The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. You might have seen the update mid-morning yesterday as those early morning clear blue skies quickly made way for more snow. There were changeable conditions through the day with some periods of clearer skies mixed in with further snow. Not much in terms of cm yesterday and overnight another 13cm has being measured. It is still snowing and a cold morning. The snow should be easing off by tomorrow and maybe from around Tuesday we might get to enjoy some clearer skies with sunshine. The Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is part open today, with the Batman and Eliza courses open and the Waggonette pair lift operating. The Ropeway connecting GALA with Yuzawa Kogen is not operating, some kind of maintenance going on there. The top quad lift at Iwappara is also back up and running this morning. Other than that things seem to be opening as they have been. Should be excellent snow conditions all round, and very large amounts of it. It looks like areas of Niigata (and other prefectures) nearer the Japan Sea coast got some uncharacteristically heavy snow this last few days. Some snow higher up from mid morning yesterday with rain lower down which thankfully turned into snow later on... and this morning there is a layer of snow on the ground. Here's how much fresh snowfall ski areas are reporting this morning: - Kagura: 30cm - Maiko Snow Resort: 15cm - Ishiuchi Maruyama: 10cm 12cm has been measured at the measuring point. It is a cloudy morning and cloud is what we are expecting today, with the chance of some light snow here and there. Tomorrow currently the forecast is for clearer skies and some sun, and more snow due on Tuesday. ----- There will be some changes to operations at various ski areas from tomorrow. Yuzawa Park has been added today... GALA Yuzawa: The Sociable lift will be closed on weekdays for the time being, with slightly earlier closing times. These lift changes will not affect the ski runs that are open. Kagura: The Tashiro Area is closed 16th-17th January; all areas of Kagura will be closed from Monday 18th January until early February (no confirmed re-opening date) Joetsu Kokusai: The Atema and Osawa areas are currently closed for the time being (no confirmed re-opening date). The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. The mountains looked spectacular yesterday morning. We enjoyed clear blue skies and sunshine for the morning. Beautiful. Around lunchtime some clouds started to form and it was more of a generally cloudy picture before the end of the day. Overnight have had fresh snow and here is what is being reported by ski areas: Maiko Snow Resort: 20cm Iwappara: 15-25cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 10cm Just measured 19cm, so that is what goes on the report this morning. It is snowing still and it is windy... not crazy wind just now down in town, but enough to affect some lift operations and also visibility. In extreme contrast to yesterday morning, this morning it's hard to see much at all. The current conditions mean that the GALA Yuzawa resort is closed for the day today due. The upper areas of Yuzawa Kogen and Maiko Snow Resort are also closed, and there may well be some other lift disruption this morning. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. So yesterday snow was falling and it was quite windy, causing some ski areas and lifts to be closed for the day. It means that the snow was piling up in ways it hasn't for lots of this season, which has seen a curiously low amount of strong winds so far. Those places are back open this morning as it is a calmer picture. Still some light snow lingering in places early on, but less wind and visibility is improved. This is how much snow is being reported by ski areas: Ishiuchi Maruyama: 10cm Iwappara: 25cm Maiko Snow Resort: 0cm (though their official snow depth numbers have increased by 10cm) After clearing away 12cm yesterday evening, there's another 5cm at the measuring point this morning. So there should be a nice new layer of snow out there on the slopes. We are forecast a cloudy morning with the chance of clearer skies later in the day; it should remain cold through the day. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Well, we weren't able to avoid some rain for a time yesterday but it was clearer skies by evening. This morning it is an all round grey and cloudy start to the day with something of a damp feel with spots of rain in places. A cloudy day is what forecasts are saying the day. Perhaps some snow overnight if we are lucky (some more rain particularly in lower areas if we are not). So here we are at a weekend once again. Yuzawa Park is back up and running for the weekend, Iwappara is open from base to top, and some other ski lifts that were rested during this last week will be operating again. It will be interesting to see how many people are around this weekend. With Kagura, Naeba and Muikamachi Hakkaisan still closed and other ski areas scaled down in this last week, it looked like the ski areas that remained fully open were benefiting from that. Obviously with less choice available skiers were going to check them out and we had a few really great days of weather. Obviously we would so much prefer for everywhere to be fully open every day, as normal, and are really looking forward to hopefully being able to say that again soon. