Looking over to our east, the beautiful Mt. Yotei is looking particularly fetching this morning and wearing what looks like a flat-cap (cloud) as I write this. Very fashionable. It is a lovely morning with some nice blue sky (and some cloud). Lots of contrast. It should be a particularly feel-good morning with another modest delivery of snow; again perhaps more to the south/west. Perhaps around 20cm of fresh to enjoy at higher elevations this morning? Annupuri is reporting a winning 25cm; much less at Hanazono, and Hirafu isn't reporting yet. All lifts set to go and gates expected to open. Even the Country Road one! Yey. Lots of people lined up waiting as the first lifts get going. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 6am: -12℃, calm, 20cm snowfall. Moiwa 800m: -13.9℃, W2.4m/s, 20cm new snow, calm. Annupuri 1100m: -16.1℃, WNW6.3m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -15.5℃, N5.2m/s(15m/s @ 3am). Hanazono 800m: -12.1℃, WNW3.6m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape WNW10m/s, Kamui Cape SW15m/s, 1004hPa, 1.8m waves. There is a strong cold air inflow; above 1100m a weak front is passing, winds will temporarily increase to a W10m/s with gusts to 15m/s. There is no significant snowdrifts development and the lower 150cm of recent snowfall has consolidated. Tests indicate low avalanche risk. All gates are expected to be open, please follow the patrol instructions. Snowfall: 20cm on the west side, 10cm on the east side, resetting with light crystalline snow. Avoid simultaneous skiing on steep, open slopes. Stay out of the valley bottoms. Avoid cornices, as they can sometimes trigger avalanches. The wind was strong over the last few days and the snow is unevenly distributed. Ski with caution. There is no 100% safety in this sport. Are your beacons on? It's cold out there this morning, with another layer of snow and - hopefully - there will be less wind today. It certainly doesn't feel as bad. Wind being a factor over the last 24 hours means that the snow has been blown around a lot. On my early morning walk, I observed varying amounts (though I have to go with my trusted spot for consistency), and that is going to be the case on the slopes too. Ski areas themselves are this morning reporting between 5cm and 15cm of fresh snow since yesterday, and the Avalanche Report is reporting 20cm. Generally more on the south/west side perhaps? We should be getting more snow maybe into Monday. As of 8:30am, it looks like lifts will be opening as planned. It is currently snowing moderately at Hirafu and less so over at Annupuri. (Actually, just as lifts are about to open, there was even a bit of sunshine breaking through at Annupuri; I'm guessing that will be temporary). I note all top gates closed today with high avalanche risk. Visibility looks limited on the mountain. Take care out there in these conditions. ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 6am: -12℃, 20cm new snow, snowdrift development. Moiwa 800m: -15.2℃, NW7.7m/s, rapid snowdrift development from winds that peaked midnight @ 30m/s, winds dropping from 4am. Annupuri 1100m: -17.6℃, WNW7.2m/s(30m/s @ midnight). Village 1000m: -16.3℃, WNW3.0m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -17.0℃, N2.0m/s(30m/s @ midnight. Hanazono 800m: -14.5℃, N4.3m/s. Coastal data: Benkei Cape NW15m/s, 22m/s @ midnight, Kamui Cape WSW13m/s, 1012hPa, 3.6m waves. The winds have begun to drop. Above 800m, there is continued snowdrift development from the wind and snow, however the rate of development is slowing. Winds of over 15m/s have caused a HIGH avalanche risk this morning, and snowdrifts are continuing to develop. All top gates will be closed to prevent accidents. Be patient. Once the snow stabilizes, you can ski off-piste again. Do not duck ropes. Never enter restricted areas. The snowfall pattern at Haru no Taki, Yunosawa, and Anbetsu presents a HIGH risk of avalanches with 100cm fractures. Wait for the storm slabs to stabilize. Beacons are not just for decoration; having one can save the lives of your teammates. We strongly recommend having one. Observations show the snow is so good it’s ecstatic. Niseko respects the freedom of skiers, but is concerned about their safety. Respect the Niseko rules. The surrounding mountains also pose similar risks. It's unclear if lifts might be affected this morning and/or what might happen with tree run areas. Not so cold early morning and due to get colder as the day progresses. Independent snow and weather reporting from the Niseko region of Hokkaido New snowfall at base 7cm Snowfall at base this season 725cm I was woken up by the sound of wind in the middle of the night. Very rude, I thought. At the start of the day a lot of lifts are on hold due to the continued pesky winds with only a few lower lifts starting the day. It looks like the gondolas at Hirafu and Hanazono are warming up, though the gondolas at Village and Annpuri are not operating. As gnarly as I am, of course, not for me these conditions. I might actually catch up on the sleep I lost! If you do decide to venture out in this weather, extra care required. More snow is due over the next few days; hopefully with less wind. I have been a bit busy the last few days and just noticed that I haven't yet mentioned the 76th Sapporo Snow Festival, which is now ongoing over in... Sapporo. I am not going this year but it has always been interesting when I have been in the past, especially the large snow sculptures. I believe this year some of the sculptures include ones of characters from Star Wars and the Aizuwakamatsu castle in Fukushima. The festival runs through Wednesday 11th February at three 'sites' (Odori, Tsudome and Susukino). I read that last year 2.3 million people attended the festive. Sounds busier than Niseko! ------------------------------------ Niseko Avalanche Report Moiwa base 6am: -5℃, strong wind, 15cm snowfall, snowdrift development. Moiwa 800m: -8.7℃, WNE14.8m/s, rapid snowdrift development. Annupuri 1100m: -10.7℃, W15.8m/s. Village 1000m: -9.5℃, WSW11.1m/s. Hirafu Hanazono 1000m: -8.8℃, N7.5m/s. Coastal data: Kamui Cape SW26m/s, 999hPa, 2.2m waves. Westerly winds strengthened at 3:00 AM, bringing a fierce snowstorm to the mountains. Snowdrifts are rapidly developing. The avalanche risk on leeward slopes is increasing at all elevations. Ocean wave heights are expected to exceed 4m. It is recommended to cancel today’s tour. It is also recommended to stay off the slopes today. If new snowdrifts exceed 100cm in thickness, the increased weight of the snow plates (snowdrifts and wind snow slabs)will make them susceptible to weak line fractures due to structural weaknesses. Currently, research and experiments are being conducted by the National Research Institute for Earth Science and Disaster Prevention at Moiwa Ski Resort @ 800m. We are grateful to Moiwa Ski Resort for their cooperation, and we respect the efforts of the researchers in such a harsh environment. Main gates will be closed to prevent accidents. Do not sneak past patrol and duck ropes to ski off the course. It might be a good idea to go to a hot spring today.
