Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 425cm Posted on Wednesday 8th April 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday was a fine day. Today will also be a fine day with sunny skies from early morning. It is going to be warming up to somewhere above 15C in town later on. There might be a bit of rain overnight but more sunshine is currently forecast for tomorrow. Big news from GALA Yuzawa that I didn't notice in time for my report yesterday - their original planned closing date was 6th May, but they have announced that they are going to be closing for the season this coming Sunday, 12th April. In their message they have mentioned the lower-than-usual snowfall through the season as well as rising temperatures and wind in March. They have been doing their best to keep things going in a satisfactory state for as long as possible but it's starting to get difficult. Hence the new closing date. So there are just 5 more days left to ski or board GALA Yuzawa this season. It will be interesting to see how the planned closing dates of Kagura might also be affected. Will keep an eye out for any information. Right now their original dates remain. On that note, I just noticed this from Kagura - they are asking people to refrain from talking while riding the Ropeway. You know why... --- GALA Yuzawa - The Gondola, Barouche, Phaeton, Coach and Victoria lifts are operating - All courses in the Central Area are open - The Broadway, Super Broadway and Swan courses and Snow Park are open in the Northern Area - The Southern Area and downhill course are closed - Official snow depth: 100cm - Planned closing date: 12th April Kagura - 18 of 23 courses open - 11 of 21 courses available - Official snow depth: 170cm - Planned closing dates: 6th May (Tashiro); 24th May (Mitsumata) ---- - All other ski resorts in the area are now closed for the season Yuzawa Now 2019-2020 season Data as of Wednesday 8th April 2020 Total snowfall at base so far 425cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 41 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 48cm (6th February) November 2019 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2019 snowfall 27cm reported on 7 days January 2020 snowfall 88cm reported on 10 days February 2020 snowfall 248cm reported on 14 days March 2020 snowfall 50cm reported on 9 days April 2020 snowfall 0cm Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 11th April 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 425cm Posted on Saturday 11th April 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. We didn't get much of a clear up yesterday. In fact, there were still spots of rain around in the evening... it was quite cold too. Kagura are even reporting 5cm of snow up there. It is supposed to be clearer today too but we are starting the day with quite a lot of cloud. Yesterday evening the local news was talking about the weather at the moment. They mentioned that temperatures are/will be 'lower than usual'. After a winter season of what seemed like constantly hearing the annoying 'higher than usual', I shouted very loudly at the TV on behalf of us all. That surely told them! Kagura are officially asking people from the regions of Japan that are under the current 'state of emergency' (Tokyo, Kanagawa, etc) --- to not come. That's a fair chunk of the normal guest list for Kagura, so it will be interesting to see how that turns out. If these potential visitors are good boys and girls, Kagura may be quieter than you would expect. Tomorrow is the last day of the winter season for GALA Yuzawa. Cloudy skies are forecast for tomorrow. --- GALA Yuzawa - The Gondola, Barouche, Phaeton, Coach and Victoria lifts are operating - All courses in the Central Area are open - The Broadway, Super Broadway and Swan courses and Snow Park are open in the Northern Area - The Southern Area and downhill course are closed - Official snow depth: 90cm - Planned closing date: 12th April Kagura - All main areas are open, via Mitsumata and Tashiro Ropeways bases - 19 of 23 courses open - 13 of 21 lifts operating - Official snow depth: 170cm - Planned closing dates: 6th May (Tashiro); 24th May (Mitsumata) ---- - All other ski resorts in the area are now closed for the season Yuzawa Now 2019-2020 season Data as of Saturday 11th April 2020 Total snowfall at base so far 425cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 41 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 48cm (6th February) November 2019 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2019 snowfall 27cm reported on 7 days January 2020 snowfall 88cm reported on 10 days February 2020 snowfall 248cm reported on 14 days March 2020 snowfall 50cm reported on 9 days April 2020 snowfall 0cm Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Kagura is still requesting folks from areas outside Niigata Prefecture (covered by the government emergency declaration) to refrain from 'unnecessary and urgent' visits. I'll just leave that there. Anyway, weather wise it is going to be a fine day with clear skies and sunshine. Starting off with a bit of spring-like hazy kind of feel. We will also get some warmth that we have been missing the last few days, closing in on 20C in town. Tomorrow probably won't be quite as warm and a mix of cloud and sun. Looks like there is increasing chance of rain over the weekend and early next week. --- Kagura - Most of Kagura remains open - Both Mitsumata and Tashiro Ropeways bases are operating - 19 of 23 courses open - 11 of 21 lifts open - Official snow depth: 170cm - Planned closing dates: 6th May (Tashiro); 24th May (Mitsumata) ---- - All other ski resorts in the area are now closed for the season. