Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 15cm
Snowfall at base this seas 291cm

Posted on Monday 10th February 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here.

It was snowing on and off through the day yesterday; a few periods of clearer weather and even sunshine in places. It was still snowing later in the evening when I went out to shovel some snow**.

The popular ski resorts were very busy too - there were a lot of people out enjoying the fresh snow.

I have observed another 16cm of snowfall to report since my report yesterday morning.

This morning both Kagura and Maiko - the resorts that report such numbers - are both reporting 10cm. That seem quite low considering what I have observed, but it is what it is! (Maiko always flag their number as 'snowfall since last night', so perhaps that explains it).

There has been a lot of cloud around this morning but increasingly blue sky too over the last hour or so and it is bright and some sunshine too. It's a chilly start to the morning with temperatures due to rise to the other side of zero, and we have more snowfall due from afternoon through into tomorrow morning so hopefully I'll be bringing further snowfall numbers in my next report.

Tomorrow is a national holiday in Japan (National Foundation Day) so it will be busier than usual for a Tuesday. Indeed, today may be busier than usual for a Monday with some people taking the day off. If you did that --- very good timing, I say!!

Beyond tomorrow, we are still forecast some milder/warmer conditions in the second part of the week.

(** After the lack of shovelling work required through December and January, you won't find me moaning about shovelling snow any time in the near future. I love it. The more shovelling the better...)
