Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 12cm
Snowfall at base this season 72cm

Posted on Sunday 25th December 2022 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.

Snow continued to fall on and off through the day yesterday, but we didn't get a massive amount of new snow. The trees are all covered with snow on their north sides, reflecting the pretty good winds we had in the evening.

The winds tapered off just in time for Christmas Eve fireworks at Akakura Kanko last night, and it was a pretty fun event. A really long fireworks display and free local sake, Niigata-exclusive beer and lots of snacks. Nice way to kick off the opening of a lot more lifts today. We can use more, of course, but snow is forecast for the coming days so the conditions will just keep on getting better.

Several resorts are opening today, but as I complained about yesterday, it can be kind of tricky to tell exactly which lifts and runs will be open. I'd like to get these reports out to you before 8am, but, at least in the early season when things are just beginning to get going, that can be difficult. Oh, well, the main thing is that there's more snow today than yesterday, more is coming, and all the resorts are open.
