What's absolutely certain now, with the snow that's due mid week as well, is that Madarao will be getting off to a flying start on Friday. What makes it even better is the decent chance of clear and sunny conditions on Friday. Keep cold and 20cm the night before please. Very exciting times. Madarao Kogen plans to open on Friday 19th December. The resort plans to have the Number 1 lift and Number 2 Quad lifts operating on the first day. As you may have heard, on Saturday night there was a strong earthquake in northern Nagano Prefecture, with areas to the west of where we are - Hakuba in particular - being shaken the most. It was a shindo 4 on the Japanese scale here in Madarao. More than a tremor but nothing that caused any damage at all to the facilities here in Madarao Kogen. Everything has been checked and there's thankfully no damage to report. All remains on course of Madarao Kogen opening 19th December. Not particularly winter like weather of late. The weekend saw some beautiful conditions, to be followed with rain yesterday and today as well. Not much snow around. We all know how quickly it can arrive when it gets going... but not yet. Hopefully more winter-like weather patterns will return next week. And I'll be sure to give you an update! It was over 7 months ago when I posted the last report from last season and here we are with 2014-2015 just around the corner. It has definitely been a mixed bag of weather over the green season, but it's the white season that we're most interested here I'm sure! Madarao Kogen plans to open from Friday 19th December for the 2014-2015 season. By then there will surely be enough snow and everyone will be well up for it... here's to a bumper season. More reports coming in the weeks leading up to the resort opening with news on the new ungroomed course called 'Ninja' that will be added this season. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Well, there is it folks, that was it. The lifts at Madarao Kogen have now stopped for the season. There's still a lot of snow out there and good cover which is a shame but there's no going back now... it'll be December before the resort opens again officially for skiing and snowboarding. It has been a decent season I think. Not as consistent heavy snowfall as last season, but then again that one was probably not the norm. Still, lots of snow and some fine conditions to be had. Spring seemed to arrive sooner than we hoped, as it did in many other regions of Japan as well. Madarao is of course a very pleasant place to visit outside of the snow season. Nice and relatively cool up here in summer when everyone else is sweating it out lower down in the valleys and of course some spectacular scenery on clear days. Thank you for reading the reports. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Good morning and welcome back to the Madarao Now reports for the 2013/2014 season. We are still a few weeks off opening with a planned opening date for the resort of Saturday 14th December. We have had a few 'snow events' but a fair few 'rain events' too! Right now there is some snow remaining on the upper slopes of Madarao but it's mostly melted away from lower areas and base. There's a chance of fresh snow later on tomorrow into Thursday. Two new ungroomed powder courses make their debut at Madarao this season as the resort seems to do all it can to keep powderhounds happy out there. We'll have more news and a weather update a bit nearer to opening. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Madarao Kogen open today for the 13/14 season - well for the weekend anyway with the main full opening planned for next week. Snow is still thin on the ground but there's the Number 1 lift moving for those looking for an early slide with cheap lift passes on offer. Cloudy at the moment but snow is forecast for today and tomorrow before easing off early in the week. I'll keep you up to date with the weather a few times before opening next week. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . The slopes are this morning covered in snow as we got some decent snowfall yesterday. The resort plans to go ahead and open tomorrow and Sunday for their 'pre-open', and as things stand the Number 1 lift will be moving. Lift tickets will be 600 yen tomorrow (Saturday) and 1100 yen on Sunday. Snow is forecast for tonight and over the weekend so hopefully conditions will be good out there. Please note that the resort plans to be closed from Monday to Friday and then re-open officially for the season (every day) from next weekend. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . OK so after the two day pre-open weekend last week, the snow season starts properly in Madarao Kogen from tomorrow, 21st December. The resort is planning to be open - multiple lifts - from tomorrow morning and then open daily through the end of March. No official details as yet on what will actually get opened up. Daily updates will begin from tomorrow. First day of the season proper at Madarao Kogen. 10-15cm of fresh snow overnight as well to help celebrate, though officially base is around 60cm. So not mad deep yet but that's to come. Remember last season when we were getting huge amounts on what seemed like a daily basis for a while. Would be good to get more of that this year. The latest Madarao Now report can be found here . Good morning from a sunny Madarao. And what's more we got 15cm or so of fresh snow overnight as well. Santa did his job, thanks mate! Nice and cold and the sun is out after a cloudier start to the day earlier on. Can't ask for much more than that. (Well, MORE snow is always welcome). Perhaps clearer conditions again tomorrow but more snow is likely before the weekend. Freeride Park is also now open at Madarao. Hopefully the rest of the tree run courses will be open too.
