The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good news this morning. Nozawa-like snowfall since yesterday with the ski area, most of it coming overnight (5cm during the day yesterday). It's just great to see the ski area reporting 40-55cm of fresh snow on its slopes. I myself have measured 34cm. Visibility is certainly limited this morning but the snow should be worth it. Great. Let this be the start of lots more of the same. Ski area operations appear to be unchanged this morning, but I expect more to be opening up soon - especially if we get more snow during the day today as forecast. There may be some clearer skies tomorrow and the day after, particularly Wednesday. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . It is a cold morning and still quite windy on the mountains. (Happo-one always seems to be affected most by the wind and indeed this morning their top lifts are on hold again while other ski areas appear to be opening as planned). Cortina is reporting the most snow this morning with up to 40cm on upper areas since yesterday. Nice. There's more modest snowfall numbers coming in from other ski areas to the south of that most northerly ski area of the region. Numbers in the list below. Light snow was falling earlier on this morning but that has eased off now. I can even see some blue sky peeping through some clouds. We might get to see some sun over the next few days. It is windy and it has been blowing the snow around making it difficult to know what has exactly fallen. Cloud and light snow forecast for today but it will remain windy. Hopefully lifts will be able to move as planned, but I am thinking there is a chance that might not be the case. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Merry Christmas! Some more snow for Christmas morning. Just under 10cm of it here at base though it sounds like there is more higher up. It is a little colder, but it still feels relatively mild at the moment. It feels less windy too, though wind may still be an issue. At the start of the day, lifts seem to be opening as planned. I hear the (G11) Mizu no sawa area is opening from today at Niseko Village. A few more lifts are working this morning too, including the Jumbo Number 3 pair at Annupuri and the Ace Number 3 and Swinging Monkey at Hirafu. The Super and Furiko courses at Hirafu will be closed today (or 'from today') due to a 'confirmed avalanche hazard'. The ski area is saying that those areas are dangerous and should not be entered. We have a special guest in Niseko today. Santa will be shredding the Niseko slopes today, no doubt in the most gnarliest of fashion. In previous years, I have seen him both skiing and snowboarding, and often he takes time to give out chocolates to kids... both young and old ones! I'm not sure of the timing, but I think he checks out each of the ski areas during the day. Clearly, he can't be in more than one place at any one time!! Anyway, enough silliness. I hope you have a fine day. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -1℃, 10cm snow over last 12hrs, 40cm wet wind effected snow in 24hrs. Moiwa 800m: -3℃, 30cm snowfall, damp, wind rippled snowdrift development, good visibility. Annupuri 1000m: -5℃, 30cm snowfall, snowdrift development. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -6.7℃, NNE12.5m/s, snowdrift development. Coastal data: Benkei cape NNE16m/s, Kamui cape NE5m/s, 1002hPa, 3.3m waves. Warm air from the south continues to flow in. A NE wind and wet snow on the mountain. Above 800m significant continued snowdrift development from the easterly wind. From data, tests and observation the avalanche risk is high on cornice and snowdrift slopes above 800m. Although avalanches wont run very far, the debris will be heavy, hard and very difficult to extract you from. Beacons, shovels and probes are highly recommended. There was an avalanche with 1m facture face on Hirafu Super Course yesterday. Please be careful today. Below the 800m tree line, the forests have caught piles of wet wind effected snow. Watch for falling branches. Conditions will improve after the storm passes. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . A very Merry Christmas from Zao Onsen. Snowing again but light and those annoying pin pricks if your face is uncovered. Wind comes and goes but is likely to pick up later on. Viz-wise, the Chuo is ok, but upper Uwanodai is murky with that disconcerting feeling of lack of gravity when you can't quite see the ground. A shame as some great powder there. Much higher up and across to Hyakuman is likel to be be denser fog. Some lifts again are slow in opening e.g. the Mikaeri from Diamon to Chuo and the Katagai triple from Paradise to Chuo. Have fun and work up that appetite for those who celebrate. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Happy Christmas! And we have some fresh snow to celebrate it with. It's a fairly modest amount looking outside early on. The ski area reports 12-20cm overnight on top of 12-15cm up top during the day yesterday and a few cm down at base. If my sums are correct, that gives us 30+cm on the top areas since this time yesterday, so that sounds good. It doesn't feel particularly cold this morning but it should be snowing through the day and tomorrow too. Yes, that please. After a day closed due to wind yesterday, the ski area is open again this morning and there's a fair few people waiting for the gondola. The Paradise quad is up and running too this morning. