Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 31cm
Snowfall at base this season 421cm

Posted on Monday 15th January 2024 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.

After a day of pure blue skies, it's back to snow and wind today. It was OK to have a nice day, especially as we celebrated the very local, very small fire festival (dondonyaki) in the Shin-Akakura area at the base of the Kanko Resort. The locals all agreed that we'd never had blue skies for the little gathering and burning of two pillars of straw, at least not in the past 20 years.

Falling pretty steadily now, so we'll see more accumulation through the day. A bit of wind effects showing on the surface of the snow, and the wind is supposed to get stronger today, and even more tomorrow.

Keep an eye out for lift closures (and stay warm on those lifts exposed to the north winds, like the quad at Akakura Onsen!).
