  • Myoko Now: Tuesday 21st January 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 536cm Posted on Tuesday 21st January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . They said it would snow a lot last night - come to think of it, this writer may have made a similar hint - but only a light dusting overnight. What it is doing out there is hard to tell, with a soupy fog now hanging over everything. No wonder one of the local dishes is kiri shita no soba (under-the-fog soba noodles). I hope that means a change in the weather, namely more snow. We're still low this year, and could use a good blast to fill in the valleys and cover the small trees. In our ongoing demand for good information, there was no official report from the town yesterday, and the Tourist Office website still has never been dated for three areas this entire season... yes, folks, I'm going to appeal to higher powers. So most reports are from yesterday, please add a cm or two. :) Official info: Akakura Kanko: 240cm Akakura Onsen: 200cm Ikenotaira: 130cm Myoko Suginohara: 190cm Seki Onsen: 320cm Myoko Ski Park: 235cm Myoko Kyukamura Runrun 250cm Madarao 200cm Tangram Ski Circus 190cm Myoko Now 2013-2014 season Data as of Tuesday 21st January 2014 Total snowfall at base so far 536cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 29 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 60cm (10th January) November 2013 snowfall 20cm reported on 1 day December 2013 snowfall 219cm reported on 12 days January 2014 snowfall 297cm reported on 16 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Myoko. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 40cm Snowfall at base this season 534cm Posted on Sunday 19th January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Snow. Lots of snow. Not typical Myoko snow either, with cold temperatures making it nice and light. The official reports don't really reflect it yet, but we're seeing about 40cm at the base of Akakan, and it's continuing to fall at a rate of maybe one to two centimeters per hour (yeah!). If you prefer sunny skies, this is not your day; if you like powder snow, get out there! It's mostly calm, too, but there are some big blasts of north winds coming through from time to time that could make a chairlift ride more refreshing.... • Myoko Now: Saturday 18th January 2014

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 35cm Snowfall at base this season 494cm Posted on Saturday 18th January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It's starting out clear and cold this morning, with a beautiful pink sunrise and -9°C on the car thermometer. About 30-40cm of super-light powder fell through the day and into the early evening yesterday. It looked at moments like there could be a lot more, but the really heavy load looks more likely for tonight (and clouds are already forming over the ocean to the north). Good for me, as we'll be climbing today and 40cm of fluffy powder is a lot easier to get through than 70cm of solid Myoko powder. All the official reports below are from yesterday; with reports coming out at nearly 10 in the morning, it's hard to keep things timely. I'm measuring myself here at the base of Akakan, so at least you know how much fresh there is, and you can add to your favorite resort accordingly. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 449cm Posted on Thursday 16th January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . An early report today, because it's a day for a climb in the hills. That means no official snow reports from the town, but we only got a very light dusting of snow overnight. It looks like snow could fall, with gray clouds over the peaks and a freshening wind that's not sure which way it wants to blow (a bit from the west, a bit from the north, the normal flows around the base of Mt. Myoko). Conditions have improved a lot, but we could still use some heavy (or as we say here, normal) snow to fill in the small trees offpiste. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . After some light snow overnight, the snowfall is picking up a lot this morning. The wind is also coming up as well, not so much to worry about lift closures (yet), but it's going to reduce visibility a bit more. A good time for some snow to reset the hill! Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 447cm Posted on Wednesday 15th January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I'll bet the other Now! reports are saying the same thing, but it's cold out there! The car tells me it's -11 (and he's highly reliable). It's made for a very pretty morning, too, with frost on the surface of the snow sparkling in the sun. There are some clouds building up to the east and south (unusually; more often clouds move in from the west and north), and unkai - a sea of clouds - flowing along the valleys from Nagano City. One big development in Myoko this year is the huge growth of international travelers. Which also means the powder is getting tracked out way fast. This has not been a super-heavy snow year, so I wonder if the crowds will continue to be satisfied (it's the first time I've felt like this is a small place, which of course it's not). Great for the hotels and restaurants, of course; almost like going back to the boom years (well, better than that; no one-hour lift waits these days!). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Light snow has been falling through the morning in now-snowy Myoko. It would be great to get enough to really reset the powder, but it looks pretty light at the moment. It's pretty cold as well—at least it will be light new snow! Some interesting changes being reported by the ski areas; I don't know how Akakura Onsen lost 20cm, while Seki Onsen gained 50cm! They're not that far apart... The official reporting has been a bit, um, loose this season (I'd like to say flaky, but I'm too nice to say that). Akakan has been the most consistent, and they do have actual depth gauges on the hill. When in doubt, check with the grand old resort. Fine clear conditions forecast for tomorrow in the region. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata New snowfall at base 40cm Snowfall at base this season 441cm Posted on Monday 13th January 2014 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Well, the wind did shift at the end of the day yesterday, with some pretty heavy snow falling through the night and into the morning. Strong wind during the night meant a lot of drifting snow as well. It's hard to tell how much snow fell, to be honest. It was enough to bury my snowthrower (but that was because it was in a big drift), while the official reports are ridiculously low, except Seki Onsen's 50cm report, and Akakura Onsen's 40. In fact, we never received an official report from the town, and its Japanese-language website has never been fully updated (two areas are still blank!). My rant for the morning: come on guys! In the backcountry, some good snow and winds means a little higher danger level, as cornices build up and snow gets deposited on lee slopes. Keep a good eye on conditions, check out the snowpack and be careful (and have fun!). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Yesterday turned out to be sunny after all that snow. Just a few centimeters of snow overnight here, though Suginohara are reporting up to 30cm higher up since yesterday, and some sun on the hill as we get ready for the next storm cycle to arrive. Looks like some colder temperatures as we enter next week; snow is likely for several days; let's hope it's a lot! First day of the long weekend in Japan so it's going to be a busy one. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Winter has finally officially hit, with a great big snowfall and colder temperatures (like I told many people earlier in the season, when it comes, it really comes here). At least 60cm has fallen since yesterday, and probably even more - considering the conditions as we used the once-trusty snowthrower, which has decided to overheat now that it is really needed. The snowfall tapered off a little this morning, but with luck the heavy dumping will pick up again soon. Nothing much to report yet, though I see that Suginohara are reporting 10cm of fresh, and then a short while later 20cm (and up to 40cm of fresh). Somewhat confusing. But anyway, not much to see this morning either - see the webcam images posted below - but let's hope it keeps going. And going. And going. And going. (And going). More to report tomorrow. Sunny days are nice, but we're still waiting for that really good dump that will set us up for the rest of the season. It should be interesting over the next few days as things warm up (including, I hate to say it, the chance of rain tomorrow), but it's all followed by the possibility of some heavy snow and colder temperatures from Thursday.
