Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata
New snowfall at base 20cm
Snowfall at base this seas 834cm
Posted on Wednesday 3rd February 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here.
Happily we can quickly erase the memory of rain yesterday morning because it turned into snow and by evening there was up to around 5cm on the ground. This morning that has increased to 20cm just measured now.
It is still snowing and it probably will through the day (though there are hints are brighter skies at times). Might get some more snow tomorrow too. Regular snowfall... all good.
Here's how much snowfall ski areas are reporting this morning:
Ishiuchi Maruyama: 20cm
Maiko Snow Resort: 15cm
Iwappara: 10-15cm
A quick shout-out to Iwappara, who recently have been reporting how much snow they get in a morning. Some people have sometimes asked why we only seem to mention new snowfall numbers from Maiko, Ishiuchi and Kagura (when they are open!) in these reports... that's because they are the only ones who regularly mention snowfall numbers every morning. We're more than happy to report as much information as is available each morning.
-----
You may well have heard but the Japanese government yesterday announced that the 'state of emergency' in Tokyo and some other areas will be extended to 7th March. It was originally planned until 7th February.
It remains to be seen how that will affect ski area operations. Will Kagura and Naeba remain closed, or will they re-open? Currently, no updated information is available.
We will of course be checking and updating information as we have it.
