- Myoko Now: Wednesday 11th January 2023
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 14cm Snowfall at base this season 352cm Posted on Wednesday 11th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Clear and cold today, after a nice storm that brought us about 50cm of solid, fresh snow (nice, but not super light). Happy to say that all the resorts have got reports up, although I am reporting a little later than usual. Or that I want, but it's the busy season! It will be very interesting to see what happens over the next few days as unseasonably warm weather rolls in. Very spring like, possibly, tomorrow and Friday. Then heavy snow again afterward? Watching the forecasts is pretty interesting this year.... (The ski area is reporting 43cm of snow in upper areas!) We start today with fine weather. There is cloud and clearer at times and that is what is expected, with temps possibly rising slightly above zero this afternoon. A chance of light rain - hopefully snow - tonight. We are still expecting temps to rise and get milder over the next several days. It might rain on Saturday. Not a great story to tell, but hopefully it will get colder again quickly after that. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 230cm Posted on Wednesday 11th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Yesterday was a bit wild out there at times. Strong winds and the falling snow being blown around. No more snow overnight and it's a contrast this morning once again. A cold start. While there is cloud around early on, we expect clearer skies today and tomorrow. Saturday still looks like the day to not choose, if you have choices, as it's still looking like it will be rainy and warm. There's snow beyond that though on Sunday and Monday, so early week should be good. Anyway, I'm going to make most of the sun today and tomorrow. Not too warm, please! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 205cm Posted on Tuesday 10th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . The anticipated snow fell so new powder all around. It continues to fall although very lightly and likely to last all day and through the night but not bringing a lot. The bad news is that it is hard to see it! I've had to keep amending this report as the visibility seems to be getting worse and lower. The top of Kurohime and Utopia is thick and windy. The ropeway up to the top is like travelling through a cloud and buffeted by wind. No vista views of the snow monsters today I think - only those directly below - just. A nightmare coming down in 1m viz, ice patches and sudden drift patches. Don't go up there! There is still plenty of powder lower down especially on the long stretch of the Omori where Viz is clear. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning from Shiga Kogen and we have some wild conditions at the start of the day. It's cold, it's snowing, it's windy and visibility is low. Kumanoyu reports 30cm of fresh snow this morning. The good thing is the fresh snow -- and it's great quality snow too. The less good is that various lifts are on hold at the start of the day, so only limited areas are available for those wanting to brave the weather. In contrast to what we have today, clear skies and sunshine are due tomorrow. It should be great. Then it is going to warm up (more than we would like) into Saturday, though colder conditions should be back from Sunday. All over the place!! - Niseko Now: Tuesday 10th January 2023
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 14cm Snowfall at base this season 472cm Posted on Tuesday 10th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Another 15cm or so of snowfall to report this morning since yesterday. It is snowing still as I put this report together, but it is again quite bright with a hint of light blue in places. (It feels like we might get to see some sun. Or maybe not!) Beyond today there will likely be several days of mostly clearer weather conditions and it is also due to get milder, especially on Friday. I heard on the news that it might get to almost 20C in Tokyo on Saturday. Obviously Tokyo is a long way from here, but it does look like Japan in general is going to be getting positively toasty for a few days late week. Up here it's set to get colder again from later Saturday. At least temporarily, I'm taking the 'new snowfall reported by ski area' numbers for the Niseko Village and Niseko Annupuri lists below the. They just don't seem to be updating that number (especially Village), even when there is clearly new snowfall across the mountain (like today). That is potentially confusing. As someone looking at these every day and wanting to report good information to you, it is somewhat frustrating. I'll continue to monitor that situation and may bring them back if/when they report. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -5C, 20cm new snow, mild blizzard. Moiwa 800m: -8.1C, WNW12.8m/s, 20cm snowfall, snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -11.1C, WNW8.1m/s, unstable snowdrift development. Mizuno no Sawa: -9.7C, N8.6m/s, Hanazono 1000m: -10.6C, NNE12.5m/s. Hanazono 3 Base: -8.1℃, N5.8m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape N15m/s, Kamui Cape N17m/s, 1013hPa, 2.8m waves. The isobars are tight and a strong N wind is up. At 600m in the trees, reset and snowdrifts from wind and blown snow. Around 800m snowdrift growth is continuing but still stable, above 1000m there is rapid accumulations of snow. From observation and tests the avalanche risk above 900m is high. On Back Bowl sidewall, the N wind has caused unstable wind slab to form. If we get an avalanche around 1000m here it will clean the valley out. Don't go into the valley bottom. Cornices are weak at all elevations and could easily collapse. Also on steep open leeward slopes, 40cm surface avalanches are likely to occur. To avoid avalanches, pay attention to how the snow falls. Accidents often occur during times of wind and snow. Blizzard snow is heavy, loose and slow. And also prone to deadly avalanches. Have a good day. --------------- Ski area information for Tuesday 10th January 2023 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 36cm Snowfall at base this season 338cm Posted on Tuesday 10th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Getting an early start on a snowy Tuesday. It was pretty warm yesterday, with some rain in the late afternoon/early evening so it was great to see it change over to a pretty steady fall of snow. We had 36cm when I measured earlier, and it keeps on falling so I think we'll break 40cm pretty easily. Colder today, but it is heavy, wet snow. It was windy during the night, but it's fairly quiet now, with a light wind from the north coming in. One good rumble of thunder very early in the morning (some of us have to get up early to move snow!) which is always interesting and a sign of heavy snowfall. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 24cm Snowfall at base this season 226cm Posted on Tuesday 10th January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. Lots of fresh snow, yes! First of all, the snowfall that ski areas are reporting this morning. Drum roll, please: Hakuba Happo-one: 50cm (Riesen), 35cm (Usagidaira), 20cm (Nakiyama) Hakuba Goryu: 40cm Hakuba Cortina: 40cm (top), 35cm (base) Hakuba 47: 30cm (top), 20cm (base) Nice numbers there. 40-50cm on mountain. And there's a good 20+cm around base areas too. I just love it when I can report good snowfall. The current (windy) conditions though mean that some lifts are affected. The top lifts are Happo-one aren't open at the start of the day and there is some disruption at Goryu/47 too. There may be more. I don't want to spoil the feel-good of this report, but the coming days needs to be mentioned. Tomorrow should be sunny and not too warm - and so an excellent day after all this snow. Beyond that it will be warming up to Saturday when we will probably get rained on as well as being warm.
