  • Niseko Now: Tuesday 11th November 2025

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 3cm Snowfall at base this season 8cm And another pre-season report to let you know about another light amount of snowfall down to base. And it is snowing lightly right now. Even if this snow (also) disappears, as it may well do, it counts! It is still snow. My last report mistakenly appeared for a short time in the Nozawa Now report section... and a few of you noticed! Doh! Sorry about that. And thank you to the people who pointed out the error. Obviously we are not in the swing of things yet and it will take a while to get used to the routines. Let's gambarimasu to avoid mistaking! (Clearly, I have not yet filled up enough on toast. I'll get right to work on that now.) • Nozawa Now: Sunday 31st January 2021

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 13cm Snowfall at base this season 542cm Posted on Sunday 31st January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Well yesterday we got some sunshine in the afternoon and increasingly blue skies up there. Made for a fine day on the slopes especially with that new snow. This morning there's not a massive amount of new snow, around 10cm down at base areas, though interestingly the resort is reporting 26cm at Uenotaira (since yesterday morning) and 12cm on Yamabiko... It is snowing at the moment but likely to ease off as the day goes on. Maybe we might get some clearer skies again like yesterday? Sun from the get go is forecast for tomorrow, before more snow on Tuesday. Fresh snowfall recorded by the resort (since yesterday afternoon): - Yamabiko (1407m): 12cm - Uenotaira (1230m): 26cm - Hikage (660m): 11cm - Nagasaka (615m): 12cm - Karasawa (563m): 6cm Nozawa Now 2020-2021 season Data as of Sunday 31st January 2021 Total snowfall at base 542cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 27 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 56cm (17th December) November 2020 snowfall 0cm December 2020 snowfall 290cm reported on 12 days January 2021 snowfall 252cm reported on 15 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Nozawa Onsen. • Nozawa Now: Saturday 30th January 2021

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 37cm Snowfall at base this season 529cm Posted on Saturday 30th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. It took a while to get started (resort reported 1cm by lunchtime), but we have a very good layer of snow this morning. Perhaps not top-draw quality, but don't take that as a complaint. Looks good to me. The resort itself is reporting 36cm on the base Hikage and Nagasaka areas and 46cm on the upper Uenotaira and Yamabiko areas. I can indeed report 35-40cm of fresh snow. A very welcome Nozawa-like layer of snow along with cold temperatures... back to mid-winter! As I write this there are actually a few breaks in the cloud and the snow has eased off down here at base, though still falling on the mountain, and we are likely to see more snow through the day. Probably just light rather than anything major. Wind doesn't seem to be much of an issue this morning. So it should be a good day. Come Monday we might get some sunshine. Fresh snowfall recorded by the resort (since yesterday afternoon): - Yamabiko (1407m): 46cm - Uenotaira (1230m): 46cm - Hikage (660m): 36cm - Nagasaka (615m): 36cm - Karasawa (563m): 20cm Nozawa Now 2020-2021 season Data as of Saturday 30th January 2021 Total snowfall at base 520cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 26 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 56cm (17th December) November 2020 snowfall 0cm December 2020 snowfall 290cm reported on 12 days January 2021 snowfall 230cm reported on 14 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Nozawa Onsen. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 12cm Snowfall at base this season 492cm Posted on Wednesday 20th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning and welcome to the Nozawa Now report for the day, though actually I am writing this from... Hakuba! You might have heard of it. It's quite nice, I suppose. ;) But anyway, I am here after a phone call with a friend who tells me there's about 12cm of snow to report (resort is reporting up to 15cm in upper areas since yesterday afternoon) and a cloudy morning, with light snow lingering higher up. Looks like there's limited visibility on the mountain, pretty good down towards base. There's not much wind today and it is a cold start. We might get to see sunshine later on... and tomorrow too when it is going to be noticeably warmer. Not sure on the status of Kamoshika course today - the official site has it as both open and closed in different places. I'm pretty sure that one of those will be correct. Fresh snowfall recorded by the resort (since yesterday afternoon): - Yamabiko (1407m): 15cm - Uenotaira (1230m): 10cm - Hikage (660m): 5cm - Nagasaka (615m): 5cm - Karasawa (563m): 0cm Nozawa Now 2020-2021 season Data as of Wednesday 20th January 2021 Total snowfall at base 492cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 25 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 56cm (17th December) November 2020 snowfall 0cm December 2020 snowfall 290cm reported on 12 days January 2021 snowfall 202cm reported on 13 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Nozawa Onsen. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . By early afternoon yesterday it had started to snow down to Hikage - Naski had a dusting of snow on his/her head - even though it was raining below that level. And this morning we have 5-20cm of snow being reported from base to top by the resort. So a modest layer of snow out there this morning. Right now it is just cloudy (and light snow being reported from the top Yamabiko area of the resort, by the resort, at 8:20am). We are just basically expecting a cloudy day today and perhaps an increased chance of sunny skies tomorrow. Next potentially decent snow around Tuesday, perhaps. Fresh snowfall recorded by the resort (since yesterday morning): - Yamabiko (1407m): 9cm - Uenotaira (1230m): 20cm - Hikage (660m): 12cm - Nagasaka (615m): 12cm - Karasawa (563m): 5cm Official snow depth numbers (reported by the ski area): - Yamabiko (1407m): 225cm - Uenotaira (1230m): 220cm - Hikage (660m): 170cm - Nagasaka (615m): 155cm - Karasawa (563m): 130cm All courses apart from the following plan to be open: - Challenge 39 (conflicting info out there about availability) - Yunomine A - Grand Prix Ski lift information: - The following lifts are normally rested on weekdays: - Utopia pair, Challenge pair, Yunomine pair and Mizunashi triple - The Shinyu pair lift will be closed for the remainder of the season due to obstruction by fallen tree Nozawa Now 2020-2021 season Data as of Tuesday 19th January 2021 Total snowfall at base 480cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 24 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 56cm (17th December) November 2020 snowfall 0cm December 2020 snowfall 290cm reported on 12 days January 2021 snowfall 190cm reported on 12 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Nozawa Onsen. • Nozawa Now: Monday 11th January 2021

