Independent snow and weather reporting from the Myoko region of Niigata

New snowfall at base 24cm
Snowfall at base this season 964cm

Posted on Sunday 8th February 2026 This is an archived report. The latest Myoko Now report can be found here.

Snow seems to be falling all over Japan today, and it really started to pick up here in Myoko from about 7 this morning. Coming down hard now, maybe at three or four centimeters an hour. Good day for noontime snowthrowing. And it’s cold as well, so it’s nice out there.

The trains are not running into Myokokogen Station today, if you happen to be on the road in. It was really coming down in Joetsu City, just to the north of us on the seacoast. They get some crazy winds coming off the ocean with winter storms, too, so I know they try to be careful about operating the trains. Many of the rural roads out on the plain there have wind fencing that rotates into position to block those Japan Sea gusts. Keep an eye out over the next day or so, as the winds here are predicted to get stronger in the afternoon and into tomorrow. Some lifts may close, particularly the top lifts and gondolas, due to the wind.

As always, with this much new, loose, uncompacted snow, go out there with a friend (especially the boarders). Go in headfirst and you’ll need a buddy to pull you out. Better to do that, be embarrassed and have a laugh, rather than the more unpleasant alternative (which does happen, and too often). But let’s be positive—look at all that powder snow coming down! Think of the fun! This is a day for the serious skier! Let the riffraff ski on sunny days; we ski in the snow in the blizzard!