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. UPDATE Important update... TODAY (Friday 17th April) is going to be the last day of the season. Kagura have adjusted their plans again and now will not be open tomorrow and Sunday as mentioned in the report this morning. So that's it. Another hour or so and the ski season is officially over. We will post a final report tomorrow. --- ORIGINAL EARLY MORNING REPORT Good morning from Yuzawa. Yesterday Kagura announced that Sunday 19th April will be the last day of the season. The reason is, of course, coronavirus and the now extended government emergency declaration. There has been a lot of discussion and opinion locally (and beyond). An appropriate decision? Too late? Why Sunday and not immediately? etc, but I won't get into all of that. The decision has been made and that means that - bar any further announcements, of course - the ski season in Yuzawa officially ends at the end of Sunday. Today should be fine and sunny and there is a chance of rain at times over the weekend. I will post again tomorrow and then wrap things up on Sunday. --- Kagura - Most of Kagura remains open - Both Mitsumata and Tashiro Ropeways bases are operating - 19 of 23 courses open - 11 of 21 lifts open - Official snow depth: 170cm ---- - All other ski resorts in the area are now closed for the season Yuzawa Now 2019-2020 season Data as of Friday 17th April 2020 Total snowfall at base so far 425cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 41 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 48cm (6th February) November 2019 snowfall 12cm reported on 1 day December 2019 snowfall 27cm reported on 7 days January 2020 snowfall 88cm reported on 10 days February 2020 snowfall 248cm reported on 14 days March 2020 snowfall 50cm reported on 9 days April 2020 snowfall 0cm Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 18th April 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 425cm Posted on Saturday 18th April 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Yesterday ended up being the last day of the season for Kagura - and therefore the region. So that's it for 2019-2020. Covering the winter season through these reports is always a long (and tiring) process - usually every day from late November through early May. But for the most part, it is a lot of fun. That's because usually there is consistent snow falling and excellent snow conditions to enjoy. It's always really exciting to share the news. This season has definitely felt different (and that's before coronavirus). It really has felt like a challenge at times. Words like 'hope', 'mild', 'warm', 'warmer than usual' and 'rain' have had to be used way too much for our liking. Probably yours too! Locals and long-timers have been pretty shocked to see bare slopes around town in January and lower areas struggling to open through the season. It's just not what we expect - this is Snow Country! In recent years we have had seasons with less snow than average, but perhaps the big difference this year was that we didn't get that decent early base to build on. On top of that, having to use those words mentioned above so much has not helped. That's not to say that there was no fun to be had. Of course there have been good times. There were some times when we suddenly got a decent amount and enjoyed conditions more like we expect. And believe it or not, not everyone is here for deep. If you visited Yuzawa this winter, I hope you enjoyed good conditions when you were here. If you didn't get to enjoy the best of conditions, I hope that you still enjoyed other aspects of your visit - the town, the people, the food, etc. Looking towards the 2020-2021 winter season, I think everyone would be extremely happy to just get back to 'normal'. It has been said in other reports, but it is true: normal is good. Really good! Let's hope that the coronavirus situation can vastly improve come autumn and we can soon begin to hear brighter news. The tourism industry is certainly hurting at the moment, including in Yuzawa. It would make us so happy to be able to enjoy a positive build up and start to the next winter season. Followed by a classic Yuzawa winter with large walls of snow piled up by the side of the roads, digging out the car in a morning and the need to be shovelling snow regularly. That would be great. (Yes, even the shovelling snow bit!) In the meantime, thank you for reading the reports. Please take care, stay safe and see you later in the year. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Welcome back to the Yuzawa Now reports. After a spell of cold weather and snow sprinkles on the mountains, this week has been rather warm, especially yesterday. I remember saying that a lot throughout last winter; hopefully I'll be saying it much less this time round. It remains very mild this morning too, it should be somewhat colder tomorrow and we are expecting some rain. Not to worry, it is still very early. Kagura was, however, originally hoping to be able to open from tomorrow (21st November 2020)... and they have announced a delay. There's hardly any snow up there right now. Back soon... The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. It is a dry morning with quite a lot of cloud, though the sun is trying breaking through at times. We are expecting the chance of some rain later on with a high of around 9C. The forecast of some snow over the coming days appears to have been scaled back somewhat, but there is still a chance around Saturday especially higher up. Kagura remains on standby to open as soon as there is enough snow. --- The three month forecast was released yesterday and it certainly looks better for Niigata than last year. The headline is that it looks like we are forecast at least normal levels of snowfall through February, with January showing an increased chance of 'more than normal'. