It was a bit on the heavy side yesterday but this morning is colder and a better quality lighter snow. We expect windy conditions today along with the continued snow. By the way, you may also have noticed that the cumulative snowfall has taken a big jump this morning to 1101cm. I can't explain that, will try to find an explanation from official sources. It was calmer by the time of New Year. The strong winds really blew the snow around, though, and as a result just 10cm at base to record. It is worth noting that there will be more than that in places, and indeed the ski area was reporting 30cm this morning. Difficult to pin down one number on a day like today, but the measurement is what the measurement is! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Happy New Year! Pretty windy in the early evening last night, but it tapered off later. I’m surprised that many of the areas are not reporting any new snow, because it came down pretty good after a rainy start to the day. Not a ton of snow, but some extra for the snowpack. The snow is still falling, just some pretty flakes floating down as the sun tries to come out to make them sparkle. The wind has come up a bit in the last few minutes, though. Not anything that would affect lift operations, but always keep an eye on that if it gets blustery. That wine was very yummy, and the time with friends was fun. Good times in good places. It is a lovely New Years Day morning. Rather bright (...see above!), with a lot of blue sky and a little cloud. Those heading out to the slopes will be rewarded with nice fresh snow conditions and some beautiful scenery too. Ski areas are reporting up to about 20-30cm of fresh on the mountains. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here After some varied weather conditions yesterday, there was slightly over 4cm of fine quality snow at my measuring point this morning. That brings my observed snowfall total for December to 311cm and the total for the season up to 349cm. More on that tomorrow. It is an overcast start to the day. Early on this morning the Morino Chair and Country Road Chair lifts at Niseko Village are showing as being closed. (I'm not sure if that is just an early morning thing, but it is perhaps worth noting). All other lifts scheduled to be operating as planned. The first week of 2025 looks set to continue the pattern of consistent snowfall, perhaps modest in nature (rather than dramatic). There will be various events and celebrations going on tonight and into the early hours of tomorrow morning for the New Year. Special New Year fireworks displays will be happening at the following times, I believe these to be correct: Niseko Hirafu: 8:00pm Niseko Village: 9:00pm Niseko Annupuri: 11:59pm Niseko Hanazono: 12 midnight Niseko Annupuri is offering special extended night skiing from 7:30pm until 11:00pm tonight, to be followed by New Year events. (Now that's a proper night skiing time. And free too, apparently!) Tomorrow morning the Niseko Annupuri gondola will be opening early, from 7:20am until 8:20am, for special 'First Run' operations. (And also on 2nd-3rd and then 11th-13th January). That costs 2,000 yen. Anyway, stay safe and have fun. That's it from me for this year. It has been a pleasure. See you in 2025! ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -5℃, 10cm of light crystalline snow preceding low pressure system, light winds. Moiwa 800m: -5.9℃, E3.6m/s, 10cm new snow, no cornice or slab development. Mikaeri 750m: ENE1.5m/s, 15cm new snow. Annupuri 1100m: -7.4℃, S0.3m/s, 10cm new snow. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -7.0℃, S4.7m/s, 10cm of light crystalline snow. Coastal data: Benkei Cape SSW2m/s, Kamui Cape E5m/s, 1007kPa, wave 0.5m. 10-15cm of light crystalline snow fell in front of an approaching low pressure system. There were no major fractures observed at 5am tests, slabs are stable and below 1000m the avalanche risk is low. Above 1100m in Kozan-no-sawa(backbowl), Osawa side wall, and HigashiOne(east ridge), shallow slabs and point-generated avalanches are likely to occur regardless of the slope aspect. If a slab fractures and causes an avalanche on these steep slopes, it could become large and very dangerous. So do not cut under cornices or knolls, be in the bottom of the valley or at the bottom of the slope. Also avoid skiing at the same time. The summit gates are scheduled to open, please listen to the patrol's opinions and prepare before leaving the resort. Never enter strictly off limits areas. With the approach of the low pressure system, temperatures are expected to rise, making it easier for snow to fall off roofs. Tell the children not to play under roofs. Have a great day starting tomorrow in 2025. The latest Niseko Now report can be found here I am happy to report that it is snowing rather nicely at the moment, and I have another 9cm to add since yesterday. There doesn't seem to be much of a wind, too, so while visibility might be limited in some places, should be fun conditions out there. We might get a bit of blue sky and sun today at times. Forecasts seem to be predicting regular and consistent snowfall across the coming week. Perhaps not huge amounts, but regular top-ups all the same. Every ski lift on the mountain is moving this morning, even that lazy Country Road one! All peak gates should be open too. I knew we'd get there some day. All very good to see. I'm going to start to look back at the season so far and compare some data which should be interesting. I'll post my monthly review on Wednesday. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base -6℃, 5cm new snow, calm. Moiwa 800m: -10.2℃, NW9.1m/s(20m/s ` midnight), major cornice and slab development, increasing snow depth. Mikaeri 750m: -9℃, WNW3.4m/s, 320cm snow depth, unstable knolls. Annupuri 1100m: -13.1℃, WNW7.9m/s(23m/s @ midnight), major slab development and snow depth increase. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -12.8℃, ESE2.7m/s, East ridge snow depth is increasing and knolls will easily fracture. Coastal data: Benkei cape NNW10m/s, Kamui cape W9m/s, 1019kPa, wave 1.6m. Today, all peak gates will be opened. Please follow the patrols instructions and listen to the patrol's advice before passing through the gates. Based on the morning tests, data evaluation and snowfall transition, slabs are starting to stabilize, but due to the large amount of snow, the avalanche risk is still very high on Annupuri Osawa side wall and Kozan no Sawa(Backbowl) side wall at 1100m. Similarly, on HigashiOne(east ridge) the cornice and wind-driven snow slabs around knolls are also likely to fracture from rider stimulation. Do not be tempted by internet videos to get on these slopes without caution. Although the gates are open, it does not mean that the mountain is safe. Avalanches that occur in places with large elevation differences are large and fast. I repeat, the avalanche risk is high in the valleys above 1000m. Please act with common sense. Do not cut knolls, there will be many people in the valley below you. Also, do not be in the bottom of the valley below, you might get taken out by an avalanche started way above you by an unknown person. Niseko respects your freedom to ride off-course by opening and closing the gates, but we are always concerned about your safety. Avalanches are a natural phenomenon, but accidents happen when people are involved. There is no safety in this sport. Even if the cause of an accident is known, the dead will not come back. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . It is a fine and sunny morning across the region (some low cloud aside). Still quite cold, but it will be warming up by this afternoon as the sun gets to work. The Yamabiko Four lift seems to be undergoing some kind of inspection this morning, meaning that a few top runs are not available at the moment. All other lifts are open. 30 minute extension to opening times until Friday (3rd January) and night skiing at Nagasaka until Saturday 4th. We are in one of the most popular periods of the season, so there are lot of people around. Happily, we have a lot of lovely snow for everyone to enjoy and of course Nozawa is pretty big. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A late report on a sunny day! No snow falling! Time to catch up on the plowing and cleaning and just enjoying a nice day.... I have a good excuse, in that I’m typing at a clinic to which I brought a (non-Japanese-speaking) neighbor needing some pre-holiday medical attention. A condition which, if you find yourselves in, readers, know it can be hard to find help in the coming days and medicine can be hard to get (emergency care is no problem, of course). OK, back to snow and there’s lots of it and it looks great out there. The lifts still may be problematic, but maybe the best idea is to move on if a lift seems to be running sluggishly or intermittently. On a day like today, though, it might be kind of nice just sitting on a chairlift in the middle of the sugi tree forest....
