  • Yuzawa Now: Monday 7th January 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 29cm Snowfall at base this season 382cm Posted on Monday 7th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. After a day of snow falling for the most part there was just 2cm of snow measured early evening, but another nice thick layer of snow on the ground this morning. I am measuring 27cm, giving me a total of 29cm since yesterday to add to the report this morning. A very fine start to a Monday morning. Kagura are reporting 20cm and so are Maiko Snow Resort. As for the forecast, the current moderate snowfall might ease during the day but there snow clouds will likely remain over the region - with some more heavy snow due tomorrow night into Wednesday. We haven't seen much sunshine since the heavy snow started in the last week of December. The next clearer day is probably going to be Thursday if you want some sun and snow. With heavy snow due on Wednesday, conditions on Thursday should be excellent too. ----- All ski resorts in the area are open (either fully open or close to fully open). • Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 8th January 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 11cm Snowfall at base this season 393cm Posted on Tuesday 8th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. It was falling fairly heavily at times during the day yesterday, ending up with 9cm of fresh snow measured at town level by 5pm. This morning there is an additional 2cm, so 11cm to add to the reports today. Kagura this morning are reporting about 3cm of snowfall and Ishiuchi Maruyama are reporting 10cm. It's... still snowing. Well, actually, it was until not too long ago. In the last hour or so, rather quickly clouds have been clearing with some blue sky opening up in places. I wonder how long that will last and it might get clearer and brighter. Milder conditions are on the forecast for today with light snow this afternoon - borderline sleet or even perhaps rain in places just to the north of Yuzawa; hopefully we can avoid that. Even if that happens though, it shouldn't last too long - as we should be back to snow pretty quickly, with heavy snow still due overnight tonight and into tomorrow. Stay cold please! Beyond that there is some sun on the forecasts. We haven't seen much of that in the last few weeks so it will be good to see. Especially if we get that heavy snow tonight. ----- The Gondola at Maiko Snow Resort has been having some kind of technical problems since yesterday and they are still checking it out. It will be closed for the day today - though that doesn't affect the courses open at the resort, which otherwise is open as normal. (Take the two quads to get up to the top area). ----- All ski resorts in the area are open (either fully open or close to fully open). • Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 9th January 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 42cm Snowfall at base this season 435cm Posted on Wednesday 9th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Good morning from Yuzawa. I'll try not to be too wordy as there's a lot to report. Some rain yesterday but that is quickly forgotten because... Heavy snowfall! I am measuring 42cm. Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 40cm; Kagura are reporting 50cm. The heavy snowfall and winds are affecting a few ski resorts. Here's the information that we have been able to find as of 8:30am: The Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is closed. (Otherwise open as normal). The Tashiro Area of Kagura is closed (Kagura is open until the Kagura Number 1 pair lift). The top area of Yuzawa Kogen (along with the Ropeway) is closed. The lower area is open. The Gondola is still closed at Maiko Snow Resort, but that does not affect areas that are open. There may also be some delayed lift openings as they cope with all the snow. Don't be confused with some official snow depths actually decreasing this morning. It's probably due to the rain in areas yesterday and not yet catching up with a busy morning. The snow should ease off later today. Tomorrow should be excellent - sun is expected! ----- All ski resorts in the area are open (either fully open or close to fully open). Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 447cm Posted on Thursday 10th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. An early report this morning. (Your reporter desperately wants to get out early on the skis this morning.) After the snow, it's clearer blue skies this morning with just a little cloud here and there. Cold too! Snow fell during the day yesterday, not as heavily as it had been by the afternoon, but I measured 12cm since morning by 5pm. There's no more to report this morning other than a slight dusting. All the ski resorts should be open this morning and it's good to see the Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa also getting back open and also the Gondola at Maiko. Also good to see some official snow depths reaching 3m (though the actual snow that has fallen is more important than those numbers). It should be a fine morning, with perhaps a little wind. We might even get a little snow overnight, but watch the temperatures - hopefully it's going to keep low enough. ----- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa - 310cm (official snow depth) Iwappara - 185cm (official snow depth) Kagura - Kagura area: 300cm (official snow depth) - Mitsumata area: 250cm (official snow depth) - Tashiro area: 280cm (official snow depth) Kandatsu Kogen - 210cm (official snow depth) Naeba - 180cm (official snow depth) - Please see our