Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 568cm Posted on Friday 29th April 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . More changes this morning. The Takamagahara Mammoth area decided yesterday in the really-not-nice-weather to finish up for the season. That leaves us just with a 10-20m wide and 600m long course at the Kumanoyu area now remaining open in the Shiga Kogen area - they plan to remain operating until Sunday. Mixed weather conditions are forecast from now until then, the mix being made up of cloud, sun, rain, sleet and wet snow. Funnily enough, there has actually been a bit of snow fall up here overnight and it's trying to snow now too up by Kumanoyu. It's a bit too late now! Foggy too early on. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . This morning as I write this it's an interesting mix of light snowfall and sunshine. Just a slight dusting of snow overnight and I doubt we will see much added to that today. Looks like there's lots of clear skies in surrounding areas this morning, perhaps we will also see further clearing of clouds as the day goes on. Decent snowfall is still on the forecast for Saturday with snow expected Friday and Sunday as well, so hopefully we'll get a lot of fresh for/over the weekend. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Some sunshine early this morning and thin cloud in Shiga Kogen and just a dusting of snow to be seen in places. It is another very cold morning here with lots of crisp frosty sounds as the steady stream of cars arriving go past my window. Snow is forecast for today though later on and it might start off as light snow but tomorrow heavier snow is expected. There's a chance of quite strong winds as well. Snow probably through to Monday, with clearer skies currently forecast on Tuesday and Wednesday. If that happens they should be great days to be here. Let's see what we get over the next few days. Lots of people arriving at the moment so I expect it will be a pretty busy weekend here. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 163cm Posted on Saturday 16th January 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Mixed weather yesterday with a bit of snow but clearing up in the afternoon. Light snow is falling here now and just a few cm of fresh on the ground. It is nice and cold this morning again so conditions that we have are keeping... though what I really want to write about is thick new layers of snow. Might I be able to write about that on Monday? I might just! Forecasts are all still pointing towards a proper dump of snow to be delivered hopefully starting late tomorrow and going through into next week. Prolonged moderate to heavy snowfall - that sounds just about perfect. Before then it might be a mixed bag of cloud, light snow at times and clearer skies. Weather seems very confused, but hopefully will have made up it's mind to be full on winter in just a few days time. O-tanoshi-mi-ni! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 161cm Posted on Friday 15th January 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Snow was falling overnight but it had cleared up by early morning and there was quite a bit of blue sky amongst the clouds. Less so now as I write this and it is mostly cloudy. My friend was last night telling me about how in 1962 there was hardly any snow even by the end of January. But then here in Shiga Kogen we got over 3m of snowfall in not much more than a week. It sounds like a fantastic story and I can imagine people going from moaning about no snow to too much snow in a very short period of time! But could we be on for another similar kind of surprise? The forecast is certainly looking very exciting in terms of snowfall at the end of the weekend and into next week. There sure would be lots of happy people. Not just here in Shiga Kogen but many other regions of Japan that are experiencing much less snow than usual this season so far. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 4cm Snowfall at base this season 158cm Posted on Monday 11th January 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . A happy Monday morning to you from Shiga Kogen where there has been a modest 4cm of snowfall overnight. Light snow has been falling early this morning, though at the moment it is just cloudy and perhaps light snow still falling in some higher areas. Maybe some more snow today though I doubt it will be anything significant. This year so many places are struggling to clock up what you might term 'heavy snowfall', which is not like Japan. Shiga Kogen is not known for record amounts of snowfall even in a good winter - it's more the quality of snow up here that people love. Anyway I see the forecast still tells us nice stories of regular snowfall over the coming week. Hopefully not fairy tales! • Shiga Kogen Now: Saturday 9th January 2016

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 8cm Snowfall at base this season 154cm Posted on Saturday 9th January 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Good morning from Shiga Kogen. '10-30cm' of fresh snow sound good? That is what I am hearing from around the areas this morning on mountain though it was 8cm outside my place where I take my measurements. I might have to get out and try to find that 30cm to see if it is real! It's good quality light snow too so conditions should be pretty good out there this morning. 18 of the 19 ski areas of Shiga Kogen are now at least part open with just the small Kidoike area not open. Large parts of the resorts are now open as well, with mainly steeper slopes that remain closed. From today: - the Higashitateyama Rinkan course is open - the Terakoya quad and top of Higashitateyama access from Takamagahara is available - Hasuike to Giant via the left side of Lake Hotel open - Giant to Hasuike via under-road tunnel is available So things are shaping up, even if they should have been shaping up sometime in December! We are expecting clearer skies later on and maybe tomorrow morning but more snow is due later on Sunday and through the day on Monday; hopefully through into Monday as well. Things are feeling better now! Here's to consistent snowfall this coming week. • Shiga Kogen Now: Friday 8th January 2016

