  • Yuzawa Now: Saturday 14th February 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 30cm Snowfall at base this season 1140cm Posted on Saturday 14th February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Ah yes, I like it when I can report 30cm of fresh snow in a morning. And that's about what we got this morning with 'the resorts that report' and the snow on the top of my car all saying the same this morning... a good foot of fresh snow. It was snowing quite heavily in the afternoon in particular yesterday and Yuzawa felt bustling. Feels like it is going to be a busy weekend. Folks who are looking for the deep fresh will be happy, families looking for a gentler sunny day less so. The snowfall is set to continue through all of today and perhaps into tomorrow as well though there's a chance it will be easing off tomorrow. --- There's a wind too this morning and it's playing with plans up at Kagura. Going to be another day off for the Tashiro Ropeway unfortunately and Kagura will be open from Mitsumata Ropeway just to the Mitsumata Number 2 Romance lift to start with... they'll be trying to get the Kagura Gondola and quad going if conditions allow. --- Already hearing news of a 'season extension' due to the large amount of snow this season. NASPA Ski Garden near the town centre were planning on being open until Sunday 5th April, but they have announced that they'll be moving the lifts on the following two weekends as well (11th, 12th; 18th, 19th). We can perhaps expect some other such news in the coming weeks. Still really early though, a long way to go. --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 450cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 380cm Iwappara: 265cm Joetsu Kokusai: 290cm Kagura: 350cm Kandatsu Kogen: 380cm Maiko Snow Resort: 390cm (upper) 290cm (lower) Naeba: 270cm NASPA Ski Garden: 357cm Yuzawa Kogen: 360cm (Kogen) 310cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 245cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Saturday 14th February 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 1140cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 49 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 420cm reported on 22 days February 2015 snowfall 161cm reported on 11 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Sunday 15th February 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 25cm Snowfall at base this season 1165cm Posted on Sunday 15th February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Morning from Yuzawa and apart from a surprise hour or so of some blue skies and sun mid-morning, it was snow for most of the day. It didn't get particularly cold - especially out of any wind which wasn't significant lower down - and today should probably be the same, with the temperature around 0 degrees here at town level. There was about 10cm of snow on the car during the day yesterday, and this morning there's another 12cm to add to that. I see that Kagura this morning are reporting an impressive 60cm! (Though unfortunately windy conditions are going to prevent the Tashiro area from opening today again and Mitsumata will at first just be up to Kagura Number 1 pair lift. Tomorrow should be amazing up there with so much fresh untouched snow). Conditions should be pretty great everywhere though. Check out the snow depth numbers coming from GALA Yuzawa as well... currently 470cm. Snowfall expected to ease today - this afternoon perhaps - and tomorrow we might get to see some sunshine break out from the clouds over Yuzawa. --- One bit of news that I have just noticed - Kandatsu Kogen is going to be closed today. This is due to an avalanche that apparently happened actually outside of the ski resort area, but as a matter of safety they won't be opening today. UPDATE EVENING: Safety has been checked and Kandatsu Kogen will be open again as normal from tomorrow, Monday 16th. --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 470cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 410cm Iwappara: 280cm Joetsu Kokusai: 290cm Kagura: 370cm Kandatsu Kogen: 380cm Maiko Snow Resort: 390cm (upper) 290cm (lower) Naeba: 270cm NASPA Ski Garden: 357cm Yuzawa Kogen: 360cm (Kogen) 310cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 255cm --- Nighta in the area Nighta 'night skiing' - where some slopes are floodlit for skiing and snowboarding in the evening - is available at the following resorts in the area. • Yuzawa Now: Monday 16th February 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 15cm Snowfall at base this season 1180cm Posted on Monday 16th February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Morning from Yuzawa and it's a much calmer start to the day today. Snow through most of the day yesterday, along with some strong winds as well. There was a part clearing of the clouds mid afternoon for a short time but it wasn't long lived with snow and wind suddenly back. Conditions eased during by late evening and there was