Naeba Now report for daily updates from Naeba NASPA Ski Garden - 250cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Kogen - Top: 250cm (official snow depth) - Base: 170cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Park - 195cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Nakazato - 170cm (official snow depth) ----- Ski resorts in Minamiuonuma - just to the north of Yuzawa: Ishiuchi Maruyama - 250cm (official snow depth) Joetsu Kokusai - 230cm (official snow depth) Maiko Snow Resort - Top: 265cm (official snow depth) - Base: 160cm (official snow depth) Muikamachi Hakkaisan - 200cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Now 2018-2019 season Data as of Thursday 10th January 2019 Total snowfall at base so far 447cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 23 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 50cm (29th December) November 2018 snowfall 2cm reported on 1 day December 2018 snowfall 253cm reported on 13 days January 2019 snowfall 192cm reported on 9 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 11th January 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 450cm Posted on Friday 11th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday started off very cold. In fact, I had trouble opening my garage door and for a short while was worried a morning on the slopes might not happen. Happily I was able to get it open and enjoy most of the day on the snow. We saw some sunshine for lots of the day with a bit of wind and with periods of more cloudy skies - sometimes rather dark and moody looking. But we ended up with nice clear skies again before it got dark. It is much (much) milder this morning and light wet snow has been falling. It isn't as cold but it does not look like temperatures should rise by much at all during the day, keeping fairly close to zero maybe just above. There is some rather wet snow on the ground around town areas. Higher up it seems that more snow has fallen as Kagura are reporting 15cm of fresh. Maiko Snow Resort are also reporting 10-15cm, presumably at upper areas. ----- Monday is national holiday in Japan - 'Seijin-no-hi' (Coming of Age Day). Right now the forecast is for generally fine and calm weather conditions with a good chance of sunshine from tomorrow through Monday. The ski resorts will likely be very happy to hear that. Let's just hope that it doesn't warm up too much. The rest of us will very probably be hoping for a delivery of fresh snow by the end of the long weekend, and that next snow is currently forecast for around Wednesday. ----- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa - 290cm (official snow depth) Iwappara - 175cm (official snow depth) Kagura - Kagura area: 300cm (official snow depth) - Mitsumata area: 250cm (official snow depth) - Tashiro area: 280cm (official snow depth) Kandatsu Kogen - 210cm (official snow depth) Naeba - 180cm (official snow depth) - Please see our Naeba Now report for daily updates from Naeba NASPA Ski Garden - 270cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Kogen - Top: 250cm (official snow depth) - Base: 170cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Park - 195cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Nakazato - 170cm (official snow depth) ----- Ski resorts in Minamiuonuma - just to the north of Yuzawa: Ishiuchi Maruyama - 250cm (official snow depth) Joetsu Kokusai - 230cm (official snow depth) Maiko Snow Resort - Top: 265cm (official snow depth) - Base: 160cm (official snow depth) Muikamachi Hakkaisan - 220cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Now 2018-2019 season Data as of Friday 11th January 2019 Total snowfall at base so far 450cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 24 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 50cm (29th December) November 2018 snowfall 2cm reported on 1 day December 2018 snowfall 253cm reported on 13 days January 2019 snowfall 195cm reported on 10 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday while it did not feel windy early on, it did actually get pretty blowy - so we could understand why some resorts and lifts were closed. Ishiuchi seemed to cancel their nighta as well. Mild too. Happily... It is good to see some fresh snow on the ground this morning. Not a huge amount and certainly not enough to reset the mountain yet, but it is a start and we do have fairly regular snow on the forecast into the weekend and beyond. I am measuring 5cm of fresh snowfall here in town so hopefully there might be a bit more than that higher up. I see Maiko are reporting 5cm too. It is colder and should remain bobbing about around 0C and there is less wind too. As far as I can tell, all of the ski resorts in the region plan to be opening as normal this morning including GALA Yuzawa and Tashiro. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 18th January 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 21cm Snowfall at base this season 488cm Posted on Friday 18th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We enjoyed some very fine sunny weather during the morning yesterday which was a nice surprise. Clouds gradually started appearing from the early afternoon. It is fairly easy to ignore and forgive the bit of rain last night because this morning there is a nice layer of fresh snow on the ground. I have just measured 21cm of it. Yuzawa Kogen and Maiko Snow Resort are both reporting 20cm of it. Kagura are reporting up to 50cm. That sounds good! (But Kagura do not seem to currently be updating/reporting their official snow depth numbers; not that those numbers are particularly important). It looks like the Tashiro