I heard a few people say 'could have done with more of this in January'! Since yesterday Kagura have reported another 20cm and Maiko Snow Resort have reported 5cm, so for those higher areas that remain open conditions should actually be pretty good now. There is a lot of cloud around now but some blue sky and probably more as the morning progresses. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. OK, so just to recap. It was 22.8C a few days ago here. Heavy rain last night. And this morning, there's 10-15cm of fresh snowfall on the ground in town and the Kagura resort is reporting 25cm. And Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 35cm of fresh snow. Maiko, of course, brought their closing date forward by a week to today. It's interesting to note that they have not mentioned that today is their last day on their update this morning (...might they rethinking again...?) Hold on. Incoming. Kandatsu Snow Resort have once again changed their planned closing date. No, not to extend it. This time, they are pulling back from 5th April to Tuesday 31st March. I think I've got that right. I'll update you again if they change their mind again tomorrow. ;) Phew. What a season this has been... It's still snowing by the way. Should ease off sometime this morning. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. It continued snowing during the morning yesterday and eased off for the afternoon. We start this morning with lots of cloud around including low lying cloud. Visibility looks rather limited at the start of the day. We are expecting a return to sunshine and warmth tomorrow. --- Maiko Snow Resort and Muikamachi Hakkaisan finished up their winter season yesterday. I hope everyone there can take a bit of a well earned rest after a long season. Still feels fairly bright though and a few breaks in the cloud. We are expecting some rain though later on today and overnight - perhaps heavy at times. Hopefully that will mostly happen overnight. From today just Naeba, GALA Yuzawa and Kagura remain open. But... with some strong winds forecast, GALA Yuzawa is actually going to be closed for the day today. It was quite chilly yesterday and while there was some sun at times there was also some very light snow falling in places. On to today and there was a slight dusting of snow down to town areas this morning (gone in some places now, some rain has seen to that), but higher up Kagura are actually reporting 10cm of fresh snowfall this morning. Winds are forecast today though and the Tashiro Area of Kagura is closed and the Kagura Number 1 high speed lift is on hold. But Kagura is open via Mitsumata Ropeway. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday was a fine day. Today will also be a fine day with sunny skies from early morning. It is going to be warming up to somewhere above 15C in town later on. There might be a bit of rain overnight but more sunshine is currently forecast for tomorrow. Big news from GALA Yuzawa that I didn't notice in time for my report yesterday - their original planned closing date was 6th May, but they have announced that they are going to be closing for the season this coming Sunday, 12th April. In their message they have mentioned the lower-than-usual snowfall through the season as well as rising temperatures and wind in March. They have been doing their best to keep things going in a satisfactory state for as long as possible but it's starting to get difficult. Hence the new closing date. So there are just 5 more days left to ski or board GALA Yuzawa this season. It will be interesting to see how the planned closing dates of Kagura might also be affected. Will keep an eye out for any information. Right now their original dates remain. On that note, I just noticed this from Kagura - they are asking people to refrain from talking while riding the Ropeway. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. We didn't get much of a clear up yesterday. In fact, there were still spots of rain around in the evening... it was quite cold too. Kagura are even reporting 5cm of snow up there. It is supposed to be clearer today too but we are starting the day with quite a lot of cloud. Yesterday evening the local news was talking about the weather at the moment. They mentioned that temperatures are/will be 'lower than usual'. After a winter season of what seemed like constantly hearing the annoying 'higher than usual', I shouted very loudly at the TV on behalf of us all. That surely told them! Kagura are officially asking people from the regions of Japan that are under the current 'state of emergency' (Tokyo, Kanagawa, etc) --- to not come. That's a fair chunk of the normal guest list for Kagura, so it will be interesting to see how that turns out. If these potential visitors are good boys and girls, Kagura may be quieter than you would expect. Tomorrow is the last day of the winter season for GALA Yuzawa. It feels much calmer this morning. There is a lot of cloud around but some sun breaking through in places. Kagura is still requesting folks from areas outside Niigata Prefecture (covered by the government emergency declaration) to refrain from 'unnecessary and urgent' visits. I'll just leave that there. Anyway, weather wise it is going to be a fine day with clear skies and sunshine. Starting off with a bit of spring-like hazy kind of feel. We will also get some warmth that we have been missing the last few days, closing in on 20C in town. Tomorrow probably won't be quite as warm and a mix of cloud and sun. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. UPDATE Important update... TODAY (Friday 17th April) is going to be the last day of the season. Kagura have adjusted their plans again and now will not be open tomorrow and Sunday as mentioned in the report this morning. So that's it. Another hour or so and the ski season is officially over. We will post a final report tomorrow. --- ORIGINAL EARLY MORNING REPORT Good morning from Yuzawa. Yesterday Kagura announced that Sunday 19th April will be the last day of the season. The reason is, of course, coronavirus and the now extended government emergency declaration. There has been a lot of discussion and opinion locally (and beyond). An appropriate decision? Too late? Why Sunday and not immediately? etc, but I won't get into all of that. The decision has been made and that means that - bar any further announcements, of course - the ski season in Yuzawa officially ends at the end of Sunday. Today should be fine and sunny and there is a chance of rain at times over the weekend. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Yesterday ended up being the last day of the season for Kagura - and therefore the region. So that's it for 2019-2020. Covering the winter season through these reports is always a long (and tiring) process - usually every day from late November through early May. But for the most part, it is a lot of fun. That's because usually there is consistent snow falling and excellent snow conditions to enjoy. It's always really exciting to share the news. This season has definitely felt different (and that's before coronavirus). It really has felt like a challenge at times. Words like 'hope', 'mild', 'warm', 'warmer than usual' and 'rain' have had to be used way too much for our liking. Probably yours too! Locals and long-timers have been pretty shocked to see bare slopes around town in January and lower areas struggling to open through the season. It's just not what we expect - this is Snow Country! In recent years we have had seasons with less snow than average, but perhaps the big difference this year was that we didn't get that decent early base to build on. On top of that, having to use those words mentioned above so much has not helped. That's not to say that there was no fun to be had. Of course there have been good times. There were some times when we suddenly got a decent amount and enjoyed conditions more like we expect. And believe it or not, not everyone is here for deep. If you visited Yuzawa this winter, I hope you enjoyed good conditions when you were here. If you didn't get to enjoy the best of conditions, I hope that you still enjoyed other aspects of your visit - the town, the people, the food, etc. Looking towards the 2020-2021 winter season, I think everyone would be extremely happy to just get back to 'normal'. It has been said in other reports, but it is true: normal is good. Really good! Let's hope that the coronavirus situation can vastly improve come autumn and we can soon begin to hear brighter news. The tourism industry is certainly hurting at the moment, including in Yuzawa. It would make us so happy to be able to enjoy a positive build up and start to the next winter season. Followed by a classic Yuzawa winter with large walls of snow piled up by the side of the roads, digging out the car in a morning and the need to be shovelling snow regularly. That would be great.
