It started out sunny yesterday; the winds started shifting to the north just after noon, the fog came in, and a bit of snow fell - interesting little columns, not your average, 6-sided, classic snowflakes. Not the best kind for powder skiing, but there's not much so it should be fun. Not much else going on around here, except that the trains will be running this afternoon. They've still been stuck in that huge snowfall that knocked out Joetsu City on the coast but largely missed Myoko. We'll get more this weekend, it seems. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning once again from Niseko. The days whiz by and here we are in the middle of January... This morning I have measured 9cm of fresh snowfall. I am happy to report that it does not seem to be as windy this morning - definitely feels calmer, but I see that Niseko Village have their top lift noted as 'on hold' at the start of the day. The other top lifts are shown as set to open. There are mostly cloudy skies all around early on and we're generally expecting that for the day. Once again, some hints of light blue behind the clouds. Perhaps a little snow overnight night (would be good to keep the run of numbers going!) and then some colder conditions returning and more significant snow forecast for late weekend and early week. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Coastal Data. Moiwa base: -8, 10cm snowfall in last 12hrs, calm, good visibility. The atmospheric pressure gradient started to flatten out around midnight after 12hrs of winds above 25m/s. Around 11pm last night winds had dropped to 15m/s at 800m. 5-15cm of wind influenced small light crystal snow fell overnight, this should create a Jan15 layer. Over the last 24hrs there has been 150-200cm of cornice and snowdrift development, from tests it is hard, consolidated and has stabilised, however it collapses widely in tests with the grooming machines. From data and observation below 1000m the avalanche risk is falling however on cornice slopes around 1200m the risk remains high. Do not traverse knolls or open cornice slopes. Carelessly slope stimulation can trigger an avalanche. Do not wait in the valley bottoms, this is where the avalanche will run. Peak gates are expected to be open. Please respect the patrol’s decisions. Avalanche will happen regardless of the amount of snow. They only become accidents when people are involved. Focus on the avalanche conditions, not the amount of snow. Risks are always higher right after a blizzard. Be cautious. Is your beacon on? The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Hello and good morning from Niseko. The consistent snowfall continues. This morning I am adding 15cm to my report. I was just looking back, the last report when I was not able to report fresh snowfall was on 23rd December! It isn't the best quality snow that we often expect here due to the milder conditions. But that is not a complaint - just an observation. Currently my thermometer outside says -1C. We need to be wary of wind again today and as yesterday we are starting the day with top lifts on hold; today including the top Hanazono lift as well. Should be calmer tomorrow and remaining mild. The weather quickly changed at 4am after a cold front passed through, cold wind and snow will persist above 1000m. From observation, there is 50cm of consolidated and stable snow drift development on top of the Jan 12 layer, then the new snow this morning on top of a Jan 13 layer. The snowfall transition indicates the avalanche risk rapidly rising through the day. As of 6am, above 1000m with winds and snow exceeding 20m/s the peak gates are expected to be closed, others are yet to be decided. Please respect the patrol's decisions. The avalanche risk on surrounding mountains will be the same as on Annupuri today. In the trees after 10am there is the risk of snowdrifts fracturing, be careful. Below 800m in the forests the snow is a bit heavy but good. Be careful losing visibility and falling into holes and cracks or hitting trees. There are always dangers on the mountain. A shame as there are still areas of bounce around ruined by not being able to see the ground before you. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here This morning I have measured 12cm of fresh snowfall since my report yesterday. It is mostly cloudy and light snow is falling but there are also shades of blue around... clearing clouds? So the snow is continuing to be consistent but it is noticeably warmer this morning. Warm for us. Perhaps I should phrase it as milder or... not as mad cold. But it's definitely noticeable. I was just looking at various forecasts and they seem to show colder conditions again tomorrow, but another bit of warmer temps around Saturday. Wind is something I haven't had to mention as much as I usually do (hurray!) but it might well be an issue over the next few (booo!). At the start of the day today all of the top lifts at Hirafu, Village and Annupuri are on hold, as are the Annupuri and Village gondola lifts. Changeable temperatures and wind aside, the pattern of consistent snowfall does not look like it is going to stop any time soon though. