The snow around base and lower areas has been noticeably disappearing with spring warmth taking hold yesterday. Even so, you can still actually slide back down to base at Happo-one, 47 and Goryu. Obviously the best snow cover is higher up on the mountain. Only the upper area of Tsugaike Kogen remains open so you'll need to ride the gondola back down to base over there. If the forecasts are correct we might get some snow on the mountain overnight tonight (and overnight tomorrow night?). It will be a warm day today, colder tomorrow. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. Out the sun is! It is a lovely morning. Less cloud than yesterday morning but we are on for another fine spring day. But the huge news to report this morning is that yesterday was the last day of the season for Hakuba Happo-one. It is now closed. I will let them explain in their own words: "With regard to the infectious disease caused by the New Coronavirus (COVID-19), we request the cooperation of our customers to assist in the prevention and spread of COVID-19. We will take the following measures to ensure the health and safety of our guests, employees and community. Happo-one Ski Resort will close this season’s ski operation on Wednesday 8th April 2020. An announcement from the Japanese Government declared a state of emergency concerning the rapid spread of the new coronavirus infection. There are many guests visiting our ski resort from wider areas such as Tokyo, Kanagawa, Chiba, Saitama, Osaka, Hyogo, etc. Based on a revision of existing legislation in relation to influenza and infectious disease, a law has been enacted and The Prime Minister has declared a state of emergency. The closure of the ski resort will be effective immediately from tomorrow Wednesday 8th April 2020." Also, Tsugaike Kogen have announced that they will be closed at the end of today. So today (Wednesday) is the last day of the Tsugaike Kogen season. Here is their message, complete with official use of the word 'bummed' (!): "Unfortunately, due to Prime Minister Abe's State of Emergency Declaration last night, Tsugaike has decided, out of an abundance of caution, to close the resort for the season as of tomorrow. As such, today, Wednesday April 8th, is the last day of operation for both the ski resort, and the ropeway for accessing backcountry terrain. We are just as bummed as anyone else, but these are unprecedented times that are being met with unprecedented measures. Thanks to everyone who came out this season, and we look forward to when things return to normal and the snows begin to fall again next season." Even with the declaration from Tokyo yesterday, I was not expecting that. No doubt people have varying opinions on the subject but... those are big decisions. I have not heard of any ski area in Japan closing for this reason yet - perhaps Happo-one is the first to do this (updated: Tsugaike too); certainly there is a good chance that it is the first major one to do so. As far as I can tell, Hakuba Goryu and Hakuba 47 currently remain open. So after that big news yesterday, Tsugaike Kogen is also now closed and we are left with just Hakuba 47 and Hakuba Goryu remaining open in the area. Please check out yesterdays report if you missed it. Hakuba 47 and Hakuba Goryu seem intent to continue as planned, for the moment anyway. I will let you know of any changes. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. It's snowing. (Of course it is!) It shouldn't last for long but there's 2-3cm of snow at resort base areas, more of a dusting in some areas around the village. Clearer skies are due later... and tomorrow. Earlier this week, Hakuba Happo-one and Tsugaike Kogen both closed for the season within a day of the 'state of emergency' being announced by the Japanese government for Tokyo and six other regions of the country. I was wondering how the two remaining ski resorts would react, and yesterday we found out. Hakuba 47 made clear of their intention to remain open - at least for the time being. They made various reassurances about offering hand sanitizer, staff wearing masks, keeping windows open, limiting the number of people in each gondola cabin, etc. So for the moment, Hakuba 47 (almost fully open) and Hakuba Goryu (top area and the narrow Toomi run open) remain in operation. Over the last few days I have heard many opinions from friends and acquaintances; opinions from people both here in Hakuba and elsewhere. As Happo-one noted, many visitors to Hakuba come from the very same places that are currently being asked to 'stay at home'. I have my own opinions on all of this, of course, though as always I would very much prefer to remain out of politics. I am going to continue to document the season for as long as it continues. I plan to post a few weather updates each week. Please accept my apologies, but it just feels like it is the right thing to do. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. I wasn't planning on a report this morning, but I have important news. Today is going to be the last day of the season for Hakuba 47 and Hakuba Goryu. They are saying that with the snow on the slopes down to base getting thin on the ground, narrow and close to closing, people would be needing to get the gondola lifts back down to base. Increased congestion due to people waiting for the gondola is not ideal. Some may well be disappointed. Some are happy and relieved to hear that decision being made. So, this all means that today is officially the last day of the season here in Hakuba. It also means that my reporting is also effectively over for the season. Here's a final message to end the season. ----- Today is the last day of the season for Hakuba 47 and Hakuba Goryu. From tomorrow, no ski areas in the region will be open. Yesterday I spent some time writing lots of words as a season wrap-up. But I have decided to scrap that. I have written billions of words since November in my reports. Well, maybe not quite so many. They are all there. You can go read them at any time. They tell the story of the season. So I am going to make this last post relatively short. What a season it has been. Alas, it has not been the amazing season that we all yearn for and has been punctuated by two major things going on - the low levels of