It's still falling nicely, so hopefully we'll have a few more centimeters on top of what we got from yesterday. Not a huge fall but pretty nice. Enough to get me up early for the usual mechanized throwing of snow. Running a little late today; actually had a fun evening out locally at our neighborhood izakaya, where the clever owner built an amazing customizable set of acrylic walls to give us the viral protection we need (especially when things get loud, as often happens in this kind of setting). Can't say things are normal, but at least there are some safe places where you can still do sort of normal stuff here. Well, the ski fields are always there and viral-killing cold, right? Beautiful day of light and shadows, with blue skies and drifting clouds. Very dramatic dark and light scenes, with sparkling snow below (and a little fresh overnight). Nice day for some sliding, and more snow should be on the way, too. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Man, it was warm yesterday; then, in the late afternoon, the fog rolled in as it got colder, and now snow is falling. Not a lot, and it's made up of little tiny crystals. It's enough, though, that the branches are starting to get white here at the base (could be more up high, if the usual trends hold). It's getting pretty thin out there for a lot of places. Still not sure on Seki Onsen; they're not reported in the city's official page, and they haven't updated their figures and they were closed for a few days. Call ahead, I guess! Kurohime is reporting, but it's wait and see there. Nice if we got one more dump of 30+cm and everybody could open at least one more time. There's really only two weeks left on the official calendar for most resorts, but hate to see closings now. I was hoping the snowplows would wake me up way early this morning (and I thought that, with the low snow this season, the plow drivers would be ready to go no matter how low the snowfall). But, apparently, there are minimums to be observed, and 13cm was not enough to send the diesel beasts out to scrape the asphalt. It may not be much, but it is beautiful snow. Had to pull the loupe out for a close look, and today we have absolutely perfect snowflakes. Christmas-card quality, tiny six-armed stars (and some not so tiny). Too bad there wasn't about 60cm of this; it would be perfect fluffy powder snow. But we're thankful for whatever we can get this season, and it feels like any snowfall could be the last. So I'm out now to test the performance of those flakes.... We have even had a sprinkling of snow on the mountain... always an exciting thing to see. Still, the ski season is a while away yet. The planned opening date for Madarao is Saturday 13th December. (That feels a little earlier than usual --- let's hope they can make it!) The connecting Tangram Ski Circus is aiming for a 20th December opening. I'll keep you updated with snowy news before then. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I am sorry to be late today, but there are stories to be told when the snow is this deep.... Basically it was vehicular mayhem out there on the road up to Akakura. Your reporter pulled six (6) cars up the road with his front loader when they reached that point right near where I am sitting where the road turns a little steeper. Seems the problem was that the prefectural road, which is less steep, was not plowed, so the drivers, many in two-wheel-drive vehicles, had to come up the direct road. And got stuck. But the lifts were slow to open, too. And it's still snowing. And another close-on record snowfall. I had a second person poke the snow, just to confirm and we will stand by our number. (Although there was some drifting as well, even though we're in a generally sheltered spot). Just a little too much good stuff, but we sure are glad to see the snow and the coverage both for the resorts and outside as well. More to come. While there hasn't been much, it looks like there could be a lot. Anyone for another meter added to the base? Of course a lot of new snow will mean a higher risk of avalanches offpiste, and in Myoko that often means sluffs ending up in steep valleys (so be careful where you ride, and where you could end up!). The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . A cold, mostly clear morning today after yesterdays' monster snow. The snow is sparkly and beautiful. Good decision, people who decided to take Monday off for a four-day weekend. I found it kind of interesting that, while we actually under-reported what we found yesterday (knowing that we did have some blowing), the ski resorts almost uniformly under-report on big snow days. And they over-report on low days. I guess they might not want to scare away the recreational skiers, but this is the time of powder, right? Anyway, we promise to be honest. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . Pounded with snow today. A real Myoko day! Lots of snow, lots of wind. This is the first day where we can really say it could be pretty dangerous outside the resort, with deep, unsettled snow and wind loading in places. And it will be incredibly tough getting up the hill, too (which will keep many away). Kind of funny reports on the total snowfall from the resorts (and I think sometimes the resorts may understate the total, to not scare away the course skier who's not interested in thigh-high powder). Seki reported new snow of 150cm, which would have meant the depth before this storm was 80cm (and that's not what they were reporting!). And, for some reason, Lotte Arai gave a new snow depth of 5cm, while the total pack went way up. The good news is, regardless of what the "official" reports are saying, we know there's lots of new snow, and your reporters here in Myoko went out there, poked in the snow, and can honestly state that we found 105cm. Really. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . More snow again, as it looks very much like Myoko should. The snow has tapered off, and some fog has rolled in as the report goes up. The freezing level is supposed to go up today a bit before going way down tomorrow, and lots of snow is predicted. We are excited. Should be a lot of fun today, and more so as the week goes on. In the backcountry, there still is a lot of brush and small trees (and vines) in a lot of places, and particularly high up. A few days ago there was some trouble with the snow breaking on an ice layer down 50-60cm or so when people were offpiste on steep slopes; haven't heard anything today but I see some local testers heading out to probe around. Will let you know what they find. I have also removed the individual lift information from each resort; all the main lifts are going (and many that are shown as not operating never do get used anyway!). If there are closures, I will add those to the individual resort reports. But I think I can say that the season is now officially on and we're back to somewhat normal (OK, not really, but the skiing is, as always, fun).