area of Kagura is closed for the day due to forecast strong winds with the Kagura area open up to the Kagura Number 1 romance lift. As far as I can tell, other ski resorts in Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma are opening as normal (but we might need to keep an eye on wind conditions). There are some breaks in the cloud above Yuzawa right now but a bank of grey cloud just to the north in Minamiuonuma and snow still falling - as can be seen on the images below. So that potential break is quite probably temporary. Snow is forecast for the day and into tomorrow. Indeed, regular snow through into next week. ---- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa - 250m (official snow depth) Iwappara - 160cm (official snow depth) Kagura - Kagura area: 300cm (official snow depth) - Mitsumata area: 250cm (official snow depth) - Tashiro area: 280cm (official snow depth) Kandatsu Kogen - 190cm (official snow depth) Naeba - 180cm (official snow depth) - Please see our Naeba Now report for daily updates from Naeba NASPA Ski Garden - 210cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Kogen - Top: 230cm (official snow depth) - Base: 150cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Park - 140cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Nakazato - 145cm (official snow depth) ----- Ski resorts in Minamiuonuma - just to the north of Yuzawa: Ishiuchi Maruyama - 250cm (official snow depth) Joetsu Kokusai - 210cm (official snow depth) Maiko Snow Resort - Top: 240cm (official snow depth) - Base: 110cm (official snow depth) Muikamachi Hakkaisan - 230cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Now 2018-2019 season Data as of Friday 18th January 2019 Total snowfall at base so far 488cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 27 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 50cm (29th December) November 2018 snowfall 2cm reported on 1 day December 2018 snowfall 253cm reported on 13 days January 2019 snowfall 233cm reported on 13 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 19th January 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 34cm Snowfall at base this season 522cm Posted on Saturday 19th January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. We ended up getting some really good snowfall during the day in Yuzawa yesterday, coming down hard at times. This morning both Kagura and Maiko Snow Resort are reporting 30cm of fresh. I have just measured 34cm so that is what goes on the report. Changeable conditions early this morning with some fast moving cloud, light snow falling in places and blue sky and sunshine in others. It will be interesting to see if we can get clearer skies for the day, but it may just end up with cloud and light snow. Temperatures are forecast to be on the milder side today and tomorrow. There is even some chance of rain later tomorrow - but that is before it gets colder again and more snow is due to move in. The one thing that is more certain is that it should be very nice snow conditions on the mountains this morning. Less wind and resorts should be opening as normal. The only thing to note at the moment is that GALA Yuzawa has not been decided on opening for the Southern Area for today - due to the heavy snowfall they are currently in the process of making the decision: delay or not open... ---- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa - 260m (official snow depth) Iwappara - 195cm (official snow depth) Kagura - Kagura area: 300cm (official snow depth) - Mitsumata area: 250cm (official snow depth) - Tashiro area: 280cm (official snow depth) - Not updated for a few days Kandatsu Kogen - 220cm (official snow depth) Naeba - 180cm (official snow depth) - Please see our Naeba Now report for daily updates from Naeba NASPA Ski Garden - 260cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Kogen - Top: 230cm (official snow depth) - Base: 150cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Park - 185cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Nakazato - 160cm (official snow depth) ----- Ski resorts in Minamiuonuma - just to the north of Yuzawa: Ishiuchi Maruyama - 250cm (official snow depth) Joetsu Kokusai - 230cm (official snow depth) Maiko Snow Resort - Top: 275cm (official snow depth) - Base: 140cm (official snow depth) Muikamachi Hakkaisan - 240cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Now 2018-2019 season Data as of Saturday 19th January 2019 Total snowfall at base so far 522cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 28 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 50cm (29th December) November 2018 snowfall 2cm reported on 1 day December 2018 snowfall 253cm reported on 13 days January 2019 snowfall 267cm reported on 14 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Monday 21st January 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 35cm Snowfall at base this season 557cm Posted on Monday 21st January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Again we had some rather wet stuff falling later in the day yesterday but we can quickly forget that with a lot of fresh snow piled up on the ground this morning. I have just measured 35cm of it as if 8:45am. Kagura are reporting about 50cm of fresh snowfall. Maiko are reporting 40+cm. This is proper snow country like Yuzawa snowfall. The sudden heavy snow and winds higher up means that the Tashiro Area of Kagura is closed for the day (Kagura open up until the Kagura Number 1 romance lift for the moment). The Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is also closed this morning as they cope with this new snowfall. As far as I can tell