The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. After some more wet conditions yesterday, this morning is dry and there is lots of cloud around this morning. There's also some blue sky too and the sun peeking out in places. Kagura are reporting 5cm of fresh snowfall on their upper slopes and a temperature of -8C up there. I can't see any other reports of snowfall from resorts and there's none at base. It should be keeping colder as well today and not warm up much, which is a good thing. Cold is good. Good news from GALA Yuzawa and Yuzawa Kogen this morning - the Ropeway that connects the top of Yuzawa Kogen with the lower part of the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is open from this morning. Sunshine is likely tomorrow, so smiley face mode on and time to get out skiing! --- There are a lot of visitors from overseas in Yuzawa at the moment, many here to celebrate the Chinese New Year... Happy New Year! The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. 4PM UPDATE It has been snowing on and off during the day today, but no real significant change and generally just a few cm. (And frustratingly there is still none on the ground in town to the north of Yuzawa). The local Niigata forecast is for around 8cm of snowfall in Minamiuonuma and around 20cm snowfall in Yuzawa between now and 9am tomorrow; and snow is still forecast through the day tomorrow. The NASPA Ski Garden resort is hoping to re-open tomorrow (not 100% confirmed, will depend on the snow). Fingers crossed! [All information in this report apart from this text update is from the early morning timestamp] ---- ORIGINAL MORNING REPORT Good morning from Yuzawa. I have good news this morning. We have had some snow overnight and snow is forecast for the day (though we are seeing a bit of a break in it just at the moment). This morning: - Kagura is reporting 15cm fresh snowfall. - Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 15-20cm of fresh snowfall (on the open upper area). They are the specific numbers I can find being reported by resorts. On the ground I can add a modest 9cm in central Yuzawa. It is worth noting that just to the north in Yuzawa, north of Ishiuchi, there's 0cm on the ground... so it has unfortunately not been a blanket coverage over the whole region. So, these are not particularly big numbers. Higher slopes will certainly be enjoying refreshed snow conditions this morning which is good. (It is quite windy higher up so be prepared for that). Most lower slopes around Yuzawa have a fresh white cover, but it is not enough to make that much of a difference yet. Snowfall is due through the day today with heavier snow likely later today and tonight. So fingers crossed. Ishiuchi Maruyama are saying there is a good chance of more courses opening up from tomorrow (today they have 7 upper courses open), and I would imagine the same applying to other ski resorts if we can get a decent amount of snowfall by tomorrow morning. --- Individual ski resort information: Friday 31st January 2020 All information checked and updated manually for each report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. More good news this morning. I can report 14cm of fresh snow on the ground in town base areas and here is what different ski resorts themselves are reporting this morning: Kagura: 30-40cm Yuzawa Kogen: 20cm Maiko Snow Resort: 20cm So I think it's safe to say that there's a good 15+cm of so of fresh snow across most of the mountains this morning and more as you go higher. Conditions should be refreshed and good! :) The Minamiuonuma valley to the north of Yuzawa is also looking white again, with around 10cm or so of snow on the ground just to the north of Ishiuchi. As reported in the update yesterday, NASPA Ski Garden has re-opened this morning with all their lifts and main courses now open. More of Ishiuchi Maruyama is open. The base area of Yuzawa Kogen has re-opened. The Ropeway connecting Yuzawa Kogen and Gala ropeway is operating again. Fresh snow definitely helps!! So while it may not a huge Snow Country-style dumpage (Kagura aside), it is good and encouraging and the forecast also shows cause for optimism for something a bit more like 'normal' going forward. It was snowing for lots of yesterday so it is kind of surprising to see that Kagura are reporting just 1cm of new snowfall and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 5cm. We measured 4cm since the report yesterday here at Yuzawa base. Yesterday things felt much more like what we expect and it was (of course) really great to see that fresh snowfall and some really nice conditions to enjoy especially higher. This morning there has been some light snow falling early on but now it is generally cloudy with some blue skies to be seen in some directions. It should be keeping fairly cold, though tomorrow might be a bit milder again. I am happy to see that beyond tomorrow colder conditions should be back along with more snowfall - the most likely around Wednesday. Sounds good to me. Let's get those mid-winter weather patterns clicked into gear! The fresh snow over these last few days has definitely been a relief for everyone. