All of Kagura is completely closed and parts of Naeba are also closed. Other lifts affecting at various ski areas, including at Yuzawa Kogen, Iwappara, Ishiuchi and Maiko. Lower lifts are the more likely to be moving this morning for people happy to brave the current conditions. In new 'opening' news, the downhill course at GALA Yuzawa, Falcon, is now open. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 2nd January 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 11cm Snowfall at base this season 384cm Posted on Sunday 2nd January 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It is a beautiful morning. The sun is out and there is just a bit cloud around. 10cm of snow again by last night and just a dusting overnight. There might be some more snow overnight tonight though and then a day of snow due for Tuesday. ----- The BC Gate and top Number 5 pair lift at Kagura are not open yet, that opening has been delayed as they deal with all the snow. The connecting course between Kagura and Tashiro and downhill course are also closed today. The Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is not open yet and we'll let you know when that opens up. The main Central and Northern areas are both open. ----- With the heavy snow over the last week or so, we are now in the very happy position for ski areas to be pretty much fully open... or as open as they plan to be on each day, weather conditions permitting. There will be some exceptions to that and we will give mention to any significant news we find in each report. We'll do that up here in the main text. For the time being, the list below will be updated with official snow depths and any fresh snow that ski areas are reporting each morning. ----- All information is manually checked each morning and is subject to change. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Beautiful morning (in particular) yesterday, with clouds gradually starting to gather as the day went on. There were some spots of rain in places in the evening in some areas but thankfully we can quickly forget that as it quickly changed into snow and this morning Kagura are reporting 40cm of fresh. Other ski areas are reporting 10cm (Ishiuchi), 20cm (Yuzawa Kogen) and 30cm (Maiko) - our measurement for this report is 14cm of new snowfall since yesterday. For the day today we are expecting light snow at times - it's still snowing now - but just cloudy at others. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Sure I heard some rain very early morning, but looking out the window now it is actually snowing. And while we were expecting up to 20cm of snow, just a little on the ground. (Kagura is actually reporting 20cm). Just to the north of Yuzawa out in the Minamiuonuma valley it is actually still raining, though seems to be changing into sleet and hopefully should be snow very soon. So it's a curious early morning, but we should be getting snow through the day today and into tomorrow and temps are set to drop. It is also forecast to be windy and due to that GALA Yuzawa is going to be closed for the day. The Tashiro Area of Kagura is also closed, as is the main Kagura quad but you can get up there via Mitsumata. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There was some heavy snow falling at times during the day yesterday and 22cm of snowfall measured by 6pm. That was cleared and there's another 26cm on the same spot this morning, giving us a total for the report of 48cm. And counting as it's still snowing. Here's what ski areas are reporting: Maiko Snow Resort: 30-50cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 20cm (but that is just from overnight) Can't find any other specific numbers this morning. It's safe to say Kagura got a whole lot. Wind is still an issue this morning and Tashiro is again closed. The Prince Number 2 gondola and top area of Naeba are closed too, as is the Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway. As the day moves along things should be calmer and the snow will ease off. And then tomorrow... sun! The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There might well have been snow falling in central Tokyo yesterday during the day, but it was bright and sunny here at the same time. Yesterday remained cold and it was very cold overnight, and the snow has started up again this morning. There's 6cm of fresh to report so far down here. Kagura are reporting 20cm, Maiko is reporting 15cm and Ishiuchi is reporting 10cm. Unfortunately forecast windy conditions mean that Tashiro is again going to be closed for the day, with the Dragondola of course closed at Naeba, and Kagura is open up to the Number 1 Romance lift. The top area of Yuzawa Kogen is also closed this morning, though the lower area remains open. The tree run area in the top part of Maiko Snow Resort plans to be open from today. (Application required). We're expecting the snow clouds to be with us through the day and tonight, to be followed by clearer skies tomorrow. It's going to be fine and sunny. • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 8th January 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 14cm Snowfall at base this season 480cm Posted on Saturday 8th January 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Another 5cm of snow overnight after 9cm during the day, so 14cm to add to the report. Ski areas are reporting 10-15cm. Today is the start of a three day long weekend because Monday is a national holiday in Japan. It is usually one of the really busy times of the peak season, so we can expect ski areas to be busy, especially today and tomorrow. There was some light snow falling earlier on but it has stopped now and we are expecting the clouds to clear and the sun to appear. Possibly some light snow later tomorrow but nothing major so it should be a generally calm weekend. The good news from GALA Yuzawa is that part of the South Area is now open. That area normally offers some good ungroomed course areas. For now just the main Eliza course is available. Unfortunately, there's also some covid-19 news that needs to be reported. GALA Yuzawa have announced that one member of staff in the rental area has been confirmed as having it and as such they are making various changes for the weekend. As far as we can tell all of the ski lifts and courses should be open as normal; it's more of a staffing issue for related facilities, particularly the rental facility. Sigh. • Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 12th January 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 22cm Snowfall at base this season 502cm Posted on Wednesday 12th January 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. OK so we did get some rain yesterday, quite heavy at times too. Actually a bit surprised to notice last night how much some of the snow walls around town had got smaller over the last few days. But we can quickly look past that as the snow is