It doesn't feel as cold as yesterday but we have another good amount of fresh snow to report again this morning. I just measured slightly over 16cm since my last report. Forecasts are still looking rather good for largely consistent snowfall across the coming week. I don't think I need many more words this morning. Time to enjoy it! Oh, it looks like Annupuri gondola is not be moving at the start of the day. Other lifts are open as scheduled (not including the top ones of course). I can see a hint of blue sky on the Annupuri webcam over there too right now, but it is still snowing here in Hirafu. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 6am: -5℃, moderate winds, 15cm new snow. Mowia 800m: -9.9℃, NW10.1m/s(gusts to 20m/s from 4am), average snowdrift depth 10m. Mikaeri 800m: -8℃, W5.5m/s, strong winds and snow. Annupuri 1100m: -12.2℃, WNW12m/s, winds increased from 4am. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -11.8℃, N4.0m/s. Hanazono 800m: -9.6℃, NW6.3m/s. Coastal Data: Benkei Cape NW18m/s, Kamui Cape W14m/s, 1014hPa, 2.9m waves. A winter pressure pattern is bringing wind and snow to the sea and mountains. Wind strength varied through yesterday and the snowdrift compaction structure is unstable in some areas. On SE slopes and cornices above 1,000 meters, there is a possibility of a 50cm surface avalanche due to weak layers fracturing. Even if the wind dies down, avoid skiing on open, steep slopes with large elevation changes in the morning. Approximately 20cm of Niseko-style snow with moderate moisture and bounce has accumulated. Observations and data indicate that the overall avalanche risk is low. Avalanches are natural phenomena and can occur at any time if the conditions are right. But if no one gets caught in one, there is no accident. Always be on guard. Discussions regarding gate opening and closing are continuing, but there is still a lack of snow, making rapid rescue operations difficult. Off-piste skiing is at your own risk, but the local community enforces the Niseko Rules out of concern for the safety of visitors. Please understand and respect the rules. Yesterday morning we had a brief spell when snow eased off and it was quite bright - where I was anyway - and then the snow moved in again and it was falling beautifully at times. But it got really windy too and lots of lifts were affected, confining everyone to lower runs. This morning I have 16cm of lovely fresh snow to report to you and cold temperatures. I find it interesting how my observation is actually more than what Hirafu and Hanazono are reporting (even from upper areas). Perhaps that is explained by the windy conditions and the light snow being blown around. It's one of those days when there's more or less depending on where you are. I wouldn't be surprised if there was a fair bit more than that in places. Geeking over numbers aside, there's a good layer to share around and the snow is really nice quality too. It seems like it's going to be less windy this morning, but wind might still be an issue through the day. As of 8:30am, lifts appear to be opening as scheduled. It is still snowing here but seems to be easing off in places - there's even a bit of blue sky appearing at Annupuri. May be temporary. I hope it's not too early to say something like this and not just me wishing it, but it feels more like the Niseko we love. The mountain is still not all open and we need more snow, but I hope we might have reached a turning point and can now get stuck into full-on winter. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 6am: -12℃, 20cm new snow and minor snowdrift development. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -17.3℃, N1.8m/s, increased snowfall. Hanazono 800m: -14.3℃, N3.2m/s. Coastal Data: Benkei Cape NW17m/s, Kamui Cape W13m/s, 1011hPa, 3.2m waves. A typical winter pressure pattern resulted in a blizzard which peaked at 2:00 AM, after which the isobars widened. Winds and snow continued, with an average wind speed of 15 m/s at 1000m. However if the isobars narrow again, expect wind and snow to strengthen. From observation, snowfall trends, and data, it appears that snowdrifts (wind-driven snow slabs) are stabilizing and the avalanche risk is beginning to decrease. However, we need to wait until the wind dies down and the slabs are able to consolidate and stabilise before disturbing them. The snow is excellent, but it is still thin. Be careful of hitting trees along the trails. You can’t beat trees. Patrol is worried about injuries. The slopes are starting to look good. There are a lot of people, so please ski safely. There is no safety in this sport. Please be considerate of others and ski