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday it was snowing on and off for a fair part of the day, though it wasn't the same kind of snowfall as it had been - less intense and just 4cm to report from it, plus a slight dusting overnight. This morning there was quite a lot of cloud around early on but it seems to be clearing up with increasing blue skies and the sun has appeared. It should be a fine day with milder temperatures. It might get up to around +5C in town today and tomorrow. By Friday we should be back to snow. It will be interesting to see how ski areas open up this week. There is still not confirmation yet on when the Tashiro Area of Kagura will open. Iwappara and NASPA Ski Garden are due to start their season from Thursday and then most of the others on Friday or Saturday. • Yuzawa Now: Monday 21st December 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 40cm Snowfall at base this season 376cm Posted on Monday 21st December 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Guess what? Yep, you guessed it. It's still snowing. There was a break yesterday morning for a short time when there was even some sunshine breaking through in places, but it got back to snow fairly quickly and there has been another thick layer overnight. Our measurement this morning: 40cm since 9am yesterday morning. That takes our total for the season to 376cm. 375cm of that over the last 7 days (!) The Kagura resort are reporting 70cm of snow since yesterday and this morning they have the Mitsumata Area open and just the Kagura Number 1 pair lift at Kagura. Both Maiko Snow Resort and Ishiuchi Maruyama are reporting 20cm since last night. (They're surely doing some rounding down there. When numbers get big, ski areas seem to get wary of actually scaring people off with 'too much snow'.) GALA Yuzawa now has an official snow depth of 300cm. This has been mentioned in other reports in the last few days but it is worth repeating. All this snow does not mean that all the ski areas are going to be fully open. They are still very much dealing with it all and there are safety issues to consider. Dealing with such large amounts of snow is actually a very serious business, especially when it all comes at once. Last year was 'not normal'... this sudden massive snow is the other extreme. With the snow due to ease off somewhat by the end of today and then a few days of clearer skies and calmer conditions, everyone should be getting on top of the situation fairly soon. First of all, it needs to ease off! Keep that in mind and if you plan to be here and if you venture out in all this snow... it's natural to be excited by all this, but keep that in check and take extra care out there. As of 9am it is still snowing and visibility is limited. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 20th December 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 51cm Snowfall at base this season 336cm Posted on Sunday 20th December 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. More relentless snowfall during the day yesterday and overnight. Kagura are reporting 80cm since yesterday. Both Maiko Snow Resort and Ishiuchi Maruyama are reporting 30cm of snowfall overnight. Since yesterday at 9am, 51cm was just checked at our measuring point. We kind of feel hesitant posting such large numbers, but that is what was there, so... The continued snowfall means that many people remain in that 'dealing with it' mode and that includes the ski areas that are open. For example, this morning only the Mitsumata area of Kagura is open due to the current weather conditions. The main Kagura area is closed. There is a huge amount of snow around everywhere you look, but that does not automatically mean that ski areas are all fully open. Not yet. It looks like while it is due to be snowing today and perhaps into tomorrow, there should be less of it. (At the time of writing it is actually a bit brighter in the area to the north of Yuzawa). For the first part of the week we should have a few days of clearer skies, some sunshine and milder conditions. That will give everyone time to get on top of the situation. This is just a guess but I would expect everywhere to be able to catch up and get the snow settled in and be able to be close to fully opening come the end of the week, in time for Christmas. Last season we recorded 425cm of snowfall in Yuzawa (town level) throughout the whole of the winter. That was of course very low for Yuzawa. Just this week, since Monday, we have already recorded 336cm. Crazy! When we have more time we'll take a closer look at the numbers, but you can always find the data below on this page or on the Snowfall Analysis page (tab at the top). ----- GALA Yuzawa Operating lifts: - Diligence Gondola - Barouche quad lift - Sociable quad lift - Coach pair lift - Phaeton pair lift - Victoria quad lift Courses open: - Central Area (all open except Edelweiss) - North Area (Broadway, Super Broadway & Swan open) Official snow depth: - 270cm Ishiuchi Maruyama Operating lifts: - Sunrise Express - Tyrol Triple - Kanko Number 3 Express Official snow depth: - Central: 270cm - Base: 200cm Joetsu Kokusai Open lifts & courses: - 7 lifts and 11 courses Official snow depth: - 220cm Kagura Operating lifts: - Mitsumata Ropeway - Mitsumata Number 1 quad lift - Mitsumata Number 2 romance pair lift Courses open: - Mitsumata Official snow depth: - Top: 260cm - Base: 200cm - The opening of Tashiro Area has been delayed Kandatsu Snow Resort Operating lifts: - A, B and C lifts Courses open: - Most courses open Official snow depth: - 250cm Naeba Operating lifts: - Number 4 high speed lift - Number 5 high speed lift - Number 4 romance lift Courses open: - Lower areas Official snow depth: - 120cm (top) - 100cm (base) Maiko Snow Resort Operating lifts: - Gondola - Okusoeji quad - Okusoeji pair Courses open: - 11 courses in top area and Nagamine area Official snow depth: - 250cm (top) Yuzawa Kogen Operating lifts: - Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway - Cosmos - Kogen Express Yuzawa Nakazato Operating lifts: - Number 2 romance lift - Number 3 romance lift Official snow depth: - 220cm Yuzawa Now 2020-2021 season Data as of Sunday 20th December 2020 Total snowfall at base so far 336cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 7 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 96cm (16th December) November 2020 snowfall 0cm December 2020 snowfall 336cm reported on 7 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa.