other ski resorts are opening but there may be some lifts operating at reduced speed or delayed. There's fresh snowfall on the forecast for large parts of this week so looks like we are in for regular top-ups. • Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 22nd January 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 63cm Snowfall at base this season 620cm Posted on Tuesday 22nd January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Loads of snow! Yesterday evening there was a bit of a break in the snow falling and I went out to measure 33cm of snowfall since my morning report. Wiped the snow off and this morning there's another 30cm on there. So that's an impressive 63cm to report to you this morning. And it is still snowing. The Southern Area of GALA Yuzawa is back open again this morning and it looks like all of Kagura is open too (and other ski resorts of course). There may be some late opening lifts though as they cope with all this snow. There seems to be a chance of some sunshine tomorrow. Take care out there. ----- Oh yes, Kagura are reporting 30-40cm 'until this morning'. And Maiko are reporting 40+cm. Personally I think it'd be cool if they were more specific about the numbers they put out - is it since yesterday morning, or since last night, or since when? But there you go! And we are kind of pleased that our way of keeping a measured record every day through the season is kind of unique (even if it is in town rather than on the ski resorts). But bottom line: there's a lot of snow around right now! ---- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa - 340m (official snow depth) Iwappara - 210cm (official snow depth) Kagura - Kagura area: 300cm (official snow depth) - Mitsumata area: 250cm (official snow depth) - Tashiro area: 280cm (official snow depth) - Note: info not updated for a few days Kandatsu Kogen - 255cm (official snow depth) Naeba - 180cm (official snow depth) - Please see our Naeba Now report for daily updates from Naeba NASPA Ski Garden - 265cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Kogen - Top: 250cm (official snow depth) - Base: 170cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Park - 210cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Nakazato - 180cm (official snow depth) ----- Ski resorts in Minamiuonuma - just to the north of Yuzawa: Ishiuchi Maruyama - 300cm (official snow depth) Joetsu Kokusai - 240cm (official snow depth) Maiko Snow Resort - Top: 320cm (official snow depth) - Base: 160cm (official snow depth) Muikamachi Hakkaisan - 240cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Now 2018-2019 season Data as of Tuesday 22nd January 2019 Total snowfall at base so far 620cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 30 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 63cm (22nd January) November 2018 snowfall 2cm reported on 1 day December 2018 snowfall 253cm reported on 13 days January 2019 snowfall 365cm reported on 16 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Wednesday 23rd January 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 11cm Snowfall at base this season 631cm Posted on Wednesday 23rd January 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. On some days the snow seems to build up quickly almost without you noticing and on others it snows and you are puzzled when there's not as much as you thought. Yesterday was one of the latter - I was surprised that there was only 9cm to clear off the measuring point at 5pm. This morning there was around another 2cm on there, so 11cm in total to report since yesterday morning. This morning has started off with fine mostly clear skies and some sun shining down on Yuzawa but it is already looking like clouds might be starting to move in. Forecasts have us down for some spells of fine sunny weather this morning but just how long it will last remains to be seen. It has been a fairly chilly start to the day but temps are forecast to rise somewhat today - maybe as high as around +6C this afternoon - but it is due to be snowing again by tonight and through tomorrow and it should be once again getting colder. Feels quite windy but all resorts appear to be planning on opening as normal. ---- Ski resorts in Yuzawa: GALA Yuzawa - 350m (official snow depth) Iwappara - 205cm (official snow depth) Kagura - Kagura area: 300cm (official snow depth) - Mitsumata area: 250cm (official snow depth) - Tashiro area: 280cm (official snow depth) - Note: info not updated for a few days Kandatsu Kogen - 255cm (official snow depth) Naeba - 180cm (official snow depth) - Please see our Naeba Now report for daily updates from Naeba NASPA Ski Garden - 300cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Kogen - Top: 250cm (official snow depth) - Base: 170cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Park - 210cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Nakazato - 185cm (official snow depth) ----- Ski resorts in Minamiuonuma - just to the north of Yuzawa: Ishiuchi Maruyama - 300cm (official snow depth) Joetsu Kokusai - 240cm (official snow depth) Maiko Snow Resort - Top: 310cm (official snow depth) - Base: 170cm (official snow depth) Muikamachi Hakkaisan - 240cm (official snow depth) Yuzawa Now 2018-2019 season Data as of Wednesday 23rd January 2019 Total snowfall at base so far 631cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 31 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 63cm (22nd January) November 2018 snowfall 2cm reported on 1 day December 2018 snowfall 253cm reported on 13 days January 2019 snowfall 376cm reported on 17 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa.