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Snow continued to fall on and off through the day yesterday, but we didn't get a massive amount of new snow. The trees are all covered with snow on their north sides, reflecting the pretty good winds we had in the evening. The winds tapered off just in time for Christmas Eve fireworks at Akakura Kanko last night, and it was a pretty fun event. A really long fireworks display and free local sake, Niigata-exclusive beer and lots of snacks. Nice way to kick off the opening of a lot more lifts today. We can use more, of course, but snow is forecast for the coming days so the conditions will just keep on getting better. Several resorts are opening today, but as I complained about yesterday, it can be kind of tricky to tell exactly which lifts and runs will be open. I'd like to get these reports out to you before 8am, but, at least in the early season when things are just beginning to get going, that can be difficult. Oh, well, the main thing is that there's more snow today than yesterday, more is coming, and all the resorts are open. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Ho ho ho! Seasons greetings from Hakuba. This morning ski areas are reporting 10-15cm of fresh snowfall on their slopes to add to all the goodies we already have. Snow and wind during the day yesterday. It was really blowing it around at Hakuba 47 when I was there for a short while. Great to see some familiar faces from overseas, too, including a few friends here visiting. The weather might not have been the most friendly, but some fine snow to enjoy. It's cloudy now with light snow falling but quite bright in places. Wind is still an issue this morning and affecting lifts at Happo-one where only lower areas are open. The top section of the Tsugaike gondola is also on hold. Goryu/47 appear to be open as planned. Light snow is forecast, with perhaps some heavier snow tonight. Beyond that, the snow might ease off for a few days, and we might get to enjoy some sunshine. I am tentatively adding the reported new snowfall numbers to the list below. That list is, of course, checked and updated with each report. Hopefully, it will work out, and ski areas will be consistent with their reporting. I've put the number in red so that it stands out. Remember, I am only reporting what I find that is reported by the official websites (and official social media) of ski areas each morning. And some don't consistently post any new snowfall numbers. I will also certainly mention those snowfall numbers in the text of my reports here at the top... especially when they are Hakubatastic! Up to 12cm is reported by the ski area and I have 4cm to report from base. Hopefully there will be more during the day today and into tomorrow too. All lifts are go! The latest Niseko Now report can be found here It is snowing this Christmas Eve morning, but it hasn't got back to being as cold as we might have hoped, and there has been some more rain too. So as you might expect, the quality of the snow isn't back to being top-notch. (The Avalanche Report shows more snowfall than I have seen with my own eyes, so hopefully, there's a thicker layer out there on the ski runs). It's also windy, and that wind is affecting a bunch of lifts at the start of the day. At 8:30am only lower lifts are opening, and none at Hanazono. That may change, depending on how the weather might change this morning. We are expecting continued snowfall into early week and it remains to be seen just how pesky the wind will be... --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: +3℃, 15cm wet snow over last 12hrs. Moiwa 800m: -3℃, 20cm snowfall, poor visibility, blizzard conditions, snowdrift development. Annupuri 1000m: -4℃, 30cm snowfall, 1.5m snowdrift development, snow wind continues, poor visibility. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -4℃, 20cm snowfall, snow wind, poor visibility. Coastal data: Benkei cape E6m/s, Kamui cape ENE9m/s, 989hPa, 4.7m waves. A low pressure is bringing stormy conditions to the seas and mountains. Due to multiple low pressure zones, the wind will temporarily calm this morning, but after noon the NE snow wind will intensify and snowdrift development will rapidly increase. The snow below 800m is reset and conditions are not too bad. Be careful riding though, the snow is heavy, due to the winds and wet snow. Many accidents occur during snowstorms. Stay off open steep slopes open above the forest treeline until the weather improves. Take it easy and make a smart plan based on the weather. Conditions will get better. From observation and data evaluation, the avalanche risk is very high at all elevations and on all aspects. Do not go into the valley bottoms. Watch out for snow sliding off roofs. If you have to shovel a roof make sure you wear a rope.