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Coastal Data. A low pressure system is bringing warm air into the area. There were strong winds and snow at midnight with rapid snow drift development above 800m. From observation, there is the possibility of a 50cm heavy surface slab avalanche on open steep slopes of more than 30deg, fracturing on the Jan 12 layer where frost has formed due to the temperature change. The SE wind overnight has caused cornices to be unstable and easily collapse. Heavy fog is persistent above 600m. Coastal data suggests the wind will swing to a west or north westerly direction, expect wind and snow to increase on the mountain. Best to stay close by the groomers today. The trees are covered in rime and are calm. Gate openings yet to be decided. Please follow the patrol’s instructions. After a fairly sunny day yesterday (which failed to dislodge the 2' of snow still on my roof because of the temperature), we're back to fog, a recurring pattern here. Still, no complaints if it keeps the snow good. It is snowing lightly but unlikely to be more than dusting ceasing during the day until the evening, but even then, no real amounts. Looks like the next real blue sky day will be on Friday. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow tapered off during the day yesterday, and the wind has swung around to the WSW. Neatly froze up the rotors in my "peter" (the local term for a snowthrower), which made for a long morning already: the roof of the house was in need of being cleared or we would be living in a dark cave (the roof clears itself, but the debris pile up along the side of the house). Anyway, got that done well enough to join you for the daily report. Which is: gray, warmer, bit of a breeze, no snow at the moment and a steady barometer. (What do vegetables have for breakfast?) Anyway, enough silliness. Just a dusting yesterday and no new cm of snow reported overnight and we start the day today with cloudy skies. Might get a bit of snow overnight but tomorrow we should be getting some sunshine. The ski area announced yesterday that 1 member of staff had received a positive coronavirus test. As a result of that they are going to be keeping the Hikage gondola closed to day as they do disinfect the facility. All of the courses and other lifts are open as planned. That news was sad to hear that, of course, but let's all do the best we can to keep it under control. The only snowfall numbers being reported by ski areas this morning is 10cm from the upper area of Tsugaike and 1-3cm by Happo-one. (Oh yes, I just saw that Happo-one is saying 4cm at Nakiyama Snowland area). There is a good chance of sunshine tomorrow with the next decent snowfall due Saturday. There is a hint of light blue up there in some directions, though we're not forecast clearer skies. This morning there's more snow to report since yesterday, 12cm, and it continues to be cold. Looking ahead the forecast is pretty much more of the same. More snow. Continued cold. I almost want it to change just so I can say more! ;) Not currently sure why but: the Jumbo Number 3 lift at Niseko Annupuri is closed and the top lift at Niseko Village is on hold at the start of the day. ----- Niseko Avalanche Report Coastal Data 6am. In front of the approaching low pressure system there is very little pressure gradient, the mountains and seas are calm. From the mountain base up to 1200m 10cm of light crystal snow has fallen, with minor cornice and snowdrift development. The general avalanche risk is low. Yesterday’s tracks are sparse but still visible. The new snow should make for smooth and easy riding. All gates are expected to be open. Please listen to the patrol's advice and be prepared before going out of bounds. As the low pressure approaches temperatures will rise and the wind will pick up. From observation the current snow surface will form a Jan 12 weak layer under the new snow due to the temperature gradient. Be careful of a change in weather and snowfall. The groomers are all in good shape, we appreciate the grooming operators hard work every night. Helmets are not a fashion item, they protect you from lethal force. Please wear one. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It is another very clear morning in Furano. There may be a snow front come through around midday, so best to get out and enjoy the blue sky early on. Overnight there has been another light dusting of snow. The resort has stopped night skiing on the Kitanomine side, but it will continue to operate on the Furano Zone using the Prince Romance lift.
