Good Morning Skiers and Boarders, I wouldn't go so far as to say "All's right with the world" yet, but it's definitely a darn sight closer than it was yesterday. A nice snowfall overnight bringing a much needed injection to the slopes. Officially 15 cm of fwesh at the top secret Snow Japan weather station near the base of the Kitanomine Gondola. By Hokkaido standards, it's not that wight and fwuffy, and actually quite packable. I think that's exactly what we need right now to stick to and cover up the existing base. It's been snowing steadily the last several hours, which is great to see, and exactly how winter usually is in Furano. Kamui Ski Links reports 20 cm overnight. That should be pretty nice. Can't say about Tomamu as they coyly don't report new snow, only the base total. Forget that! I'm not going to sit there and keep a spreadsheet just to figure out your fresh snowfall. You don't want to play? Fine, then I don't have to be interested. Key points to keep in mind about Tomamu: They have a terrain park, and the biggest indoor wave pool in Japan. It's 80 meters long. Awesome. Looks like it's supposed to snow the rest of the day and all day tomorrow. Such good news. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . This morning the ski area is reporting an additional 30cm of snow overnight, so with the 10cm it reported yesterday at 3pm that is 40cm over 24 hours. Lower areas all come in at 15-25cm. More snow forecast through tomorrow. And next week seems to be shaping up nice too. It's good to be back to more mid winter like conditions. Ski area is reporting the chance of gondola disruption due to wind on mountain today, though all seems to be ok at the moment. The latest Furano Now report can be found here . Hello Skiers & Snowboarders, Well, well, for the first time in 4 days, and only the third time in 9 days, we have a whiff of snowfall...2 cm. BUT, looks like a potential decent snowfall tonight, so this morning was perhaps just the hors d'oeuvres. Viz is decent, but looks like some clouds have parked on top of the peaks--probably a bit foggy up there. Temps at the base will max out at +1 C today--we're not losing too much. Reminder that the Gondola is opening 30 minutes earlier every day at 8:30, as well as all the lifts on the Furano side (30 minutes early) in an attempt to spread out the morning rush and get people onto the mountain due to the shutdown of Lift B. So line-haters should get up there early and you'll be rewarded. Due to the lack of replenishing snowfall, the base in some high traffic areas is thinning out, and some rocks are popping up. If you see some brown, step lightly and try to go around it. 50th annual snow festival is this Saturday night and Sunday until about 4 PM. Lots of fun, food, drummers, fireworks, etc. Be sure to check it out. Think snow. Furano: All except Lift B. Lifts open 30 minutes earlier than normal. Kitanomine: All lifts. Gondola open at 8:30. Night skiing until 6:00 PM on both sides. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow has started to fall, coming down pretty heavy at times then slowing a bit. All the TV news is going crazy about a meter or more falling on the Japan Sea side (including Myoko, of course), and let’s hope they’re right! There’s a pretty hard layer of snow under the new snow, which will be a concern for those going into the backcountry, especially the big/steep stuff around the caldera. But a nice refill of fresh powder will be great for everyone all over the hill. Except maybe the kids in the big school groups now all over the Akakura resorts, who were having an interesting first time on groomed snow yesterday. Add some boot-high powder, and things get much more fun.... I got up early, thinking I might have to plow, but no sound of the big rotary snowthrower—my wintertime alarm clock—and the snow wasn’t really falling that hard. It’s been good for the past two hours or so, with a nice, if not massive, accumulation so far. Right now the wind is shifting to the west and picking up a bit; the national TV news and my favorite weather site both have sunny skies possible later in the day, but let’s just see.... The wind looks like it will shift to the northwest, not usually where high pressure comes in, but there’s also a big low pressure area out in the Pacific that’s spinning things around. As we say so often this season, who knows? Wait and see time. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good news on this Sunday morning... we have a nice, fresh layer of snow. The ski area is reporting 5cm-19cm of snowfall across the mountain (base to top), so a decent layer to play in especially higher up. I have measured 11cm. We might receive some more today, with more snow incoming mid-week too. Let's hope this sees us head back into more mid-winter like conditions. Limited visibility in places this morning.
