The latest Furano Now report can be found here . It is another beautiful morning with blue sky over the resort and the sun beaming down. The temperature is -15c but will top out at a warm -2c later in the day. Visibility is excellent and there are great views up the Furano valley. There is no wind at base. Snow conditions are excellent with a base depth of 110cm at base and 230cm at the peak. Looks like a clear bright morning so make the most of it as snow clouds are bound with what should be a decent fall overnight (so be aware that some lifts will be opening later than usual). While it is cold early morning, it appears that today is going to be warmer than it has been of late. Hopefully not too much of course, and temps might rise to around +4C during the day. It will get colder by tonight and all being well there will be more fresh snow to report tomorrow. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. Another fine delivery of fine fresh snow to report this morning. I was just over at Annupuri and I got the impression that there has been more snowfall over there than here close to Hirafu base, but it's still a good haul. I see the Avalanche Report is saying there is up to 40cm in places and Hirafu reports up to 30cm. Fantastic. Another demonstration of varying numbers, the Kutchan weather station east of the station and away from the ski areas of course, is recording 8cm over the last 24 hours. (Oh, and Niseko Village are reporting, you guessed it, 0cm. I promise not to mention that (much) again! Let's just say that there is fresh snow out there, it's nice and cold and conditions should be excellent. After earlier snowfall, there's even a bit of sun as I write this over (8:15am) at Hanazono. It probably won't last. (It hasn't @ 8:30am). Snow is expected on and off through until at least the weekend. I will do my usual look back at January and the season so far by the end of the week. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -9C, 30cm new snow and still falling. Moiwa 800m: -12.2C, W5.6m/s, 40cm new snow, poor visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -15.2C, WNW6.0m/s, 40cm new snow. Mizuno no Sawa: -13.8C, NNW3.7m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -15.0C, NNE2.8m/s. Hanazono#3: -12.0C, SSE0.7m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NW13m/s, Kamui Cape WNW12m/s, 1013hPa, 1.6m waves. Following an inflow of warm area, a typical winter type atmospheric pressure pattern developed with moderate NW winds above 1000m and slow snowdrift development. On the west side of the mountain a lot of snow has fallen with 50cm accumulated at the 800m elev Mikaeri Radio tower. Below 800m the snow in the trees is deep. Soft slabs have developed on Kozan no Sawa sidewall, Osawa cornice slope and HigashiOne cornice slope due to winds up to 15m/s and heavy snowfall. From observation, these slabs are not stable and will easily fracture on weak lines. Even if the winds drop and the lifts and gates can open, stay off open steep slopes above 1100m. There have been many accidents lately. More people means more accidents. Everyone needs to be careful to prevent accidents. There is no safety in this sport. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . There has been some snow overnight and the accumulation on the ground is 5cm in the ski village. While it is mostly cloudy there are some big breaks and the morning sun is hitting the resort. The temperature is -11c and the high will be -7c. There is no wind at base and visibility is good with just a little early morning fog present. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . More snow, and some lost people on the hill start the day in Myoko. A nice new layer of snow is making the season suddenly more normal. As in white and snow walled and cold and just what we like. There have been lots of avalanches and accidents, and Myoko got one of the latter when a group of international skiers went off into some pretty risky territory. Luckily they got themselves out in the middle of the night - even though, with steep, difficult terrain, darkness and deep, fresh snow, they probably would have been better digging into the snow, staying warm and waiting for morning light before moving or getting rescued. The Myoko backcountry is complex terrain! Lots of ridges and valleys to get lost in, so get a guide, don't just follow tracks, and really have a good plan and local knowledge rather than just heading out. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Lots of snow again since yesterday, mostly coming in from early afternoon through the night. The ski area is reporting some really varied numbers (see below) and the nearby JMA weather station clocked up 19cm over the last 24 hours. My measurement is 28cm. It is still snowing lightly this morning, but I can just about see the shape of the sun behind a cloud too from time to time. It might get clearer today. One thing is (surely for) sure... excellent snow conditions. There's some more heavy snow due tomorrow night, though the day is expected to start off early on with some sun. There seem to have been quite a few backcountry/off-limit area incidents over the last week or so - not only here in Nozawa, but other regions including Hakuba, Myoko and Niseko. With that milder period and then sudden heavy snowfall, perhaps the instability of snow and increased chances of these happening is to be expected. Take care out there everyone. It is not worth losing your life. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 26cm Snowfall at base this season 342cm Posted on Tuesday 31st January 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . We enjoyed some heavy snow at times during the day yesterday. Some strong winds came with it and was blowing it around too, but it was great to see those big flakes coming down at that rate. Early afternoon saw the most intense and visibility was very poor in places. It had mostly eased off by evening. Cortina reporting 37cm fresh snow at base since yesterday. Happo-one reporting 50cm up at Kurobishi (1680m). This morning there's a lot of cloud around but there's clearer skies above it. Check the sea of cloud photo from Happo-one below. It feels like the cloud will at least partly clear and indeed there is some sun shining down at base right now. More snow due tomorrow, possibly after a clear start. ----- When I posted the report yesterday, I had not yet heard about the terrible incident over in the backcountry at Tsugaike on Sunday afternoon. I believe it was on the east side of Hakuba Norikura-dake. From what I can gather, a number of people in a few groups got caught up in an avalanche over there with five people actually caught in the avalanche itself. Three escaped while two were missing. A search began yesterday morning, but unfortunately it seems that those two people have been found and have lost their lives. There had been a lot of snow over in that region in the days previous, and no doubt there were quite a few people excited about making their way into that popular area. It is of course very sad to hear such news and thoughts with family and friends. Perhaps we can take this very sobering event as a reminder of the dangers that are close-by in the mountains. Do take care everyone, especially if you are venturing out into the more adventurous areas. Be prepared - gear and mind - and be sure to go with someone with knowledge and experience. * I am not qualified to talk about avalanche details, so I won't. Update: This morning it has been widely reported that one of the people who lost their lives in the avalanche was a US freestyle skier and former ski halfpipe world champion. This morning it is fine with clear weather and snow forecast to start falling from the afternoon. All courses open. All lifts apart from the Number 2 gondola open. All tree run courses open apart from Extreme and Cascade. Just a little snowfall yesterday and this morning it is, once again, very cold with some sunshine and perhaps more coming as the morning progresses. Light snow might start up again though from around lunchtime. It might not get to be heavy snow, but consistent light to moderate seems likely on and off through the coming week. A bit of sun every now and again added to that and that sounds great to me. Lifts are opening as planned this morning. Let's Happy Monday. --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -12C, 2cm new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -13.3C, NE1.4m/s, trace new snow, good visibility. Annupuri 1100m: -16.0C, WSW2.0m/s, trace new snow, good visibility. Mizuno no Sawa: -15.1C, WSW1.4m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -15.5C, WSW1.1m/s. Hanazono#3: -12.4C, WSW3.1m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape SSW3m/s, Kamui Cape SW8m/s, 1011hPa, 1.2m waves. The sea and mountains are calm under a shallow atmospheric pressure gradient. From observation and data evaluation the general avalanche risk is low. Peak gates are expected to be open. Do not duck the ropes, use the gates. Multiple riders on the same slope or traversing cornice slopes can trigger avalanches. Creeks, gullies and valley bottoms become avalanche paths.