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. The weather this morning so far has been kind of confusing and rather changeable. There was some snow overnight, but not as much as we were expecting. There is a thin layer by the side of the roads and trees are looking frosted. Only Iwappara are reporting some fresh snow, they say 3-5cm - so we can probably expect perhaps 5cm+ in higher areas. Some strong noisy winds woke me up in the middle of the night. Unfortunately the GALA Yuzawa resort is going to be closed for the day due to the forecast strong winds and Yuzawa Kogen are saying that the Ropeway might be put on hold depending on the weather from now. So, hopefully there will be a good amount of fresh snow to report tomorrow morning. For a while there yesterday it felt like we might miss out on the heavy snow, but it started snowing mid to late morning and by evening there was just over 30cm of it to clear. And this morning there is an additional 26cm, giving us a total of 58cm since yesterday morning. Nice. Here is the amounts of snow that ski areas are reporting this morning: Ishiuchi Maruyama: 70cm Iwappara: 40-50cm Maiko Snow Resort: 40cm It's a shame that Kagura aren't reporting during their 'closed' period as there might be a very impressive number up there... So we got our thick later of fresh snow which is great news. Wind was an issue yesterday (and probably partly accounts for there being more/less fresh snow in different places) and while it is not too bad this morning some issues remain. GALA Yuzawa is planning on being fully open again this morning. NASPA Ski Garden will have all their lifts operating this morning (they originally planned to have one quad rested). The Gondola and top area at Maiko Snow Resort are on hold at the start of the day due to wind conditions, and the gondola/6-seater lift at Ishiuchi Maruyama will be operating with gondola cabins only (handy feature, that!) Other than that, ski areas are saying that while there might be some slower lifts (due to the wind), they are otherwise going to be opening as planned this morning. The forecast is for snow through the day today, though we have very likely already seen the heaviest snow for this particular snow storm. The snow clouds should remain over the region into tomorrow and then much clearer skies are due on Monday. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday while it was snowing for a large part towards the end of the day there were some clearer skies. Back to snow overnight though and this this morning Maiko Snow Resort and Iwappara are reporting 10cm and Ishiuchi Maruyama are reporting 5cm ('since yesterday evening'), and we have measured 15cm of snowfall since the report yesterday morning. That brings our observed snowfall for the month of January to 355cm and the total for the season so far up to 808cm. Will take a closer look at those numbers sometime in the next few days. The snow clouds are due to ease off this morning, perhaps around lunchtime. Maybe some breaks in the cloud again this afternoon? We start the month with snow-loaded tree branches, lots of fresh snow everywhere and the sun shining down on us. It's a beautiful morning. There has been no fresh snow from overnight - though snow did continue snowing for longer than expected yesterday during the day time. Looking around town ski areas seemed to be quite busy too. It is very cold this morning too (well under zero) but we're due a real warm-up during the day with a high maybe as high as around 7 or 8C later this afternoon. (!) And it might rain overnight tonight, which seems really cruel of Nature after giving us all this lovely new fresh snow. Anyway, we'll see. This morning should be a great morning to be on the mountains. But... Unfortunately, forecast southerly winds for today means that GALA Yuzawa and the top area of Yuzawa Kogen are going to be closed for the day today. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Happily we can quickly erase the memory of rain yesterday morning because it turned into snow and by evening there was up to around 5cm on the ground. This morning that has increased to 20cm just measured now. It is still snowing and it probably will through the day (though there are hints are brighter skies at times). Might get some more snow tomorrow too. Regular snowfall... all good. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday we did get continued snowfall during the day, though there was only 5cm of fresh to measure by evening. Perhaps more higher up on the mountainsides. There is no fresh cm of snow to report from overnight. We start this morning with some beautiful clear blue skies and sunshine. It is a cold start and there is a bit of a southerly wind. The clear skies are not due to last though, with snow due to be falling again by lunchtime. It might get quite windy too. With the wind expected later on today, at Ishiuchi Maruyama just the gondola cabins are going to be on the Sunrise Express lift today (no 6-person chairs). There might also be some disruption to normal lift operations at other ski areas too, depending on weather conditions of course. Let's hope not. Snow is due for this afternoon and overnight tonight, perhaps clearing up during the morning tomorrow. Currently it looks like we should be enjoying some sunshine on Saturday. ----- There is no official word yet on what Naeba and Kagura plan to do in the coming weeks.