back... but so is wind. First of all, 22cm of fresh snowfall measured and here's what the ski areas are reporting: Maiko: 30-50cm Kagura: 30cm Ishiuchi: 20cm Blowing winds mean that GALA Yuzawa is closed and only the Mitsumata Area of Kagura will be open today. The top areas of Maiko and Yuzawa Kogen are also closed, and part of Naeba is also affected. Other lifts at other ski areas might be affected. Lots of people will probably decide to sit this day out, as it's not very friendly out there. The snow - heavy at times - is set to continue through the day after tomorrow. Hopefully the wind might get more manageable... ----- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth: 230cm Ishiuchi Maruyama Reported snowfall (by the ski area): 20cm Official snow depth: 180cm Iwappara Official snow depth: 195cm Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth: 200cm Kagura Reported snowfall (by the ski area): 30cm Official snow depth: Top: 280cm Base: 200cm Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 195cm Maiko Snow Resort Reported snowfall (by the ski area): 30-50cm Official snow depth: 240cm (top) 160cm (lower) Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: 240cm (top) 170cm (base) Naeba Official snow depth: 200cm (top) 170cm (base) NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 195cm Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: 230cm (top) 150cm (base) Yuzawa Nakazato Official snow depth: 200cm Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 170cm Yuzawa Now 2021-2022 season Data as of Wednesday 12th January 2022 Total snowfall at base so far 502cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 25 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 76cm (28th December) November 2021 snowfall 10cm reported on 2 days December 2021 snowfall 311cm reported on 14 days January 2022 snowfall 181cm reported on 9 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Thursday 13th January 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 18cm Snowfall at base this season 520cm Posted on Thursday 13th January 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Measuring 18cm of fresh snowfall since the report yesterday and this is what ski areas are reporting this morning (especially the Kagura one): Kagura: 5cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 20cm Maiko Snow Resort: 10cm Perhaps the snow clouds didn't extend down south enough for Kagura to get their snow. It does indeed look like areas to the north of Yuzawa (in Minamiuonuma and Uonuma) got more snowfall this time round, and feels like we didn't get as much as we were told to expect. [Update: 35cm measured at a point between Ishiuchi and Joetsu Kokusai to the north of Yuzawa]. It is -2C and has been only snowing lightly in the region early morning, but we are still told to expect heavy(ier) snow later on and tomorrow over Yuzawa. Let's hope they are right. Anyway, it is calmer this morning and ski areas all seem to be back open again. Quite bright as of 8am and even some small bits of blue sky to see at times, though they surely will not last. The Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is not open this morning, perhaps temporarily close as they deal with snow. ----- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth: 220cm Ishiuchi Maruyama Reported snowfall (by the ski area): 20cm Official snow depth: 220cm Iwappara Official snow depth: 200cm Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth: 200cm Kagura Reported snowfall (by the ski area): 5cm Official snow depth: Top: 280cm Base: 200cm Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 195cm Maiko Snow Resort Reported snowfall (by the ski area): 10cm Official snow depth: 240cm (top) 170cm (lower) Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: 270cm (top) 170cm (base) Naeba Official snow depth: 200cm (top) 170cm (base) NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 205cm Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: 230cm (top) 150cm (base) Yuzawa Nakazato Official snow depth: 205cm Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 200cm Yuzawa Now 2021-2022 season Data as of Thursday 13th January 2022 Total snowfall at base so far 520cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 26 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 76cm (28th December) November 2021 snowfall 10cm reported on 2 days December 2021 snowfall 311cm reported on 14 days January 2022 snowfall 199cm reported on 10 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 14th January 2022

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 68cm Snowfall at base this season 588cm Posted on Friday 14th January 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Well, yesterday might not have been as much as we were expecting, but we sure got a lot of snow this morning. Yesterday evening 32cm of snow was moved off our measuring point. This morning there's another 36cm on there. I make that a total of 68cm, so that's the number in the report for today. It's one of those mornings when you feel the ski areas are under-reporting snowfall. Don't want to scare people, though that's hard to understand. Anyway here are the numbers out there: Kagura: 60cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 30cm Maiko Snow Resort: 20cm (since last night?) It's also quite windy out there and unfortunately a few ski areas are not opening this morning: GALA Yuzawa is closed for the day. Only the Mitsumata Area of Kagura is open. Only the lower area of Yuzawa Kogen is open (the Ropeway is closed). Only the lower areas of Naeba are open (at the moment). This storm is set to have eased off by tomorrow. We might even end up with some sun. That will be good for the ski areas. ----- GALA Yuzawa Official snow depth: 240cm Ishiuchi Maruyama Reported snowfall (by the ski area): 30cm Official snow depth: 260cm Iwappara Official snow depth: 220cm Joetsu Kokusai Official snow depth: 250cm Kagura Reported snowfall (by the ski area): 60cm Official snow depth: Top: 300cm Base: 220cm Kandatsu Snow Resort Official snow depth: 235cm Maiko Snow Resort Reported snowfall (by the ski area): 20cm Official snow depth: 260cm (top) 190cm (lower) Muikamachi Hakkaisan Official snow depth: 310cm (top) 180cm (base) Naeba Official snow depth: 200cm (top) 170cm (base) NASPA Ski Garden Official snow depth: 255cm Yuzawa Kogen Official snow depth: 250cm (top) 180cm (base) Yuzawa Nakazato Official snow depth: 215cm Yuzawa Park Official snow depth: 240cm Yuzawa Now 2021-2022 season Data as of Friday 14th January 2022 Total snowfall at base so far 588cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 27 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 76cm (28th December) November 2021 snowfall 10cm reported on 2 days December 2021 snowfall 311cm reported on 14 days January 2022 snowfall 267cm reported on 11 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa.
