- Hakuba Now: Wednesday 3rd May 2023
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 444cm Posted on Wednesday 3rd May 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Hakuba Goryu and Hakuba 47 have announced that Friday (5th May) will be their last day of the season, rather than Sunday 7th May. They are even saying that they might not make it that long... Obviously the snow situation is getting increasingly difficult, but poor forecast weather over the coming weekend possibly made the decision easier. They have done well to keep open this long. For the record, there has been no such announcement from Tsugaike (yet). For the next few days, we should enjoy clear skies and quite a lot of sunshine and warmth. --------------- ABLE Hakuba Goryu The Panorama run at Hakuba Goryu remains open. - Zao Now: Saturday 29th April 2023
Independent snow and weather reporting from the Zao region of Yamagata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 418cm Posted on Saturday 29th April 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Zao Now report can be found here . Hello on this first day of Golden Week. After some whispers and opinions about whether the ski area could remain open through Golden Week, I have confirmed news... it can't. The snow melt has been too quick, and unfortunately, in what seems like a rather sudden announcement, it has been confirmed that today will be the last day of the 2022-2023 season. Looking back at the season, 2022-2023 felt like a return to 'something-like-normal' after all of the major covid-related disruption of the previous several seasons. I don't know about visitor statistics, but there have definitely been many more people around this season - including a return of overseas visitors. That has been great to see. The story of the snow/snowfall can be followed through the daily archive reports. This last spring section of the season has felt very long, with very little fresh snow once we got into March. I am reading about many ski areas closing earlier than planned this year, so it seems to be an all-Japan thing. Hope you really enjoyed all that Zao has to offer if you visited. Anyway, with the ski area closing today, this is the last Zao Now report of the season. The reports will return as the 2023-2024 winter season approaches in November. See you then. And thanks for reading. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Hakuba region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 444cm Posted on Friday 28th April 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. Believe it or not, there was some fresh snowfall around on the mountains yesterday morning (while it was raining down at base). Hakuba 47 were reporting about 5cm. Hurray! :) On to today and it's a lovely morning in Hakuba and it is going to be warmer once again - temps will be rising above 20C later on. There's some news from the Happo-one ski area: it will be open for skiing/snowboarding until (hopefully) Sunday 30th April, which is a week earlier than planned. The remaining three ski areas that remain open still seem to be hoping to be able to remain open until Sunday 7th May... so we have just over one week left to go. There isn't much snow left, but there's enough to get some last turns in if you want to! Weekend weather? Forecasts show fine weather tomorrow during the day, with rain moving in overnight and on Sunday morning. Hopefully that won't last long and leave us with a mostly cloudy day. --------------- ABLE Hakuba Goryu The Panorama run at Hakuba Goryu remains open. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Geto Kogen region of Iwate New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1282cm Posted on Sunday 23rd April 2023 This is an archived report. The latest Geto Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning everyone. Today (Sunday 23rd April) is the last day of the season at Geto Kogen. It's sunny with some cloud. It felt like spring arrived early this year, but if you look at the stats the ski area still reported an impressive 1820cm of snowfall this season. It's hard to complain about that! After all the disruption due to covid, it has happily felt much more like a normal season this time round. And not only with local visitors, but people also started to come back from overseas too. No doubt that trend will continue next season. If you visited this season, I hope you loved it here. When on form, it is an amazing place! SnowJapan will be posting an end-of-season message after Golden Week (on all the Now reports). That's it from Geto Kogen for this season. All the archives and statistics are in place and can be accessed at any time. Thanks for reading. Take care and see you later in the year as the 2023-2024 season approaches. Hakuba 47 were reporting a temperature of 22C at 1450m (!). Will the ski areas be able to remain open until the end of Golden Week? We shall see. It's always interesting to see the huge efforts ski areas put into remaining open - perhaps some more than others. Otsukaresama, to everyone involved in the efforts. This morning is much cooler (though still 12C) and visibility is limited in many of the areas that remain open, even though it is clearer down at base. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here Good morning from Niseko. Fine and/but hazy probably best describes the weather this morning. It's certainly bright. More cloud and possibly some rain is due over the weekend. Let's hope we can keep the latter to a minimum. Some people asked if the ski areas will be able to open until the planned closing date of 7th May. No word yet from either of the two ski areas that remain open on that, and I'll let you know if and when there are any announcements. Snow has been melting from the lower area of Hanazono quite quickly now. There's also a big digger machine transporting gondola cabins to their resting place. (Presumably. I don't think it's a naughty thieving digger machine). --------------- Ski area information for Friday 14th April 2023 The below snow depth and snowfall numbers are manually checked each morning from official sources.
