  • Myoko Now: Wednesday 10th January 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 298cm Posted on Wednesday 10th January 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Another morning that started with real, Myoko-style snow; big flakes coming down nice and steadily. Not a huge fall, and the forecast is that it will taper off around lunchtime, but nice to see. Nice to have the snow continuing, too (OK, one beautiful sunny day in there, but the condition on the hill is so much better than earlier). It was also fun to see real "snowflake" crystals during a snow check. Bigger arms on those little stars means more air, fluffy powder, white smoke (we really need a bit more to enjoy that, but it's the right idea). I'm also pleased to see that, on this slightly late-reporting day, that most of the resorts have updated information for you. Even better if they had that a little earlier, as you make your plans for the day, but step by step.... • Niseko Now: Wednesday 10th January 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 16cm Snowfall at base this season 519cm Posted on Wednesday 10th January 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I am pleased to report more fresh snow again this morning. This morning my measurement (24 hours since 8:30am yesterday) was 16cm. Very nice. Forecasts show consistent snowfall across the coming week too. It is a cold morning and visibility is varied but ranging from OK to poor depending on where you are. It seems windy out there and the Annupuri gondola isn't going to be open as scheduled because of that. The top Hirafu lift too and, I suppose, possibly more. Some fine person asked about the top Jumbo Number 4 pair lift at Niseko Annupuri, wondering why it is not yet open. It is a good question. As far as I can tell, up until a few days ago, the reason was 'not enough snow'. But after the last few days of heavy snow, the reason changed to that there is 'too much snow'. Doh! I imagine the ski area will be trying to open it as soon as they feel comfortable, and I have heard that it might be open by this weekend. But I don't know if that is the official thinking, and of course, the opening will, in the end, depend on weather and snow. Hopefully, pesky winds won't try to kick up a fuss. (Hey, I know I have mentioned wind in todays report, but I feel like I haven't had to talk much about pesky winds this season so far. That's a good thing, of course). ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 6am: -8C, 5cm/12h snowfall. Moiwa800m: -18.9C, NW9.5m/s, Snowdrifts 100-150cm in 12h, moderate visibility. Mikaeri 764m: -11C, NW15m/s, 250cm snowpack and snowdrifts developing. Annupuri 1000m: -15C, WNW7.0m/s. Niseko Village 1000m: -13.6C, WNW7.7m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -14.2C, SSE3.8m/s. Hanazono#3: -9.2C, ENE3.2m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW16m/s, Kamui cape W13m/s (max17@1:25am), 1011hPa, 2.2m waves. Isobars remains moderately tight and westerly wind & snow are persisting on the seas and the mountains. Cornices and snowdrifts are still slowly developing in slopes above 800m elevation. Avalanche risk remains high in leeward slopes in the Backbowl and Nishi-One (west ridge), O-sawa (Annupuri bowl) 1000m cornice slopes, Higashi-One (East ridge) cornice slopes. Crusts, wind-ripples and snowdrifts are present in tree-runs below 800m. The avalanche risk is lowering, however traversing knolls or under cornices in above mentioned slopes could trigger an 80cm thick surface slope avalanche. Moiwa gate#6 & 10 are scheduled to open. Gate#3, 4 & 5 are being prepared to open tomorrow (11th). Please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. Mountain activities are inherently dangerous. There has been over 10 casualties caused by avalanches in this small mountain and nobody should forget or ignore that fact. Respect the Rules. Stay away from avalanche paths. Always be vigilant. The snow in the trees is in good shape. Beware of frostbites. It is a beautiful day; would have liked the snow to continue a bit more, but it has a chance to settle a bit now, and more snow seems to be coming later in the day. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 170cm Posted on Tuesday 9th January 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Yesterday all that new snowfall allowed the ski area to open up more, including runs that connected the top area with base. At last! (<<< was the feeling). The ski area is not fully open yet, but a large part is now available and there's no need to get a gondola back down from the top areas. Maybe one more good snowfall might fix up the remaining areas. We had light snow during the morning yesterday with about another 5-18cm (base-top) reported by the ski area since early morning. My measurement at base was 4cm. And then, later in the afternoon we were treated to some blue sky and sun. Nice. Today should be a great day to be out on the mountain with clearer skies and sunshine. It is a very cold start but the sun will be mild-ing things up a bit. Currently the next potentially ‘heavy’ snow is forecast for just before the weekend. • Niseko Now: Tuesday 9th January 2024

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 24cm Snowfall at base this season 503cm Posted on Tuesday 9th January 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here As of 8:30am I had measured another 24cm of snowfall on top of what we got on the previous report. It is still snowing so there will be more to add tomorrow too. (To be clear: my count is up to 8:30am, any after that will be in the next report). It probably goes without saying but snow conditions are currently, I humbly suggest, fantastic. Unfortunately, yesterday the top lifts were closed and unfortunately they are this morning too (not counting the 'top' lift at Hanazono). Talking of which... Someone asked what that tent-like thingy is that you can see on the webcam close to the lifts at Hanazono. (Sorry, HANAZONO). No, it is not a discount bunk-bed type backpacker accommodation. A bit too posh looking for that, right? It is, in fact, the 'Louis Vuitton Niseko Winter Resort Pop-up Store'. I kid you not. Yet one more fabulous reason to choose Niseko! But don’t go in there expecting to find some toast or onigiri. You’re better off at Seico Mart for those. (Well, the onigiri, anyway). ------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base 7am: -6℃, 10cm snowfall in 12h, 80cm in 24h, moderate visibility. Moiwa 800m: -10.5℃, WNW1.1m/s, 150cm snowfall in 24h. Mikaeri 764m: -9℃, W2m/s, 250cm snowpack. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -9.9℃, 50cm snowfall in 12h, 100cm in 24h, SSW4.5m./s. Hanazono#3: -9.2℃, ENE3.2m/s. Coastal data: Benkei cape WNW11m/s, Kamui cape W19m/s, 1011hPa, 1.2m waves. 50cm in 24h, 100cm in 48h, heavily wind affected dense snow. The last 15cm in 12h is light and not so much affected by the wind. According to observations and weather data, the stabilisation of the new slabs above 800m elevation is delayed and the avalanche risk will remain high during the morning. Caution in O-sawa 1100m cornice slopes, Backbowl sidewalls, Nishi-One (west-ridge) 1000m cornice slope, Mikaeri Bowl, Higashi-One (East ridge) cornice slope. The risk will be high all day in south facing slopes strictly off-limits areas of Haru-no-taki, Yu no sawa. The new snow is deep and dense. It is recommended to carry snowshoes/skins and poles even in the sidecountry. All gates opening is undecided. Please follow the ski patrol’s instructions.