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yes, it was pretty mild yesterday and I had spots of rain falling when I was out for a bit of a walk last night. But I am pleased to have more fresh snow on the ground to report this morning.My car was parked close to Ishiuchi overnight and I just measured 7cm of snow on the top, and there was 5cm at our measuring spot here in Yuzawa (so that is what is recorded as 'the number'). Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 10cm of fresh snowfall and Kagura are reporting 5cm. So we can generally expect 5+cm on the slopes this morning. It is still snowing now but we are told to expect it to ease off later in the day and be clearer by this evening. The really great news is that snowfall should be back from tomorrow morning, through the day and Thursday too - and there looks like a good chance we'll get a decent amount of it too. I am continuing to be cautiously - and increasingly - excited at the way the weekly forecast is looking more like how we expect it to look in early February. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. I'm so happy this morning, I could almost cry. For a moment yesterday morning I was wondering if we might be disappointed (again) because the sun was out and it didn't really feel like we were on the verge of getting heavy snow. It started at higher elevations around the middle of the day and then properly in the afternoon. Result? This morning is easily - clearly - the best snowfall of the season so far. It is the first time that I have big icicles hanging off the side of my house. And a thick layer of snow on the ground. It just feels... RIGHT! This is the 'normal'. I have measured 48cm of snow (you can see 44cm of snow on the top of the car, photo below, which was parked just to the north of Ishiuchi overnight). This morning Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 50cm of fresh snowfall. Kagura haven't announced a snowfall number today, but the Tashiro Area is closed due to windy conditions. This snowfall will of course make a good difference to some resorts around town. Right now they are probably just 'dealing' with it and changes may happen during the day today or tomorrow. For the moment I note that Ishiuchi Maruyama are now saying that they are almost all open (down to base) and Maiko are preparing more courses to open. I would expect more of that at other resorts too. The top area of Yuzawa Kogen (via the Ropeway) appears to be on hold early on due to wind. That might open later on if conditions allow. It is still snowing but due to ease off later on this afternoon or this evening; sun is expected tomorrow with more snow due on Saturday. I like the sound of that weather pattern. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The snow continued falling into the evening yesterday, longer than we were perhaps expecting according to the forecasts. Not complaining! By 4pm I had wiped 15cm off the measuring point and this morning there's an additional 14cm on there. So that's a total of 29cm since my report yesterday morning. It was coming down very nicely. It was cold. Large icicles forming. Trees laden with snow. Brilliant. And this morning the sun is out and we are treated to blue skies and sunshine. It is a beautiful morning. Nice and cold. I am in awe! Kagura eventually reported over 50cm yesterday and this morning they are reporting another 15cm. Maiko are only reporting 10cm of snow, but that is from 'last night'. (I often wonder why some ski resorts seemingly just ignore snow that falls in a daytime and only report 'overnight'...) With snow now piled up on the side of the roads, at last it now looks and feels like mid-winter. Conditions this morning should be excellent. The individual ski resort information below has all been checked and updated. More lifts and courses are opening up now and probably more still for the weekend. Places need a bit of time to get things prepared ready - including calling on lift staff who will be very happy to get those calls. Might I soon be able to just say 'all open'? Hope so. OK, so we have sun today but more snow is due over the weekend and we might get another decent amount too. Another few days of good snow would really get things running smoothly. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Yesterday was a beauty of a day. And this morning... it has started snowing again which is great to see. Maiko Snow Resort were reporting 5cm early on and Kagura have reported 1cm. But it's coming down nicely now and as of 8:30am I have just measured 6cm (and counting). There will be more to report tomorrow and the snow clouds are due through the day today and tomorrow. Ski resorts are all getting into 'mostly open' or 'almost fully open' territory now. The downhill Falcon course at GALA should be available from later on today. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. And it's another good one! Yesterday evening I cleared 8cm of snow from 'the point' and this morning there is another 35cm on there... making the total since the report yesterday as 43cm. Nice. Remember, this is down at town level and it's good to see snow walls now a feature along the side of Route 17. Kagura are reporting 60cm of fresh snow. Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 40cm. Very nice. So we can expect a good 40+cm of snow across the mountains this morning. (Compacted if groomed of course). Snow is forecast for the day but it is just light snow at the moment and there are even some signs of possible clearer conditions... --- This first part of February - and especially the last three days - really has transformed things. And as you can see below, most resorts are close closing in on 'fully open' status. I might even just take that text off the report to celebrate. Things really can change very quickly! Like I mentioned yesterday, there's some rather warmer conditions coming from the middle of the coming week - recommend you plan accordingly if you have a choice. Conditions should be best over the next few days. Hopefully we'll see things getting colder beyond that upcoming warmer spell. --- The Kagura to Tashiro connecting course is not open this morning due to avalanche risk and it looks like the top Number 5 lift at Kagura is closed too. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was snowing on and off through the day yesterday; a few periods of clearer weather and even sunshine in places. It was still snowing later in the evening when I went out to shovel some snow**. The popular ski resorts were very busy too - there were a lot of people out enjoying the fresh snow. I have observed another 16cm of snowfall to report since my report yesterday morning. This morning both Kagura and Maiko - the resorts that report such numbers - are both reporting 10cm. That seem quite low considering what I have observed, but it is what it is! (Maiko always flag their number as 'snowfall since last night', so perhaps that explains it). There has been a lot of cloud around this morning but increasingly blue sky too over the last hour or so and it is bright and some sunshine too. It's a chilly start to the morning with temperatures due to rise to the other side of zero, and we have more snowfall due from afternoon through into tomorrow morning so hopefully I'll be bringing further snowfall numbers in my next report. Tomorrow is a national holiday in Japan (National Foundation Day) so it will be busier than usual for a Tuesday. Indeed, today may be busier than usual for a Monday with some people taking the day off. If you did that --- very good timing, I say!! Beyond tomorrow, we are still forecast some milder/warmer conditions in the second part of the week. (** After the lack of shovelling work required through December and January, you won't find me moaning about shovelling snow any time in the near future. I love it. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. There's more snow to report this morning after it started in the afternoon yesterday. The Kagura resort are this morning reporting 40cm of fresh snowfall and I am hearing similar from over at Naeba too. Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 20cm. Other resorts are reporting... actually, we wish they did! On our trusted measuring spot and nearby I can report around 20cm. It is snowing still as this report is about to be posted, but due to ease off later on by this afternoon. It might well be another busy day today -- today is National Foundation Day and a holiday in Japan. We are still forecast warmer conditions tomorrow through Friday (with some rain in the mix too unfortunately), but the good news on that front is that there seems to be a return to colder conditions and more snow lined up next week. --- The Number 5 top lift at Kagura is closed today due to avalanche risk. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. There has been a few spots of rain early morning but we are due a day of cloudy skies and temperatures just a little lower than yesterday - still mild. (I so don't want to say this, but) tomorrow is going to be warmer still - rising to perhaps a few above 10C. We are still scheduled to enjoy a return to colder conditions during Monday and in particular Tuesday when we can hope to get a fresh layer of snow. In the meantime it's probably going to be a spring-like feel for the weekend - both in temperatures and snow conditions. At times like this in particular you'll get better snow the higher you go. --- The Tokamachi Snow Festival is taking place today and tomorrow. It is the largest snow festival in the region and has been taking place since 1950. Unfortunately, unusually low levels of snow has been causing big problems this season. Organisers have been trucking in snow from nearby mountains and changing plans to cope with the situation - they were determined not to cancel. The snow sculptures that appear around town are usually really impressive - those guys really do a great job. There aren't going to be as many sculptures this year and some events have been scaled down, but I'm sure it will still be fun. I am feeling the need to get over there and show my support. Tokamachi is about 45 minutes from Yuzawa by car and you can also get a train (Hokuhoku line) from Echigo Yuzawa Station.