no new snowfall since last night, though I see Kagura is reporting 10cm. There was another 15cm of snow during the day though, so that is what I'm logging for the report. Strong winds yesterday made for calling the numbers different! So this morning is calmer and while there is a lot of cloud around there's also some blue sky here and there. Forecast says to expect more of that and maybe some sunny conditions later in the day which should be quite mild with temps in low positive numbers. Cloud tomorrow, with more snow forecast for Wednesday and Thursday. Kandatsu Kogen is open again today after being closed yesterday due to an avalanche. Safety confirmed and all back to normal now. All of Kagura should be open as normal as well this morning. Conditions are going to be superb up there with no-one playing in the all that snow over the weekend. In fact it should be great everywhere! --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 490cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 390cm Iwappara: 280cm Joetsu Kokusai: 290cm Kagura: 370cm Kandatsu Kogen: 400cm Maiko Snow Resort: 400cm (upper) 310cm (lower) Naeba: 290cm NASPA Ski Garden: 385cm Yuzawa Kogen: 380cm (Kogen) 340cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 260cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Monday 16th February 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 1180cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 51 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 420cm reported on 22 days February 2015 snowfall 201cm reported on 13 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Thursday 19th February 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 1cm Snowfall at base this season 1181cm Posted on Thursday 19th February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Soon after I posted the report yesterday the rain had turned into wet snow, but it was back between the two during the day. A bit wet even when it was snowing really. Not much snow to report down in town, just a sprinkling really, though Maiko does seem to be reporting 5-10cm on the mountain this morning and Kagura reporting 15cm so it sounds like there is some fresh up there to be found. It looks like today is again going to be borderline rain-sleet-snow here in town. Right now there's actually a break in the clouds and even some blue sky - that's not forecast to continue though. Signs that it will get slightly colder tonight and tomorrow so we will perhaps have some decent snowfall to report tomorrow. Temperatures still set to rise over the weekend - Sunday in particular. Let's hope for a return to winter sometime next week. In the meantine, Happy Chinese New Year and have a fine day. --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 460cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 370cm Iwappara: 270cm Joetsu Kokusai: 290cm Kagura: 370cm Kandatsu Kogen: 390cm Maiko Snow Resort: 390cm (upper) 280cm (lower) Naeba: 290cm NASPA Ski Garden: 345cm Yuzawa Kogen: 360cm (Kogen) 320cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 260cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Thursday 19th February 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 1181cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 52 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 420cm reported on 22 days February 2015 snowfall 202cm reported on 14 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 20th February 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 1191cm Posted on Friday 20th February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Something of a wet day yesterday with either rain or wet snow falling for large parts of the day around town areas. I'm happy to report that it is snowing this morning with just a few cm on the car outside so I was quite surprised to see Kagura report 30cm and Maiko lower down by town here also report 20cm. Naeba resort report 10-20cm with up to 40cm in some wind blown places. So sounds like there'll be a decent layer out there. If we can get some more during the day today that would be good. Forecast for the weekend is clearer skies tomorrow, followed by rain on Sunday along with those potentially rather warm conditions. It's the famous Tokamachi Snow Festival this weekend which features lots of large snow sculptures amongst other events. About 45-60 minutes from Yuzawa by car, will depend on the road conditions, and usually worth a look. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 1193cm Posted on Saturday 21st February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Bluebird! It's an absolutely beautiful morning in Yuzawa with clear blue skies and the sun shining down doing it's thing. It's going to be warming up today and tomorrow further still. We can really expect spring-like conditions this weekend. Snow falling during the day yesterday though it didn't amount to much in terms of cm, just logged a few that I had to move off the top of my unmoved car yesterday evening. Rain is still looking on the forecast for tomorrow though on some forecasts it seems to have been pushed back to later in the day, so fingers crossed we might be lucky there. In the meantime though a fantastic weather day to be outside and enjoying the snow. