  • Yuzawa Now: Thursday 24th January 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 22cm Snowfall at base this season 653cm Posted on Thursday 24th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was a lovely morning yesterday. There were sunny and blue skies with a moderate wind at times and in places but not enough to mess up lift operations. The clouds kept away from Yuzawa for the most part in the morning and a bit longer with more gradually turning up in the afternoon. Rather mild. Evening, it got a little wet before snow started and this morning there's a nice new layer of fresh snow on the ground once again. This morning Kagura are reporting 40cm of fresh snowfall and Maiko are reporting just 10cm, which seems a bit low. We have measured 22cm of fresh snowfall this morning in Yuzawa and 30cm a little to the north in Shiozawa town area. Wind conditions are preventing Tashiro Area of Kagura from opening this morning. It also seems that the top lift at Yuzawa Kogen is closed, but the Kogen area (including the Yuzawa Kogen Ropeway) of that resort is otherwise open as normal. And so is GALA Yuzawa. It is colder today and snow is forecast through the day, perhaps some light snow at times tomorrow and then back to heavy snow for Saturday. ---- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa - 340m (official snow depth) Iwappara - 205cm (official snow depth) Kagura - Hmm, they don't seem to be announcing it anymore. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 25th January 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 33cm Snowfall at base this season 686cm Posted on Friday 25th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. The snow keeps on coming in - and it doesn't look like it is going to give up and clear up anytime soon with some big numbers expected later tomorrow into Sunday. Keep that in mind if you are planning on being here over the weekend. Light snow, moderate in places, at the moment; and that is what is generally expected for today, perhaps easing off at times particularly this afternoon. Kagura are reporting 20-30cm of fresh snow 'since yesterday' and Maiko are reporting 10cm 'since yesterday evening' (which again seems curiously low). I have measured more than what those resorts are - 9cm yesterday evening and another 24cm this morning. So that makes 33cm since my report yesterday. Why the differences? It's a good question but... I don't have a clear answer and there is probably some 'case by case' going on too. Some may suggest that some ski resorts go a bit easy on the numbers once there is generally lots of snow - and are much keener to report larger numbers at the beginning and end of a season. Some may say it's just nature not depositing the snow in fixed amounts and in a uniform manner. I personally really wish that more ski resorts would report fresh snowfall numbers each day, but the fact is that most of them don't and choose to just report that snow depth number. Which some might say is a pretty meaningless number. ;) ---- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa - 340m (official snow depth) Iwappara - 230cm (official snow depth) Kagura - Hmm, they don't seem to be announcing it anymore. • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 26th January 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 17cm Snowfall at base this season 703cm Posted on Saturday 26th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. Yesterday we enjoyed a bit of a break in the clouds during the daytime (after snow in the morning), but it was back to snow overnight. I had brushed away 2cm of snow from the morning mid afternoon, and have just moved another 15cm this morning, giving me 17cm to put on the report this morning from town base. And the 'resorts that report' are saying 5-10cm (Kagura) and 10cm (Maiko). Interesting. It is snowing now with heavy snow still due tonight - indeed, it's forecast for the snow to increase as the day goes on today. Wind doesn't look like it should be a problem so all ski resorts appear to be opening as planned. There should be some big numbers tomorrow morning! ---- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa - 340m (official snow depth) Iwappara - 215cm (official snow depth) Kagura - Hmm, they don't seem to be announcing it anymore. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 36cm Snowfall at base this season 739cm Posted on Sunday 27th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Lots more snow to report this morning after a day of snow and heavy snowfall at times in the afternoon. Yesterday evening I cleared 16cm of snow off the measuring point and this morning there is an additional 20cm on there. So a total of 36cm. That is actually not as much as we were perhaps expecting, but it's still a nice number to be able to report of course. Kagura are reporting 40cm of fresh snowfall and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 25cm. Snow continues to fall this morning and it is forecast to continue through the day, varying from light at times to heavier at others, and easing off by evening. We might get some sunshine tomorrow which should make it a rather happy Monday morning. --- The Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa will be closed for the day (but the other areas of GALA are open as normal). ---- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa - 340m (official snow depth) Iwappara - 255cm (official snow depth) Kagura - Unconfirmed Kandatsu Kogen - 280cm (official snow depth) Naeba - 200cm (official snow depth) - Please see our Naeba Now report for daily updates from Naeba NASPA Ski Garden - 310cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Kogen - Top: 310cm (official snow depth) - Base: 210cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Park - 225cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Nakazato - 230cm (official snow depth) ----- Ski resorts in Minamiuonuma - just to the north of Yuzawa: Ishiuchi Maruyama - Top: 330cm (official snow depth) - Base: 230cm (official snow depth) Joetsu Kokusai - 300cm (official snow depth) Maiko Snow Resort - Top: 330cm (official snow depth) - Base: 210cm (official snow depth) Muikamachi Hakkaisan - 240cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Now 2018-2019 season Data as of Sunday 27th January 2019 Total snowfall at base so far 739cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 35 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 63cm (22nd January) November 2018 snowfall 2cm reported on 1 day December 2018 snowfall 253cm reported on 13 days January 2019 snowfall 484cm reported on 21 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Monday 28th January 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 11cm Snowfall at base this season 750cm Posted on Monday 28th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa and welcome to the start of another week. It was snowing for much of yesterday and I cleared away 10cm of snow early evening - there's another 1cm there this morning, so there's 11cm to include in my report this morning. No cm of fresh snow is being reported by Kagura or Maiko; presumably meaning none overnight, because there was definitely snow falling during the