The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Yesterday afternoon the ski area was reporting 50cm of snowfall during the day on the top Yamabiko area. Another 23cm this morning, so there has been another impressive amount of fresh snow delivered. Smaller numbers lower down the mountain, but we still got another 20+cm around base areas. There's a lot of cloud around at the start of the day but some breaks in it too with bits of blue sky and the sun visible at times. If forecasts are right, we will probably see more of that as the day goes on. Fine weather due tomorrow too, and it is a national holiday. So lots of fresh snow and some bright weather is due. Sounds good! Lots of people lined up for the gondola this morning, and who can blame them! The latest Niseko Now report can be found here This morning Hirafu and Hanazono are reporting up to 25cm of fresh snowfall over the last 24 hours, and the Avalanche Report has up to 40cm. I have measured 21cm at my measuring point near Hirafu base. Very nice. What's more, the wind that we put up with yesterday has calmed down somewhat - lifts should be open, gates may be delayed but hopefully open, and conditions should be excellent. No further words necessary! Oh yes.... blue skies and sunshine. Bit unexpected, perhaps, but most welcome! --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -8℃, light wind, 25cm snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -10.3℃, NNW2.3m/s, 30cm snowfall with large snowdrift development. Annupuri1100m: -14.2℃, NNE6.3m/s, 40cm snowfall, snowdrift development. Mizuno no sawa: -12.7℃, NNE7.3m/s. Hirafu Hanazono: -13.4℃, NE6.8m/s, 30cm snowfall. Hanazono#3: -11.0℃, NNE3.2m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape ENE11m/s, Kamui cape ESE2m/s, 1019hPa, 1.5m waves. The strong, 20+m/s, wind peaked around 6pm yesterday and started to calm down after, however 15m/s NE wind has persisted above 1000m elevation. 25cm of light crystal snow has blanketed the base, but yesterday’s high winds has made snowdrifts largely grow, 150cm or even deeper, and changed the terrain in some areas. The new snow seems relatively stable, however would widely break under snow-cat pressure test. The avalanche risk is high at the Backbowl, Annupuri bowl, Higashi-One cornice slopes during the morning. Extra caution is required. 60+cm thick avalanches running down beyond 500m distance could occur with skiing stimulation. Stay away from the gully bottoms where avalanches run through. Gates opening will be delayed, but eventually open. Ask the ski patrol some advice and gear up for the backcountry. Do not duck ropes. A large-scale slide is likely to occur in the Haru no Taki area due to slabs formed with radiant heating. Do not go there if you care about life. Cracks are hidden under the new snow. Buddy-up to avoid critical accidents. The snow in the treeruns is fantastic. Have you switched on your beacon? The sun is creeping slowly upwards, however, upper levels still have fog but able to see ahead of you except for some murkiness at Paradise, Utopia and upper Kurohime. Still, there should be sunny spells ahead. A good fall of snow last night and it continues very lightly so to no real effect. No more real snow until later on in the week and even then, nothing notable expected. Apparently heavy snow is expected on the Yamagata coast but not reaching here. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A lot of snow by this morning, pretty strong winds and whiteout conditions at moments.... a real Myoko winter day! It's actually colder now, a bit later in the morning (but with fresh info from all resorts!) than it was at 6 am. Yes, heavy snow means an early start around here (and I actually planned to get up at 5, but heard the snowplows around 3:30, stayed awake too long and fell back asleep). Most everything critical is done, anyway, but there's lots of snow on roofs and wind-built cornices that are going to have to come down. Finish one report, head out again! The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Woohoo! Some big snow numbers this morning. By 3pm yesterday, the ski area was reporting 3-15cm of new snowfall across the mountain. This morning they add another 40-70cm on top of that after heavy snowfall overnight. One of the biggest hauls of the season, I'd say. :) It has been snowing still this morning, but as I write this it has actually eased off. But it's due for the day, so the icons are snow on the report. There's a moderate north westerly wind, but not enough to affect lifts at the start of the day. Tomorrow there looks to be a good chance of clearer skies and sun. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . The most exciting headline this morning is 60+cm of snowfall reported from over at Hakuba Cortina. Other ski areas in Hakuba are also reporting good numbers from the mountains, mostly in the 20-30cm range. That brings the total snowfall reported by Cortina for the season to over 7m, and over 6m at Goryu (see the list below, updated daily). So that's great news and we should get some more today. It is snowing lightly as I write this report and visibility seems fairly decent too, perhaps limited in places higher up. And then tomorrow, some sunshine. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Another 10-15cm of snow since yesterday and as the ski areas open for the morning we have generally cloudy skies but with a hint of the sun trying to break through. As I feel I have said quite a lot recently, the snow clouds will probably not be far away. We are also host to some pesky wind on the mountains this morning. As of 8:30am, all of the top lifts are on hold, as are the gondola lifts at Hirafu, Village and Annupuri. That shiny new(er) gondola at Hanazono says boo to the wind and is open (though perhaps at a slower speed). ----- Following a comment I made last week about our fab snowfall consistency, a few people have asked if I have ever been skiing or snowboarding in other regions of Japan. Unfortunately, the answer is that while I have a fair bit of experience around Hokkaido over the years, I have only limited skiing experience in Honshu. And it was many years ago. But I would love to experience all the places I have heard about for so many years. SnowJapan makes it quite clear that they recommend not directly comparing the reports on the site. That is one reason why the (new site) system is not set up as some sort of 'competition' and each section is self contained. If you want to compare, the data is all there - in abundance and easily accessibly. I totally agree with that stance - it's not a competition. So many factors make up the ski experience, and snowfall is just one of those (though, of course, a very important one!) Some places get more snow than others. Some get less snow down to base. More snow doesn't necessarily mean better snow. Some regions have much steeper terrain than others. Etc, etc. And people like different stuff. I would like to spend some time in places like Hakuba, Myoko and Shiga Kogen, amongst others. There are just so many. I have heard lots of good things about those places, and it sounds like they offer a somewhat different experience to what I am used to here in Niseko. And that sounds good to me. Unfortunately, I'm pretty busy every morning throughout the winter doing something that requires me to be here in Niseko. And that makes a long winter trip to Honshu rather tricky. Maybe one day! --------------- Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -5C, 15cm wind affected snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -8.0C, 20cm snowfall with snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -10.9C, WNW9.5m/s, stormy, bad visibility and snowdrift development. Mizuno no Sawa: -9.4℃, NNW6.8C. Hirafu Hanazono: -10.8C, NNW3.8ms/, snowdrift development. Hanazono#3: -7.8C, NNW6.1m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape N20m/s, Kamui cape NNE14m/s, 1003hPa, 3.1m waves. The wind picked up during the night and the new snowdrifts in leeward slopes above 800m elevation are likely to slide from yesterday’s (Feb 19th) low-pressure snowfall layer. The wind died down before dawn, however picked up again around 7am making snowdrifts and cornices develop further. The avalanche risk is high in open steep slopes above the treeline and 800m elevation. Gates #2, 3 & 4 will be shut for the sake of all resort users. Other gates opening is not determined at this stage, please respect the ski patrol’s decisions. Do not cross boundary ropes. Many of the avalanche accidents are triggered by people skiing unstable slabs of snow. The reason why most accidents in Niseko occur during storms is because people ski wind-affected snow slabs during their unstable, structurally weak, development stage, and not necessarily because of prominent weak layer slides that are mostly seen under sunny weather. Pay attention to how the snow has been accumulating in the past. Most of the avalanches during winter occur in leeward slopes with heavy loads of snowdrift under high wind weather. This information is based on objective and mechanical facts and is issued for minimizing accidents in and around the Niseko area.
