The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I'm a little sheepish about yesterday's report; I wanted to get it out early, and report in the 20cm level. And then it started to come down. Our official poke in the snow, over 24 hours, is 91cm. That includes a lot from yesterday, and it is really coming down now - maybe 3 to 4 cm every hour (it's surprising, given that the snow is not falling that heavily around to the south, such as in Suginohara). It's even worse at my house, which is open to the north; it's calm at base, but blowing hard from the north. Probably the same on slopes open to the north wind (and it is cold today! Meaning very nice snow again). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Just a little extra snow through the day. It looked like sun earlier, but snow is definitely coming in over the top of the mountain now. The snow has settled a lot, which is good; it was really heavy if you happened to head out into the untracked yesterday. Super crowded at the ski resorts, which is nice to see for them.... today seems a little more restrained, but this is the last day of perhaps the best long weekend of the year. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Way more snow than expected today, and it keeps coming. Light, powdery snow (probably the best of the season). Lots of people out to enjoy it, too, with the parking lots filling up, and the access roads clogged with cars unprepared for the worst (don't put your chains on only when you come to a stop... Might want to get those on early, city folk!). Pretty good winds, too, so lots of blowing and drifting snow. As I've noted, my spot for measuring snow depth is pretty well sheltered, so I stand by today's big numbers, even when the ski areas don't add on as much. The total snowpack figure is really close to what they have; what falls in a day will of course settle a lot, but if you're skiing, you've got a lot of depth to play with today! In fact, with more international travelers now renting cars, it's just gotten worse. I refuse to apologize to the idiot who decided it would be OK to block the exit to the bus turnaround at Ikenotaira this morning so he could go over to the rental shop. I hollered that he was blocking buses (and me), and he said I should be polite... Just wait until the local bus drivers "inform" you of your poor decision (you won't understand them, but you'll know they're not at all polite). Follow local rules folks! People do stuff for good reasons, and sometimes that means you have to be like everyone else and park and then walk to the rental shop. Especially when deep, blowing snow means it's really tough just to be driving around. Don't need additional roadblocks by blockheads. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow has stopped, for the moment at least. A pretty dark sky out there, though, reminds us that possibly heavy snow is forecast for tonight. Snow pretty much throughout the day yesterday, and it was nice, snowflakey crystals that make for nice skiing. And it's a three-day weekend, so there are a few more cars in the parking lots, and some short lines for gondolas and main lifts (nothing like the days of the Japan ski boom, for those who can remember amusement park-like waits just to get on lifts....) The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . The snow is back, and it's coming down hard. The sun was/is out at Suginohara, it seems, but it's remained overcast with solid snowfall all morning at the base of Akakan. Pretty strong winds through the night and into the day, and there are some strong gusts with swirling snow from time to time. About 25 cm of fresh at 9am, and it's continuing to come down steadily. There is a wet layer underneath the new snow that is a bit of a concern; it's still wet and apparently bonding well with the new snow, at least at base level. Could be a more dangerous situation higher up where the wet may be ice, and a lot of snow on top could mean easy sliding of the new. Good time to take it a little easy in the backcountry! About 7 centimeters of fresh today, on top of about 30cm of really wet snow. Should be nice out there, but things are going to get weird from tomorrow afternoon, with the freezing level going way up to 2650 meters. Higher than Mt. Myoko. Rain is on the forecast for late Sunday and into Monday, but it's going to be cold right after that. The fast switch from rain to cold could cause an ice layer to form, something to keep in mind next week if you're heading into the backcountry. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Another good day of snow. Light snow. More snow than expected. Again. Pretty good wind overnight, too, which shaped this nice, light snow into kind of amazing waves and dunes around my house (which is open to north winds) less so at base level, where we (and most of the ski areas) are more sheltered from gusts by forests and hills. And it's still snowing pretty heavily, probably coming down at a rate of a few fresh centimeters every hour. Another case from this season of we either get a whole lot, or just a little bit, and definitely more days when we get a lot. Having said this, though, it seems like the ski areas have hardly added anything new to their snow depths, where right here at the base of Akakura Kanko we got a lot, and the total keeps inching up.... So I'm sure some won't believe me, but I'm recording what I found, and it's not what the resorts are reporting! The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Nice and sunny out there today. Yesterday's snow has really settled nicely, so hopefully things are a little more stable off in the backcountry. Just a little more snow fell through the morning yesterday before the snow stopped. I noticed all the neighbors were taking advantage of the break to get things cleared off (and I was up on a roof, too, getting that weight off the building). Could be snow again from tomorrow, perhaps heavy into evening. That freezing line is going to head up over the weekend, though, so even rain might fall on the resort if the freezing does in fact go up to 2100 meters. I hope not... The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Back to snow that exceeds expectations: I seem to remember the forecast was for 20 to 40cm, we got 56cm. It has really been coming down since last night. The sun has threatened to come out occasionally, but as I tap away here now we're back to a vision-diminishing steady fall. And it sometimes is falling horizontally as well, as we have some pretty strong winds at times. It's dense snow as well; it was a pretty good slog out to the measuring spot, even with a trusty shovel in hand. I can happily say, though, that the windows around the house are now clear so I am no longer living in a dark cave.... For those going offpiste, it's going to likewise be a hard climb and probably a very slow descent. It's also increasingly risky, with some areas wind-scoured and now potentially covered with dense, wind-loaded snow. The Japan Avalanche Network is now warning of extreme avalanche danger in Myoko. Please be especially careful until the snow settles and conditions improve.