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 17cm Snowfall at base this season 450cm Posted on Monday 11th January 2021 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Snow clouds have remain but there are already signs that it will ease off this morning and there might be clearer conditions. It's been covered with cloud again now but a few moments ago I saw some blue sky. It feels kind of bright down here. Visibility remains limited on the upper areas of the mountain this morning. So we'll just have to see how things develop in the coming hours but I wouldn't expect much snow in terms of cm before tomorrow. Sunshine on Wednesday? That would be really cool actually. As long as there's snow on the other side and it doesn't warm up much, of course. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Morning from Nozawa. There's not a whole lot to report this morning, but I'm just excited about opening tomorrow. It doesn't look like there has been any fresh snow on the mountain though perhaps a slight dusting at the top. Opening remains planned for tomorrow with a Yamabiko course and the Uenotaira course scheduled to be available. We might get rained on tomorrow morning which would be a bit annoying, with some chance of sun to start off Sunday... and then... snow! The week from Monday (late on Sunday?) is looking set to be snowy. Hopefully very snowy. Nozawa-like in it's snowy-ness, even. Now wouldn't that be fantastic. The 2km Uenotaira cross country course will also be opening from tomorrow. Yey! • Nozawa Now: Tuesday 10th November 2020

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 0cm Posted on Tuesday 10th November 2020 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . After a 6+ month break, I'm back and all recharged and excited about the upcoming 2020-2021 winter season. Last season was, of course, by no means a classic. We didn't get as much snow as we usually get - both here in Nozawa and in most regions of Japan - and then the covid-19 situation developed. To say that it has been a difficult year for many people is something an understatement. I don't want to dwell on that much here, but I hope the year has treated you ok. Even in tough times though, my Nozawa friends mostly remain genki and in good spirits and looking forward to welcoming people to their village. I know that some (or indeed many) of you reading this were hoping to visit Nozawa this winter but will be unable to do so, due to the ongoing travel restrictions. And I feel sorry about that. I will be here every day once the season begins and so hope that you might be interested to see how this season goes... and will be able to come next year. For those of you who will be able to get here and enjoy Nozawa this winter: it remains to be seen how the season shapes up, but I think most people are expecting a quieter season than usual. Of course, we all hope for at least normal amounts of snowfall this season. A season of consistent and heavy snowfall would really be a nice way to end 2020 and start off 2021. The big ski area news here this season is the brand new Gondola lift. The ski area has cunningly named it 'New Nagasaka Gondola' and replaces the old one. If you remember, the old gondola had a mid-station and change in direction. The new gondola is all nice and shiny with big windows and it goes straight up from the Nagasaka base area to the upper Yamabiko area of the resort (similar end point as the old gondola). It will be exciting to get a first ride on that new lift - it should be making its debut on the opening day of the season. Getting on to weather matters. It is still early, but there have been encouraging signs. It has been rather chilly of late and this morning I can see snow. The top areas of the resort have a thin white coating this morning and there has been a dusting of snow down to fairly close to base areas. More sunny skies are due from Thursday and into next week, so this snow will disappear before more comes. Remember, it is early! Nozawa Onsen plans to open for the season on Saturday 12th December 2020. That is actually somewhat later than usual, but hopefully by the time that date rolls around we'll have a good base to play with. I'll be back from time to time in the run up to the season; my reports will go daily once the season begins. Take care and see you soon. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. It may be 10th April but it is snowing and the lower slopes of Nozawa Onsen once again are looking white. The resort is reporting 8cm on the upper slopes. I just went out and measured 3cm and it is actually coming down in an almost winter-like fashion right now. The forecast tells us that it should ease off fairly quickly this morning with sunshine expected over the weekend. Nozawa Onsen remains open despite the coronavirus situation (and some other high profile season-ending resort closings because of it). No doubt we all have our own opinions on that, but I will of course continue to post until the ski area closes. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 1cm Posted on Thursday 21st November 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa. Sadly, I have to bring you the rather inevitable news of a delayed opening this morning. Yes, Nozawa isn't going to be able to open on Saturday as planned, so they are now into 'stand-by' mode and will open as soon as there is enough snow. Yesterday at 10am they were reporting 10cm of snow on the upper Yamabiko area. Good to see a thin sprinkling of snow lower down though and there are spots of rain this morning. It's a rather thick and foggy/cloudy kind of morning. Over the weekend some milder temps are forecast and there's more of a chance of rain than snow even higher up if the forecasts are correct. So think that the delay in opening will be for at least a week... • Nozawa Now: Tuesday 30th April 2019

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Nozawa Onsen region of Nagano New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 886cm Posted on Tuesday 30th April 2019 This is an archived report. The latest Nozawa Now report can be found here . Good morning from Nozawa on this last day of April. And it is a big day for Japan as the Emperor makes way for his son and then tomorrow we enter the new Reiwa Era. The weather isn't particularly appealing though - it's raining.