snowfall and then the coronavirus. From the viewpoint of covering the season by writing these reports in a morning morning, it feels like it has been an ongoing struggle throughout the season. I imagine more than a few other people involved have similar feelings. So let me just say a big thank you and well done to all of the people working at the ski areas and related services and dealing with everything. I hope that you can get to have a rest. Taking a look at the official snowfall data. Happo-one reported over 8m of snowfall and the other resorts reported around 6m of snowfall on their upper slopes. It has not been as consistent as we would have liked, but I have been able to enjoy some great days on the mountain. There have been periods of excellent conditions. I hope that if you did get to visit Hakuba this season you were able to enjoy good timing in terms of snow conditions and that you could enjoy getting to know this lovely place. As always, there was much more snow on the mountain than down in base areas. But this year there was clearly less than we expect and some lower slopes have been really struggling throughout the season. The snowfall situation has not been just a Hakuba thing - it has been a most-of-Japan thing. Everyone is hopeful that this season was just strangely abnormal and that we can get back to more like what we expect for 2020-2021. And then came coronavirus. The first thing we noticed was a decrease in visitors from overseas around the Chinese New Year period. And then it just got more of a thing, leading up to the early closures of Happo-one and then the other ski areas a few days ago. It is going to feel odd to not be writing Hakuba Now reports right through until the end of Golden Week in early May. But sadly, not much feels normal right now. Some things do remain constant though: - the stunning beauty of Hakuba - the very fine people of Hakuba - Japan is ace Like everyone else, I am so much looking forward to hearing brighter news regarding the virus and then hopefully we can have a normal 2020-2021 season with consistent snow and lots of happy smiles. I can report 5cm so far (and counting) and this is what the ski resorts themselves are reporting... 10-15cm at 47 and Happo-one. ...so it sounds like there should be a decent layer up there this morning - with more falling now and associated limited visibility. The top Happo-one Grat quad and Kurobishi pair lifts appear to be on hold at the time of writing due to wind. The sun should be back tomorrow. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . Good morning from Hakuba. A very good one it is - the first day of the ski season, in fact! Our mountains have been blessed with some good snowfall over the last few days and it's good to see patrol walking knee deep in snow. That's what we like to see. Snowfall headlines, from the ski resorts themselves, as I have them: Happo-one: yesterday saying 60cm of fresh snowfall, presumably high up; this morning saying 'snow depth' of 20cm at top of gondola; reporting 10cm of new snowfall on official site Hakuba Goryu: reporting 15cm of fresh snowfall and 50cm of snow depth on upper slopes Hakuba 47: reporting 10-15cm of fresh snowfall and 80cm snow depth on upper slopes. Yesterday there were showing a ruler of 50cm of fresh snowfall Those three ski resorts are part open from today - details outlined below. I can't find any official word just yet from Tsugaike Kogen... Light snow falling early morning but the snow is easing off - there's even signs that the sun might even break through in places, maybe not - but we are expecting a generally cloudy day. Enjoy! Regarding snowfall numbers: You can very easily get lost chasing numbers. Even a keen observer like myself can sometimes get confused and at times I need to process what seem to be sometimes conflicting reports (official numbers which can be vague; social media posts by the resorts etc). And of course, as we know - and as I mention in almost every single report I post - more snow falls higher up on the mountain than falls at base areas. So for 'mountain numbers', the best I can do is report what the ski resorts themselves say as well as add in any personal notes from when I go out myself. As something of an experiment, I am for now going to be adding the 'new snowfall' numbers reported by resorts, where available, in the data below. We'll see how that works. The latest Hakuba Now report can be found here . That first layer of snow down to the village is always a lovely sight. With a bit of a warmer day forecast tomorrow, the current thin layer may well disappear before the winter weather properly sets in, but that is not uncommon. A look around the webcams shows snow on all of them, though not enough for the big resorts to open yet. Fingers crossed we'll get back to snow in the first half of the coming week. Hope you have a good Saturday. In the coming days, it is going to be become more prominent on the report, but please be sure to read this. What is laid out on that page applies not only to Hakuba Now but to all of the other Now daily reports on SnowJapan. As I have mentioned before, this season myself and my little (actually, not so little!) helpers are going to be taking more time to gather information in a morning before posting the report. That might mean the report being a bit later than it has been in the past, as we have no control over information that is being put out there by resorts, etc. And as ski resorts are not yet open, no-one is into their proper daily routine yet. Wind affected top lifts at Happo-one yesterday and unfortunately it looks like the same is happening this morning (with just the Panorama course available at the start of the day today). Just want to add it doesn't feel particularly windy down in the village. Those windy conditions yesterday won't have helped the remaining snow and it is getting thinner pretty much in all areas now - though still good cover on upper areas that remain open. That really is good going for early May. We now have just over 3 days left to go - gambare, ski-jo staff! Anyway this morning it is sunny, we have blue skies (thin cloud in places) and good clear weather is expected from today through Sunday and getting somewhat warmer (up to and around 20C).
