- Zao Now: Wednesday 24th February 2021
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 375cm Posted on Wednesday 24th February 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . A token amount of snow last night but enough to make the roof-tops and trees look like the traditional winter resort. Rather difficult to predict what the day will bring as it started off with sunny spells but the fog and mist has now come so probably on and off during the day, including the very light snow falling currently. There are winds about, but again, on and off lower down. Higher up they will be quite strong and indeed the Zao Ropeway 2nd stage is not open today. I understand that this is a combination of strong winds along with the ice build-up they have caused. Ground-wise, it will not be much better than yesterday albeit the token snow helps but may also be a curse as it hides the ice underneath. It is also cold (about -9C at base) and, with the wind chill, cover up those exposed areas. All lifts scheduled to be operating apart from: - Kokutai pair - Ryuzan pair - Karamatsu pair - Paradise Number 3 pair All areas open apart from: - Ryuzan - Kotan Official snow depths (as reported by the ski area): - Summit area: 150cm - Paradise area: 180cm - Chuo area: 180cm - Utopia area: 180cm - Uwanodai area: 135cm - Omori area: 100cm - Kurohime: 180cm Zao Now 2020-2021 season Data as of Wednesday 24th February 2021 Total snowfall at base 375cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 47 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 24cm (on 30th January) November 2020 snowfall 0cm December 2020 snowfall 142cm observed on 15 days January 2021 snowfall 146cm observed on 20 days February 2021 snowfall 87cm observed on 12 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Zao Onsen. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Snow, and a lot of blowing and drifting. I think my spot for the depth of snow is pretty accurate, though; things were thigh-deep at my house, which gets the north wind (and buries my car!), but not so much at the secret base location... just to add a touch of mystery. Looks like this is the last day for snow; at least it will stay a bit cold before another warm spell kicks in. Sorry, I'm a little early today, so some resorts have not updated yet. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. A good layer of fresh snow on the slopes this morning. The resort is reporting 15-21cm of snow overnight since yesterday afternoon. There's still a lot of cloud about this morning but over towards Madarao there's blue skies. It feels like we might get some of that, there are hints of brighter skies as the earlier snow has eased off. A high chance of clearer weather tomorrow but unlike the weekend we just had it will hopefully be keeping colder even with some sun. Beyond tomorrow, perhaps some snow on Friday but back to sun over the weekend again. All a bit up and down at the moment, what often happens rumblings of a changing of the seasons... Let me just add that Nozawa plans to be open until 9th May. So we got well over 2 months left! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Another day where we had light snow throughout the day, but not the heavy wind and snow that hit the coast. It was a perfectly blue sky early this morning, with an orange top of Mt. Myoko right at sunrise, but the clouds have since moved in. It's actually pretty bright and pleasant, though; nice day to be at the resorts. Still a little sketchy outside the resorts, with some pretty good sluffing reported on steep slopes, and even one small human-triggered slab avalanche reported being set off on rolling slopes on the lower north side of Mt. Maeyama, just in front of Mt. Myoko. So good to be cautious (nice day to practice those turns on a groomed slope?).
