The latest Shiga Kogen Now report can be found here . Morning from Shiga Kogen. A cold and snowy and windy day yesterday across the region with generally poor visibility. Not friendly conditions. But lots of incoming snow. This morning Yakebitaiyama was talking about 40cm of fresh since late afternoon yesterday. Kumanoyu is also reporting 40-50cm. There's some deep snow out there. Exciting for sure, but special care is required in these conditions. I haven't studied big-picture numbers but it just feels like we are getting into 'normal' territory (re: snowfall) for the first time this season. Let's hope it keeps cold and we get normal winter patterns from now. We might get some sun tomorrow morning. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . It was quite a day yesterday; too much snow! A lot of the runs became small, bumpy trails through deep powder (I admire snow sports instructors out there trying to teach!). Others added that it was really scary off the sides of runs, with people getting buried all over the place. No injuries that I’ve heard of yet, but, again, when it’s that deep, going with a partner who can pull you out! It’s weird to write that we only got 35cm today, especially after yesterday. I hardly believed that number over one meter, but I have a pretty good spot to measure snow depth, one that’s not too prone to drifting snow.... It was enough snow to get my Peter (the local name for monster, 20-horsepower-plus snowthrowers) stuck under the roof. Seems like the mounds of snow I was trying to dislodged unfastened a safety switch cable, so it wouldn’t start, and meters of snow were hanging over the roof, ready to come down. Pretty sketchy, but finally figured it out and got Peter to a safer place. It’s a war in the heavy snow, people! Another 19cm to report this Monday morning after snow much of yesterday (and some started up again this morning). It is snowing now, still, and quite a lot in places though over at Annupuri it is rather bright and even a bit of sunshine breaking through the clouds. I enjoy following the other daily reports on SnowJapan. It seems down there in Niigata Prefecture they have had one of their mad snow periods. I'm not sure how I would cope with 120cm of snowfall in 1 day. Not even sure I'd like it, though it sure sounds exciting. That is just mad, though. I would like to experience it one day. Someone asked how can official snow depth go down when there's 30+cm of new snowfall? Hey, ask the ski areas! Official snow depth numbers, to me, are only mildly interesting in the big picture, and not something to dwell on. They often feel like they don't make much sense, best not to overthink. It's interesting (well, a bit) how Niseko Village does seem to keep on updating that not particularly useful snow depth number, whilst still completely ignoring the daily snowfall number (which is 0cm every day). 0cm of fresh every day sounds really rubbish. I'm not going there! Everywhere else - with all the consistent new snow being reported - conditions should be excellent! ;) All lifts are go! However, due to the large amount and weight of snow, in some areas there is still a possibility of fractures at deeper layers. The risk of avalanches remains HIGH on steep slopes under cornices. Areas like Higashi One(East Ridge), the North Face, Kozan no Sawa(Back Bowl) and Osawa. Gates 1, 2, 3, and 4 will be closed. Other gates are undecided. Please wait for the patrol’s decision. Never duck ropes. This is a ski resort. The government does not generally allow off-piste skiing from ski resorts. If accidents continue, more restrictions will result. Niseko respects your freedom to ski off-piste, but at the same time, we ask skiers to be aware of their responsibilities and act accordingly. Avalanches are natural phenomena, accidents only happen when people are involved. There is no safety in this sport. Avoid more than 1 skier on the slope at the same time. Do not remain creek and gully bottoms. Are your beacons on? Beware of sudden changes in the weather. The clouds decided to target us this time, and there's a whole lot of fresh loveliness around. Can't see it, really, as outside is a contrast-free mushy shade of white-grey-silver, but it's definitely there. My measurement of fresh snowfall is 58cm. The ski area has 50cm reported on the official site. There's even more to the north of us. Like I said, very poor visibility at the start of the day. Extra care needed in these conditions (both on and off the slopes). The situation should be much eased off tomorrow, but there is more snow on forecasts on the weekly forecast. Another of those mornings when there's anywhere between 30-60cm of snowfall, depending on where you look. Very early morning Yakebitaiyama was reporting 40cm. There will have been a fair bit more than that since then for sure. I think 50cm is fairly representative at this point in time. Basically, a lot. With the wind blowing it around. Wind is also affecting lifts so for those brave enough to want to be out in this check with ski area for latest. Tomorrow should be calmer and amazing conditions for lucky people here. (The Yokoteyama ski area official snow depth of 80cm is just too funny!) The latest Myoko Now report can be found here . I got excited last night when I watched the national weather news, and, on the weather radar there was one very red dot. Right over Myoko. And that data did not disappoint—we have over a meter of new snow on the ground. My measuring board is basically buried. And it continues to come down. As always, this is a good day to be with friends even on the resort runs; get upside down (especially boarders) and you’ll need some help getting out. It’s basically bottomless, unsettled snow out there. Backcountry will be impossible, at least for the climb, and sluffing is almost certain to happen on steep slopes. But it also could be a lot of fun, if it doesn’t get too deep to move on flatter runs. Myoko is back, baby! And, oh yes, the dog loved riding on the lifts at Kurohime, and even more the un-leashed sections. Sort of an ungroomed run for dogs.... --- Akakura Kanko: 300cm, -8° (up 90cm!) Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 34cm Snowfall at base this season 625cm Greetings Niseko fans. The excellent snow news continues. I have measured 34cm of fresh snow since yesterday. That takes the monthly observed snowfall number up over 4m with nearly a week left to go further. Brilliant. And it is still snowing at a moderate rate. As of 8:30am start the top lift at Annupuri is shown as being on hold due to wind. Others may follow so need to keep an eye on that. Other lifts, for now, appear to be opening as planned. Tomorrow and Tuesday might see the weather ease off somewhat. (I wonder if we might even be treated to a bit of sun). ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 6am: -8℃, 50cm new snow. Moiwa 800m: -10.8℃, data n/a. Annupuri 1100m: -13.1℃, NNE wind speed n/a. Village 1000m: -11.8℃, N9.3m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -12.5℃, N6.3m/s. Hanazono 800m: -10.3℃, N7.5m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape N14m/s, Kamui Cape N13m/s, 1008hPa, 3.5m wave. There are strong northerly winds on the mountains, causing heavy snowfall at the base and making grooming difficult. Following a 6:00 AM meeting between the Hirafu and Annupuri patrols and the Avalanche Research Center, the main gates will be closed due to the complexity of responding to an accident. Please follow the patrols instructions. Heavy snowfall can turn into slabs under its own weight. Avalanches with unclear fracture surfaces are possible even in the forest today. Avalanche conditions remain HIGH even below 1,000m. Do not get into the bottom of valleys and gullies, these are avalanche paths. Do not duck ropes to go out of bounds. One track will lead others to follow, increasing the chances of an accident. Sometimes there are days like this.