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 9cm Snowfall at base this season 146cm Posted on Friday 8th January 2016 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning from a very sunny Shiga Kogen. The sun?! I thought we are on for more snow. Well, never mind, we did get snow yesterday of course and about 5-10cm being reported around the region. I had the best part of 10cm outside my home. We are expecting more snowfall though from later on today in fact and hopefully into tomorrow as well, and sometime later on in the day on Sunday and Monday. The forecast looks good so we hope it is right. So for those visiting it should be a cold and often snowy weekend, with resorts trying to open up more as the snow arrives. Monday is a holiday in Japan, it is Coming of Age Day, and so it will be busier than a normal Monday. Things are certainly improved this morning, but I would say that the 'Saiko no condition' (best conditions) that I see a resort area proclaiming is taking things considerably too far. If this is best conditions, then.... I'm off somewhere else! I'm happy to say things are 'best conditions' -- when they are! Not before. It comes across as disingenuous to do otherwise, surely. We are far from having best conditions so far. But of course everyone is hoping that this reality will change soon. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Nice big snowflakes. It's so good to see them falling from the sky this morning. I missed them! There's not a huge amount so far but it snowing really nicely at the moment and this should result in a good new layer of snow if it continues. And it should as well, at least through the day today. And hopefully maybe after a break tomorrow morning, sometime tomorrow into Sunday as well. There's more due on Monday as well. So the forecast is in place, now we just need to sign off on the delivery! Everyone will be very happy if this continues. Perhaps even the monkeys down there in the Jigokudani Monkey Park. Actually, I wonder if they like the snow...?! Hopefully I'll be able to bring you a good report tomorrow morning too. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . We got some really nice snow falling yesterday morning along with some at times very windy conditions, but conditions clearer in the afternoon. No new snow overnight (the few I am adding today is from yesterday morning since my report). Lots of cloud around earlier on but it has been clearing and this morning and just now thin cloud in front of some blue skies. The sun is out. The region is forecast generally milder than usual temps over the next few days, hopefully keeping on the better side of 0 up here in Shiga Kogen. Tuesday into Wednesday is when we expect more snow along with a return to more January-like temperatures. Just a few notes on major connections that remain unopen at this time: - the connection between Hasuike and Giant - the connection between Higashitateyama and Takamagahara - the Higashitateyama gondola is operating and you can ride it up and down though the Higashitateyama course is not open Shiga Kogen Now 2015-2016 season Data as of Saturday 2nd January 2016 Total snowfall at base 132cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 22 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 18cm (1st January) November 2015 snowfall 7cm reported on 3 days December 2015 snowfall 105cm reported on 17 days January 2016 snowfall 20cm reported on 2 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Shiga Kogen. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . A very happy new year to you all. And the new year has started off well here in Shiga Kogen, with a 18cm of fresh snow on the ground behind my place this morning. I am hearing from around the areas of up to 30cm falling in places on the mountain overnight which is of course very good to hear. The Kumanoyu resort are now officially this morning declaring themselves as 'fully open' and I expect bit by bit we will see more runs opening for us today with this fresh snow to play in. We're still not drowning in snow here yet of course, but it's a good improvement all the same for New Year the skiers and boarders here. It would be great if we could have a run of days of this kind of fresh snow, but unfortunately it's going to be clearing today and from tomorrow it's still expected to get slightly warmer. Maybe a bit of snow on Sunday night, but after that it is probably going to be Tuesday before the temperatures drop again to more mid-winter levels and we get more snow. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Shiga Kogen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 6cm Snowfall at base this season 94cm Posted on Monday 28th December 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Yesterday we said that today might start with clearer skies. And so it is. It's one of those beautiful clear and very cold mornings after a storm. 16 of the 19 areas of Shiga Kogen are now at least part open. Terakoya is now part open; they have their pair lift operating this morning. Some areas are now almost fully open, like for example Kumanoyu. There is still not enough snow around though for all of the interconnections to be open and so all feels somewhat disconnected still. We need another decent snowfall or two to really take things up into the next gear. The clouds are due to move back over the area and snow is expected to be falling tonight, so fingers crossed. Even if it is not snowing now on a day, the biggest hope is that it keeps cold with snow conditions being preserved.