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday turned out to be a mostly grey and cloudy day in the region, with temperatures remaining mild and snow conditions remaining spring. It's a similar kind of start to the day today, perhaps slightly colder and brighter. But mostly clouds up there and that is what is forecast for the day. Looking like it might rain again (down in town and bases anyway) late tomorrow but be snowing as we turn into Friday with colder conditions as well. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 14cm Snowfall at base this season 1207cm Posted on Saturday 28th February 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. 14cm on snow on the top of my car this morning. It's great to see some fresh piling up again. This morning here's what resorts that report are reporting: Kagura - 30cm Naeba - 15cm at base 20-30cm Maiko Snow Resort - 20-30cm So a fairly decent fresh layer for this Saturday morning which will have given the resorts a refresh. A bit more fresh depth would have been welcome (isn't that almost always the case!), but we'll have to make do with what we have been given. Yesterday we ended up having some very windy conditions in places and some lift disruption as well. It's calmer this morning with just a light northerly wind at the moment. Light snow is falling still but the forecast for the day is just cloud so there's more a chance of clearer conditions than further snow I think. It's fairly bright and even some signs of possible sunshine breaking through - looks like the sun is managing to do that over Naeba. Slightly warmer conditions expected tomorrow again with maybe some rain late on in the day that might change to snow again. It doesn't look like we will be treated to any kind of full on winter conditions over the next week or so, maybe just smaller deliveries here and there. • Yuzawa Now: Monday 2nd March 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 10cm Snowfall at base this season 1217cm Posted on Monday 2nd March 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Yesterday the wind was really quite strong at times and I wouldn't be surprised if there was more lift stoppages around the region than just those reported early morning. By late afternoon rain has started falling and it was pretty heavy at times in the evening. Last time I looked last night it was sleet falling and a thin white layer on the ground. I was in Yuzawa just a short while ago but back in Minamiuonuma now where there's just 2cm of snow on the top of the cars that have been parked overnight. There has been more snowfall in Yuzawa, about 10cm in places, and both Kagura and Maiko Snow Resort this morning are reporting 20cm of fresh snow. The snow is pretty wet and heavy here so hopefully lighter as you get up higher on the mountains. Definitely worth checking out though I'd say. There's a bit of blue sky over Minamiuonuma now but lots of cloud still hanging over Yuzawa. The forecast is just for cloudy skies for the day but if here is anything to go by it might end up being a fine day. Moderate winds again this morning, though northerly this time. Tashiro is going to be closed again today and Kagura only open from Mitsumata Ropeway to Kagura Number 1 Romance lift - they might open more if the winds die down. Other than that places seem to be going to open normally. GALA Yuzawa will be open. • Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 3rd March 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 1219cm Posted on Tuesday 3rd March 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Morning from a lovely bright and sunny Yuzawa and Minamiuonuma. Almost clear blue skies early on this morning, just a bit of very thin cloud here and there giving it a lighter blue look. It actually seems to have got a bit hazier looking in the 30 minutes since I started putting this report together. Cloud is actually expected to move in by late morning or early afternoon, but no snow (or rain) forecast. The 2cm I am putting in the report is from yesterday afternoon... no new snow overnight, just a frosting on the car. Kagura are also reporting 5cm of snow since yesterday. It is a chilly start to the day but forecast to warm up to maybe around +7C this afternoon. There doesn't feel like much of a wind down here in town but GALA Yuzawa are saying that they will be closed today due to strong winds forecasts up there. No word of closure from Kagura as I write this... Not really much in terms of snowfall on the forecast at the moment, Thursday looking like the best chance though as the forecast stands right now we probably can't expect anything major. --- It's the 63rd Yuzawa Onsen Yuki Matsuri (Snow Festival) this