safely. Cutting in line on the lifts calls into question your dignity. Please respect ski resort regulations and the Niseko Rules. It will be a while before the gates are able open. Please listen to the patrol’s advice. It’s cold today. Be careful of frostbite. A proper cold and snowy morning, with a nice layer of fresh snow on the ground and with more incoming. Just how we love it. Hirafu seems to be reporting 40cm of fresh snowfall (both top and base), while Hanazono is reporting 35cm up top and 25cm at base. Annupuri is reporting 20cm across the mountain. My own measurement is 24cm. Those are all good healthy numbers and with it continuing to fall today, we will surely be treated to the best conditions of the season once this blast clears up. Today was the planned opening date of the ski areas on our lovely mountain but there's not enough snow just yet and so they are all delayed. We have had a bit of snow overnight with a thin covering on the ground once again. As with many regions of Japan, some possibly significant snowfall looks due to be with us by the middle of the coming week. It looks very promising. I'll be back in a few days with another update. It won't be long before my 'daily' routine clicks into place! I might just have a long lie-in tomorrow morning. (It has been long gone by now). This morning it is a cloudy, foggy and damp morning. Not very appealing! But if you do venture out, much care needed with non-fluffy spring snow and limited visibility. The King Gondola at Hirafu is not opening as planned; not sure why. Tomorrow should be at least clearer... and colder, too. Sporadic snow here and there still showing on weekly forecasts. We're not getting the full-on spring treatment just yet. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moutain base: +2℃, light rain. Moiwa 800m: -1.0℃, S0.7m/s, no snowfall. Annupuri1100m: +0.3℃, WNW3.8m/s, thick fog and poor visibility. Hirafu Hanazono: +2℃, SSW6.5m/s, thick fog. Coastal data: Benkei capeW3m/s, Kamui cape: calm, 1001hPa, 0.6m waves. Warm air is flowing in under 700m elevation as the low-pressure system passes, but the isobars are widely spaced. Cold air is present in higher elevation, resulting in a thick fog above 800m. Gates are scheduled to open if the fog clears, please follow the ski patrol’s instructions. Avalanche hazard from yesterday’s pre-low pressure snowfall is almost non-existent. However, glide avalanches, like ice avalanches, can occur anytime without a sign. Sudden slides shouldn’t happen if the new snowdrift’s weight is reduced with rain and temperature rise, and the balance between shear strength and stress is even. However, it is still highly recommended to stay away from the bottom (natural halfpipe) of the Kozan-no-Sawa and O-sawa (Backbowl and Annupuri bowl). Glide avalanches are unpredictable. Do not duck ropes and sneak into strictly off-limits areas behind the back of the ski patrollers. I can just about justify another 1cm in this report. Hirafu is reporting up to 5cm (though it should be noted that they do seem to think in units of 5cm, rather than in units of 1cm). But the handful of cm on the mountain is nice to see, albeit far from being a proper reset, of course. There might be some more tomorrow. A mix of cloud, blue sky and sun in places as I prepare this report. There is a wind, too, with all but the base lift at Annupuri on hold. Other lifts all appear to be scheduled to open as normal. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Mountain base: -1℃, light snowfall and frozen. Moiwa 800m: -4.8℃, WNW8.1m/s (20m/s@3am), slight snowfall but cornices have developed with the wind. Annupuri 1100m: -8℃, WNW9.5m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -8.2℃, E3.5m/s, snow surface frozen and firm. Coastal data: Benkei cape NW16m/s, Kamui cape SW14m/s, 1010hPa, 1.7m waves. The atmospheric pressure gradient is steep with the Low on the Okhotsk Sea and a 15+m/s westerly wind is blowing over the Japan Sea and the Niseko mountain range. Snowfall is minimal, but thin and fragile cornices have formed with drifting snow in 800m elevation slopes of the eastern side of the mountain. The wind is forecasted to calm down before noon. Peak gates opening will be delayed. Please follow the patrollers’ instructions. An avalanche caused by a falling cornice occurred on 19th January 1990 and 5 Niseko Jr-highschool students were caught in but eventually rescued. Even when the snowfall amount is small, the wind can carry the snow and make large cornices grow. Beware of newly formed cornices as they’re very fragile and can collapse anytime. And as always, beware of hitting trees and avoid riding the valley bottoms. Glide avalanches can happen on cold days too. Don’t duck ropes! People will mimic and eventually, an unlucky person will pay the price. The mountain is firm on and off piste. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 783cm Good morning from Niseko. It is a lovely morning with lots of blue sky and some friendly looking clouds. The sun is shining through my window. Hanazono actually seems to be reporting up to 8cm of snow on upper areas (and 1cm) at base which is interesting. I think some investigation is required! (My 1cm in this report is from yesterday... it was snowing quite nicely at one point!) OK, so Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu ski area is now closed for the season, and has turned off webcams. Niseko Hanazono, Niseko Village, Niseko Annupuri and Niseko Moiwa all still remain open. ------------------------------------ A look back at the season so far: until the end of March 2025 I can hardly believe that we are already into April. I suppose that is probably always my thoughts when it gets to this part of the season. Cliché alert, but time goes so fast. (I suppose that means I must have been having fun!) At the same time, I have been writing these daily reports for the best part of 5 months now, so that seems like a (very) long time! I'm at that stage where I am still enjoying it all, but also starting to look forward to a proper rest in about a month or so. It's a tradition that I start my recap with important points to keep in mind when reading my data and comments. As a reminder and also for any newcomers who have only recently found these reports. The snowfall numbers I am introducing in these reports are all the snowfall measurements I observed near the base of Hirafu. The monthly and annual numbers in these reports are comparable because they are coming to you from the same spot and being observed by the same person every day over the last 13 seasons. Also, 'Observed snowfall at base' is not the whole story of how the season is going, and it does not take into account the fact that there is often more snow at higher elevations or snow quality. Here are my observed snowfall numbers for March 2025: March 2025: 76cm March 2024: 70cm March 2023: 32cm March 2022: 81cm March 2021: 79cm March 2020: 59cm March 2019: 45cm March 2018: 49cm March 2017: 83cm March 2016: 109cm March 2015: 139cm March 2014: 113cm March 2013: 164cm Snowfall was reported on 15 days in March. We got some quite decent snowfall around mid-month (and also the snowfall for the last day of the month). That provided some very excite time for the people still here to enjoy it. Yey! Overall, the numbers for March were about average for the the last decade or so. And I really can't think of much else to say. Here are the total snowfall numbers for the season so far: 2024/2025 season up to the end of March 2025: 782cm 2023/2024 season up to the end of March 2023: 879cm 2022/2023 season up to the end of March 2022: 1006cm 2021/2022 season up to the end of March 2021: 1135cm 2020/2021 season up to the end of March 2020: 1201cm 2019/2020 season up to the end of March 2019: 718cm 2018/2019 season up to the end of March 2018: 945cm 2017/2018 season up to the end of March 2017: 1247cm 2016/2017 season up to the end of March 2016: 686cm 2015/2016 season up to the end of March 2015: 983cm 2014/2015 season up to the end of March 2014: 1141cm 2013/2014 season up to the end of March 2013: 1150cm 2012/2013 season up to the end of March 2012: 1459cm At the beginning of each season, I always hope that I will get to observe/report over 10m of snow. (Remember: observed at base, not up top). Alas, it was not to be, and that was becoming apparent in January. I doubt we'll get 2+m over the next few weeks. Here's how much snowfall I have recorded during previous seasons in April. The numbers in brackets show the total observed snowfall at the end of the season. April 2024: 5cm (884cm) April 2023: 0cm (1006cm) April 2022: 2cm (1137cm) April 2021: 9cm (1210cm) April 2020: 10cm (728cm) April 2019: 6cm (951cm) April 2018: 13cm (1260cm) April 2017: 0cm (686cm) April 2016: 6cm (989cm) April 2015: 3cm (1144cm) April 2014: 13cm (1163cm) April 2013: 32cm (1491cm) So, we shouldn't expect much more this season. Anything from now through Golden Week in early May is just a fun bonus. All the statistics can be found here and here. Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu ski area is now closed for the season. I usually get to say that in early May, so it feels very odd saying that right at the beginning of April. The official reason for the early closure is that they want to start work on construction work, including the King Number 3 lift. (It will be 'reborn' as a 6-seater high-speed lift in December this year). I recently read that 13,748 people used the Asahigaoka ski area (behind Kutchan Station) this season. That is the largest number of people using that ski area in 15 years. I have mentioned Asahigaoka before in these reports. It is only small and not on the main mountain, but lift tickets are way (way) cheaper than the resorts and it gets nowhere near as busy. Obviously, it doesn't have that expensive resort status 'appeal' (?) - there are no pop-up shops selling posh bags for whiskey there! And you can buy over 10 full one-day tickets at Asahigaoka for the price of one 29 minute early bird ticket at Hanazono just a few km up the road. (It's mad when you think of it like that, right?) Asahigaoka feels more like a flashback to 'normal ski areas' in Japan. Perhaps it is a sign that some visitors are increasingly open to check out other places. (I think that is a good thing. I recommend it). Perhaps more people are getting wary of crowds and everything being very expensive. (Yes, I know some overseas visitors still do not see Niseko as being particularly expensive). Or it could be a sign there are Japanese locals who still want to ski and avoid the expense of the famous destinations. For many, those feel increasingly out of reach. Anyway, I plan to continue posting reports daily until the last ski lifts of the season close. All being well, that will be on Tuesday 6th May. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 8cm Snowfall at base this season 782cm Good morning from Niseko. A nice surprise making for a fine end to the month with 8cm of snow on the ground and colder conditions. At higher elevations, Hirafu is reporting 10cm and Hanazono is reporting 12cm of fresh snowfall. Annupuri is saying up to 7cm. (And Village is, of course, going with its usual 0cm). It is still snowing at higher elevations though struggling down at base areas. I can see a few small patches of blue sky, though it remains mostly cloudy. But, yes... nice! That takes us up to 76cm for the month, and beating the snowfall number from March last season. Yey! I will post my monthly review thingy tomorrow morning. Sun is expected tomorrow, along with warming temperatures again. A big thank you and otsukaresama deshita to the good folks providing the Avalanche Reports, the last one of the season below. And, remember, this is also the last day for operations at Niseko Tokyu Grand Hirafu this season. Anyway, I'm going to go and enjoy this fresh snow! ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa Mountain base -6℃, 10cm new snow, good visibility. Moiwa 800m: -8.6℃, NW10.3m/s, cornice and snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -10.7℃, WNW11.7m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -10.1℃, SSE4.3m/s, 5cm new snow, good visibility. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NW16m/s, Kamui Cape W13m/s, 1024hPa, wave 1.5m. Cold air has come in and winter has returned. Above 800m, 15-30cm snowdrifts have formed slabs on the lee side of ridges. From data evaluation, there is the possibility of up to 40cm surface avalanches on cornice slopes this morning. If the wind drops, peak gates are expected to open. Please respect the patrol’s judgment. The snow is good, but you will still hit the bottom. The risk of full-depth avalanches continues on the open, steep slopes of Osawa, Kozan no Sawa, Higashi-one, Moiwa Bowl, etc. In particular, cracks are beginning to widen on Kozan no Sawa sidewalls and the West Ridge around 1,100m. Avoid going near them. Always use good judgment off the trails and in the mountains. Although it is not mandatory, carrying a beacon is recommended. Having one will increase the chances of saving your life and the lives of your friends. This is the last avalanche information for this season. There is no safety in this sport. It's rather overcast early on this morning though forecasts indicate we may get some sun. Not much wind. Forecasts for Sunday onwards are looking interesting. Heavy rain into Monday along with a lot of wind, and then some snow on upper mountain areas? Sunday is the last day of the ski season at Niseko Hanazono. From Monday, only Niseko Annupuri ski area will remain open. Someone asked about that fabulous 'Johnnie Walker Blue Label Ice Chalet Pop-Up Store & Bar' structure by the Hanazono lifts. Sadly, of course, we can no longer buy posh bags for our bottles of whisky. As far as I know, it's just standing there unused. Like I said before, I think they should have put some toasters in there - luxury ones, of course - and call it 'Toast' for the remainder of the season. Everyone loves toast.