day yesterday! The forecasts were telling us that we might get some sunshine this morning but as of 7:30am it is cloudy and overcast. There's always the chance that those clouds might clear up for a while, of course. It is currently -2C but a rather mild day is likely, perhaps warming up to as much as 5-6C. (We have enjoyed a lot of snow this month - almost 5m in town - which is great, but we could do without warmer conditions before the snow comes each time, which seems to be something of a pattern). Talking of which - heavy snow due once again tonight and a day of snow tomorrow. The Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is back open this morning, so I would expect all ski resorts in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma to be open as planned. ---- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa - 340m (official snow depth) Iwappara - 250cm (official snow depth) Kagura - Unconfirmed Kandatsu Kogen - 275cm (official snow depth) Naeba - 200cm (official snow depth) - Please see our Naeba Now report for daily updates from Naeba NASPA Ski Garden - 310cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Kogen - Top: 310cm (official snow depth) - Base: 210cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Park - 225cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Nakazato - 230cm (official snow depth) ----- Ski resorts in Minamiuonuma - just to the north of Yuzawa: Ishiuchi Maruyama - Top: 320cm (official snow depth) - Base: 210cm (official snow depth) Joetsu Kokusai - 300cm (official snow depth) Maiko Snow Resort - Top: 330cm (official snow depth) - Base: 210cm (official snow depth) Muikamachi Hakkaisan - 240cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Now 2018-2019 season Data as of Monday 28th January 2019 Total snowfall at base so far 750cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 36 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 63cm (22nd January) November 2018 snowfall 2cm reported on 1 day December 2018 snowfall 253cm reported on 13 days January 2019 snowfall 495cm reported on 22 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. We have measured 32cm in town (and 35cm to the north of Yuzawa in the Shiozawa area of Minamiuonuma) and that what is going on the report. All those numbers sound like a good start to February! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 26cm Snowfall at base this season 836cm Posted on Saturday 2nd February 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. By 5pm last night there was 20cm of snow since the morning and this morning I have just cleared another 6cm, so that makes 26cm in total to add to my report this morning. Light snow has been falling early on this morning but it seems to be quickly clearing and there's increasingly blue sky appearing over Yuzawa as I write this, with more cloud still to the north over Minamiuonuma. Tomorrow is still very likely to be sunny and warm with temps possibly rising to close on +10C in town in the afternoon. We can just hope that it quickly cools down again sometime on Monday, and happily we do have more snow lined up there on the forecast. • Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 5th February 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 837cm Posted on Tuesday 5th February 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. And a very 'Happy New Year' to everyone celebrating the Chinese New Year! Yesterday was not a nice day weather-wise. Wet and mild (though actually when I was out it actually felt pretty chilly) and there was all sorts of weather news on the TV... record breaking temperatures and the like. Warm and wet spells have been known to happen in the middle of the winter season; it's what happens next that is important. There was that chance of snow on the forecast yesterday, but just 3-5cm is being reported by Kagura. There was actually a dusting of snow on our measuring point - just about enough for me to be able to justify adding 1cm to the reports this morning. I am probably being a bit kind there, but there have been days when I have ignored a few mm too, so I think it is fair. It is colder this morning which is good, currently around -1C, with temps due to rise to around +4C in town later on. We are also expecting sunshine and clearer skies today. Early on there's a bright but overcast feel to the morning with some blue sky in places. The forecasts show the next snowfall due for us around Thursday, with a better chance of a decent amount of fresh around Saturday. For now the best snow conditions will be found the higher you go. Groomers should be good though and as long as it doesn't warm up too much it should be a nice day. Have a good one. ---- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa - 330cm (official snow depth) Iwappara - 215cm (official snow depth) Kagura - Unconfirmed! • Yuzawa Now: Friday 8th February 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 8cm Snowfall at base this season 845cm Posted on Friday 8th February 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. After that rather prolonged spell of mild (with a bit of rain added into the mix last night), it is sure good to see some fresh snow this morning. Maiko Snow Resort is reporting 5-10cm and Kagura are reporting 10cm. I have measured 8cm. So that gives you a good idea of what to expect. Not enough to give us a deep fresh cover yet, but an improvement and hopefully we will get some more today (though I'm not sure we should expect too much). The forecasts are still looking good for the chance of some fairly regular snow over the coming week. It's noticeably colder too and temps today should remain just under zero. Monday is a national holiday in Japan so the upcoming weekend is a long 3-day one for many. It's a busy one traditionally so come on nature.. bit more fresh please! ---- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa - 310cm (official snow depth) Iwappara - 210cm (official snow depth) Kagura - Unconfirmed! • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 9th February 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 16cm Snowfall at base this season 861cm Posted on Saturday 9th February 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Snow most of the day yesterday which was good to see and I cleared away 15cm of snow last night and there's 1cm more there this morning. Kagura this morning are reporting 10cm of fresh snowfall and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 5-10cm. This morning it is generally cloudy over the region. Sounds like it is going to be snowing in Tokyo this morning. Heavy snow alert! 5cm! Here in Snow Country we can have a bit of a laugh at such a small amount, but if you're not prepared for it or used to it, just a bit of snow can cause big problems. This weekend is one of the most popular of the season because Monday is a national holiday. The weather conditions in the capital region may well put some people off being away for the weekend... Take care everyone. Hopefully more fresh snow tonight and snow falling tomorrow too. ---- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa - 300cm (official snow depth) Iwappara - 215cm (official snow depth) Kagura - Unconfirmed!