coming Saturday with the main event from 5pm until 9pm. Lots of festival like events going on ending with fireworks at 8:50pm. Should be fun. There's no shortage of snow this season of course, but would be good we get some fresh snow that the snow sculpting folk can get to work with. --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 450cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 320cm Iwappara: 250cm Joetsu Kokusai: 280cm Kagura: 370cm Kandatsu Kogen: 360cm Maiko Snow Resort: 380cm (upper) 240cm (lower) Naeba: 280cm NASPA Ski Garden: 301cm Yuzawa Kogen: 300cm (Kogen) 250cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 235cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Tuesday 3rd March 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 1219cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 57 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 420cm reported on 22 days February 2015 snowfall 228cm reported on 17 days March 2015 snowfall 12cm reported on 2 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Friday 6th March 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 0cm Snowfall at base this season 1219cm Posted on Friday 6th March 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. I was hoping for something decent to report this morning and I suppose I do, but it's bright blue skies rather than the snowfall we were hoping for. Yes, yesterday we did see snow falling but it really didn't amount to much of anything in terms of new cm and none of the resorts are reporting any fresh. For the moment, early spring continues to be winning out the battle of the seasons. Come on winter, we know you have more left. (Tuesday onwards next week looks quite promising). For now though it's looking like it will be a fine day here with temperatures rising to around +5 in town and sunny conditions likely. It's time for the Yuzawa Snow Festival tomorrow. If you are in Yuzawa and want to check it out, just head for the main onsen road side (station West Exit) and follow the people. Cloudy weather is expected for the day and evening tomorrow. --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 440cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 310cm Iwappara: 245cm Joetsu Kokusai: 280cm Kagura: 370cm Kandatsu Kogen: 355cm Maiko Snow Resort: 360cm (upper) 230cm (lower) Naeba: 280cm NASPA Ski Garden: 310cm Yuzawa Kogen: 300cm (Kogen) 250cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 235cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Friday 6th March 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 1219cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 57 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 420cm reported on 22 days February 2015 snowfall 228cm reported on 17 days March 2015 snowfall 12cm reported on 2 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa. • Yuzawa Now: Tuesday 10th March 2015

Independent snow and weather reporting from the Yuzawa & Minamiuonuma region of Niigata New snowfall at base 2cm Snowfall at base this season 1221cm Posted on Tuesday 10th March 2015 This is an archived report. The latest Yuzawa Now report can be found here. Let's get down to it... Rain overnight here at town level turning into sleet and snow early morning. On the ground there has been perhaps up to a few cm in places - just a dusting on my car - with Maiko Snow Resort reporting 5-10cm (presumably higher up) and Kagura also giving us the number of 20cm of fresh. So some snow up on the mountains and hopefully that will be increasing during the day today. Might well be borderline sleet/rain this morning (again here in town) as temperatures remain in low positive numbers, before settling into proper decent snowfall later on today and tomorrow - which looks like it should be the 'main event'. Looks like Tashiro is closed and Kagura limited to the Mitsumata area only due to already stronger winds up there. Winds expected to get stronger as the day goes on, so expect possible disruptions there. GALA Yuzawa open from early on. I'll leave it at that until tomorrow morning. Fingers crossed! --- Official snow depths: GALA Yuzawa: 430cm Ishiuchi Maruyama: 300cm Iwappara: 230cm Joetsu Kokusai: 280cm Kagura: 370cm Kandatsu Kogen: 335cm Maiko Snow Resort: 330cm (upper) 220cm (lower) Naeba: 280cm NASPA Ski Garden: 294cm Yuzawa Kogen: 290cm (Kogen) 240cm (Nunoba) Yuzawa Nakazato: 215cm Yuzawa Now 2014-2015 season Data as of Tuesday 10th March 2015 Total snowfall at base so far 1221cm Number of days snowfall observed at base 58 days Most snowfall observed in 1 day 100cm (15th December) November 2014 snowfall 0cm December 2014 snowfall 559cm reported on 16 days January 2015 snowfall 420cm reported on 22 days February 2015 snowfall 228cm reported on 17 days March 2015 snowfall 14cm reported on 3 days Previous report Next report All snowfall data presented on this page is the snowfall measured and observed at base/town level by our reporter based in Yuzawa.
