and enjoy themselves). Tomorrow sunny skies are due and perhaps on Friday too. Maybe a bit of snow on Thursday and heavier snow due around Saturday. ----- Both Madarao and Tangram have cancelled plans for further night skiing this season due to the coronavirus related state of emergency situation in Tokyo and the surrounding prefectures. Tangram are also not going to be operating the Number 6 lift and closing the Number 1 lift at 4:00pm (rather than 4:15pm) on weekdays.
