It's a beautiful morning and not as cold as it has been. (Still down in the negative numbers of course, though.) There's some more snow since my report, and I'm probably going to be having more to report tomorrow morning as well with clouds moving in later on today bringing more snowfall. Snow due from later today though until around Tuesday and then clearer skies on Wednesday and Thursday. Heavy snow > fine weather > heavy snow > fine weather > = perfect weather cycle if you ask me! The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Once the wind eases off this morning and some of the lifts that are stopped at the moment get going again, it will be excellent conditions again. More fresh snow this morning and strong winds causing problems with quite a few lifts around the areas. Wind has also been blowing the snow around overnight and this morning and so proving difficult to put a number on it. A lot. (Number may be adjusted after further investigations!) Things should be calmer and clearer tomorrow --- before more snow due Sunday night into early week. What a fine season it is turning out to be (so far). In terms of us getting snow here in Shiga Kogen. I like it. It is snowing now but not expected to last much into this afternoon. In fact here in the Hasuike area it feels like it is starting to ease off and visibility is improving already. For those planning on coming Saturday morning. Come prepared for potential heavy snowfall late Friday into Saturday morning. Beyond that there's also regular snowfall on the forecast. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning from Shiga Kogen where we have continued to be pounded by heavy snowfall and it is still falling. I really can't remember having a storm on this scale here, it has been relentless and we have huge amounts of snow piled up on the sides of the road and... pretty much everywhere. By tomorrow morning things should have eased off and there may even be some sunshine. It will be a close to perfect day if that happens and I'm excited just thinking about it now. It just keeps on dumping down huge amounts of snow! I am measuring over 60cm, I am hearing more from other people - wind is probably a factor making it difficult to put a number on it. They'll all big numbers though. And while I keep on posting these big numbers, we can probably expect another big number tomorrow morning too with snow storm conditions continuing into tomorrow. It's really very exciting, if not a little overwhelming. In a good way. Another day when lots of people may decided to just take an onsen rather than brave the conditions. It's a bit wild out there (though perhaps not quite as much as yesterday). Massive. Snowfall at base this season 443cm Posted on Sunday 15th January 2017 This is an archived report. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . The official website this morning is claiming a full 85cm of fresh snow this morning. It's certainly a lot but after going out and doing some measuring and taking into considering the wind which is really blowing about, I'm going with 70cm (*updated). That might well be under-reporting and conservative. I can't remember ever posting such a big number in any of my reports here - and I've been doing them for a fair few years. Locals are talking about a "once in a few years" snow storm. It's definitely a snow storm with the snow really coming down hard and strong winds blowing about. Honestly I'm not sure many people would want to be out on the slopes in these conditions but even if you did, it's limited with the wind stopping quite a lot of lifts this morning. Those 'snow monkeys' have a good plan... onsen! Snow is forecast to continue through today and tomorrow and still be snowing come Tuesday morning. Heavy! This morning it is a mix of white and grey clouds and blue sky - and right now the sun is shining. Another cold start but conditions in the day time are expected to be a bit milder over this weekend and perhaps early week but the snow should be back by Tuesday. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Another happy report for you this morning from Shiga Kogen where we have another solid (at least) 25cm of snow since yesterday. I have spoken to a few people from around different areas, with one (the overly-positive one!) saying 45cm. Bottom line - another decent amount of fresh on the ground. I can't quite believe that a few areas have their official snow depth still stuck on 40cm - Hasuike on 20cm! - but there you go. I suppose it's good that they don't 'over-report', just wish they wouldn't 'under-report' either! I'll try not to go on about that too often, promise. ;) I'm in a good mood and looking forward to some fine skiing today. It's cold out there, extra layers recommended. It's getting busy now for New Year. Conditions should be very good so it will be a happy bunch of people who are here. The forecast predicts calmer, clearer and not as cold conditions for over the New Year, and some good looking snowfall around Tuesday. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning from Shiga Kogen. After the snow of yesterday which continued well after my report (see observed new snowfall!), it's a cracking start to today with blue skies and sunshine. The fresh snow, cold temperatures and fine weather all mean that it should be an excellent day out on the slopes today. I like being able to say that. :) And, more snow is due tonight and there's semi-regular snow lined up on the forecast for the week as well. I'm feeling good about that too. As far as I can tell, all areas of Shiga Kogen are now at least part open and there's only bits here and there that remain closed. It seems just 9 of the lifts across the region are not operating this morning. All good, but let's get them going too! Anyone who has followed my reports in previous seasons will know how conservative the ski hills are here in reporting snow depth. So when there's 40cm of fresh snowfall, for example, often the official snow depths won't budge. My advice is to almost ignore those numbers -- the most important one is how much snow is falling each day. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . The skies cleared up yesterday after the snowy start and this morning we are enjoying fine sunny weather (after a more cloudy start). The news today is that Yokoteyama has part opened and Kumanoyu and Yakebitaiyama have both opened up a bit more course area. Slowly more is opening but we could do with a really 'heavy' snow even to kick things off in style. Could this weekend provide that? It's looking quite promising with snow forecast from tonight in this northern region of Shiga Kogen and through the weekend. Fingers crossed! Areas of Shiga Kogen currently open: Ichinose Family The Number 2 pair A lift is operating with the lower main course area (400m) open. Kumanoyu The Number 2 lifts are operating with a 1300m long run open. Takamagahara Mammoth The Number 2 triple lift and Number 3 pair lift are operating with the lower part of the slopes open. Yakebitaiyama The Number 2 high speed lift and Number 4 pair lifts are operating with the South Course and Karamatsu Course open. Yokoteyama The Number 1 Sky B and Number 2 Sky pair lifts are operating. The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . It's a good morning from Shiga Kogen and after the sun of yesterday we are back to snow falling this morning. I measure 11cm of snow outside my place - and counting, as it is still snowing and actually snowing quite heavily just at the moment. Things may ease off later on and sun is forecast tomorrow morning but it should be snowing again by the end of Friday and over the weekend. (Especially if this continues a bit longer), I would expect more lifts and courses to be open soon. Exciting!
